This thread is dedicated to marine parts that can be substituted with auto parts. Please only enter parts that have the same manufactures code, part numbers, build specs or related safety ratings. Brand changes are accepted as long as they new brand is equivalent or better than the original.

Please add any comments that will help identify part cross over’s.

(Let the reader beware that these recommended parts are only offered as comparatives. Any onus of liability lies on the person or persons that replace the parts. This is an entertainment thread only.)

Fram filters will definitely not fit some Westerbeke applications, even though their cross over says they will. The thread diameter might fit, but the filter is too long to fit along the side of the block. Unfortunately, the only way to figure it out is to buy a filter and try it.......and then try to return it when it won't fit.

I have had better luck with Wix filters, not only with the fit but with the check valves working properly for inverted or remote applications.

My own preference is to use OEM filters, but sometimes Westerbeke's are hard to get locally, so I use Wix.

What Frank said. Just as I don't use the cheapest engine oil on sale at wally world, I don't use Fram oil filters.

You can cross-reference any oil filter to a WIX number right here on the WIX website. Put in a Westerbeke 36918 and out pops WIX 51334. If you click the filter number, you'll see the specifications that they use to cross-reference. It's more than just "does it fit?"

Rod suggested this information I posted in the electrical forum under "wild westerbeke issue" might be useful here.

The following pertains to a 2002 Westerbeke 4.5 BCGB generator:

Hi all, I ended up changing Diodes as well this weekend (but after winterizing).
And the diodes I purchased from Allied Electric were the right ones, in fact same exact part as the ones I removed. Here is the link.
http://www.alliedelec.com/search/pro...px?SKU=5500064
They are $6.32 each from Allied versus $125.00 a pair from westerbeke dealer. Also, if you still have the original Denso plugs and don't want to pay a kings ransome for replacements. I have found that NGK BPR5ES-11 plugs are replacements as well (all of 6.03 from Amazon). I can only imagine what westerbeke dealers want for them.

My Westerbeke originally had NGK plugs. Denso is Toyota's parts company. They're readily available, too.

I recently changed my spark plugs.

Marine Dealer = $20.00 a piece

Chevy Dealer = $10.00 a piece

Autozone = $6.50 a piece

I talked the Chevy dealer down to $6.83 a piece only because Autozone didn't have all of them and I was going to have to run to three different stores.

In the end, it's the same dam plug the Marine dealer had.

I think the intent of this thread is/was to share specifics i.e. Searay says I need this part XYZ#, but I got ABC# at wally world as a direct replacement. I like that we're saving money and not devaluing our boats or making them less safe, but telling me you saved 3$ on a part that I could save the same 3$ on without specifics doesn't help.

Am I right?

what a bought cap and rotor and wires im new to the seen

im asking if u can get a cap and rotor at auto zone

Probably best to stick with Marine rated for anything that is expected to contain or distribute spark.

I just got a Merc Cap and Rotor kit for $57 each online. I don't know what the "Auto Zone version" costs but I did not think that was too bad.

As KK said. For 8.1s, the spark plugs are AC 41-983's (Mercruiser P/N# 33-863622001). Gap .060". This is straight out of the Mercruiser Manual. The Mercruiser P/N is an AC part...

$6 or $20 each - your choice...

Cool, there are definitely places where money can be saved but I would personally recommend against trying to substitute anything in the fuel delivery or ignition system (with obvious exception of the spark plugs) with auto parts. There has also been discussion against substututing other electronic parts such as IAC and other sensors on newer engines due to lack of being sealed units.

Just safe practice in my opinion.
