Official liberal thread:

Sorry about that: I am a bit confused on what is permanent and what is temporary. I was a bit curious on the overall numbers. . all I found in the quick searches were 10 yr numbers.

From a fiscal conservative point of view, when you are in a budget deficit, you need to balance revenue cuts with spending cuts. Not balance revenue cuts with other revenue cuts.

Well. . it is a 2% savings for people who are mostly spending money paycheck to paycheck. That is direct economic spending -> which is what they are trying to achieve. If a business begins hiring new employees because of a temporary 2% wage tax break -> let me know, cause I want to invest in their competitors.

But your broader point is legitimate. There is NOTHING in this package which reduces unemployment in the U.S. (Probably stimulates growth in China, however).
Yes, it might stimulate sales of large screen televisions (just in time for the Super Bowl!)

It will be interesting to see if this "deal" actually makes it into law.

On one level, the Democrats are furious -> but they have no spine.

On another level, the Republicans are furious (over the few minor things they conceded), and they just might decide to hold out for a bit more.

Personally, I for one am really happy about the reduction in the payroll tax. I like money in my pocket :)

At a national level; I stand by what I said before=> balancing tax cuts with tax cuts does not bode well for the future. We are going to be exactly in this same place two years from now; AND have alot more debt to boot.

One option is to quit spending, but it seems that won't happen until we are dire straits.

For 75% or so of wage earners, total payroll taxes exceed total income taxes which was a shock to me when I read it. So to give his loyal "no" or "low" tax paying minions a break, Obama has to lower payroll taxes.

I think I am correct on this, but not raising the top bracket does not give us folks that much of a break since we pay a good portion of it back with the AMT. The dems were the ones who put the AMT in during the Johnson years to penalize a 100 or so millionaires who paid no income taxes would no longer pay no tax.:smt009

A little perspective......

On the origin of CONSERVATIVES vs. LIBERALS. Here is a condensed version...

Humans originally existed as members of small bands of nomadic hunters/gatherers. They lived on deer in the mountains during the summer and would go to the coast and live on fish and lobster in the winter.

The two most important events in all of history were the invention of beer and the invention of the wheel. The wheel was invented to get man to the beer. These were the foundation of modern civilization and together were the catalyst for the splitting of humanity into two distinct subgroups:

1. Liberals; and
2. Conservatives.

Once beer was discovered, it required grain and that was the beginning of agriculture. Neither the glass bottle nor aluminum can were invented yet, so while our early humans were sitting around waiting for them to be invented, they just stayed close to the brewery.

That's how villages were formed.

Some men spent their days tracking and killing animals to B-B-Q at night while they were drinking beer. This was the beginning of what is known as the Conservative movement.

Other men who were weaker and less skilled at hunting learned to live off the conservatives by showing up for the nightly B-B-Q's and doing the sewing, fetching, and hair dressing. This was the beginning of the Liberal movement.

Some of these liberal men eventually evolved into women. The rest became known as girlie-men. Some noteworthy liberal achievements include the domestication of cats, the invention of group therapy, group hugs, and the concept of Democratic voting to decide how to divide the meat and beer that conservatives provided.

Over the years Conservatives came to be symbolized by the largest, most powerful land animal on earth; the elephant. Liberals are symbolized by the jackass.

Modern liberals like imported beer (with lime added), but most prefer white wine or imported bottled water. They eat raw fish but like their beef well done. Sushi, tofu, and French food are standard liberal fare.

Another interesting evolutionary side note: most of their women have higher testosterone levels than their men. Most social workers, personal injury attorneys, journalists, dreamers in Hollywood and group therapists are liberals. Liberals invented the designated-hitter rule because it wasn't fair to make the pitcher also bat.

Conservatives drink domestic beer. They eat red meat and still provide for their women. Conservatives are big-game hunters, rodeo cowboys, lumberjacks, construction workers, firemen, civil engineers, medical doctors, police officers, corporate executives, athletes, Marines, and generally anyone who works productively.

Conservatives who own companies hire other conservatives who want to work for a living. Liberals produce little or nothing. They like to govern the producers and decide what to do with the production. Liberals believe Europeans are more enlightened than Americans. That is why most of the liberals remained in Europe when conservatives were coming to America . They crept in after the Wild West was tamed and created a business of trying to get more for nothing.

Here ends today's lesson in world history: It should be noted that a Liberal may have a momentary urge to angrily respond to the above before forwarding it. A Conservative will simply laugh and be so convinced of the absolute truth of this history that it will be forwarded immediately to other true believers and to more liberals just to tick them off.

That is an interesting view on the AMT and the wage tax.

Isn't the wage tax reduction a tax cut for EVERYONE? Even the self employed pay the wage tax? And it's not a fixed amount like a stupid credit. The more you earn. . the bigger the cut (to the $107k cap). And unlike the stupid credits. . if you don't work. . you don't benefit.

Frankly. . it is the best news I had all day.

Regarding the AMT: The AMT middle class "fix" would be extended. So. . good news there.

I would think the AMT would be popular with conservatives. It is the closest thing we have to a flat tax  (Ok. . I admit that I am just tweaking you here)

But nice swipe at Democrats. This was passed in the 1960's and is waaaaaay obsolete as written - we agree on this. Too bad the Republicans couldn't find time to fix it during the DECADE they held the House. (Ok. . I admit it. . I am tweaking you again)

But the bottom line is that this deal REALLY exposes the priorities of the Republican leadership. The importance of deficit reduction is nowhere to be found in this deal.

There is minor evidence that the Democrats may grow a spine to oppose this deal. Things will be real interesting if they do. Then they could claim to be fiscal conservatives. . (hahahahaha)

Quote of the Day: NY Rep. Anthony Weiner

Liberal New York Rep. Anthony Weiner in response to FoxNews' Megyn Kelly's question about why people who pay taxes their entire life must pay an enormous estate tax once they die:
"You won't be paying anything because you will be dead."

To All Employees
I'm happy to inform you that the company Christmas Party will be held on December 23rd at Luigi's Open Pit Barbecue. There will be lots of spiked eggnog and a small band will play traditional carols...feel free to sing-along !
And don't be surprised if our CEO shows up dressed as Santa Claus to light the Christmas tree.

Exchanging gifts among employees can be done at this time. Please remember to keep gifts to the agreed $10 limit.

Merry Christmas to you and yours,
Patty Lewis, Human Resources Director

In no way was yesterday's memo intended to exclude our Jewish employees.
We recognize that Hannakkuh is an important holiday and often coincides with Christmas (although not this year). However, from now on we're calling this party our Holiday Party. The same policy also applies to employees who are celebrating Kwanzaa at this time. There will be no tree or Christmas carols sung.

Happy holidays to you and to yours.

Regarding the anonymous note I received from a member of Alcoholics Anonymous requesting a non-drinking table, I'm happy to accommodate your request but please remember that if I put a sign on the table that reads "AA Only" you won't be anonymous any more.

In addition, we'll no longer be having a gift exchange because union members feel that $10 is too much money.

I have arranged for members of Overeaters Anonymous to sit farthest away from the dessert table and for pregnant members to sit closest to the restrooms. Gays are allowed to sit with each other. Lesbians do not have to sit with gays; each group will have its own table. And, yes, there will be a flower arrangement for the gay men's table.

Happy now?

People! People! Nothing sinister was intended by wanting our CEO to play Santa Claus. Even if the anagram for "Santa" does happen to be "Satan."
There is no evil connation to our own little "man in a red suit."

Vegetarians! I've had it with you people. We're holding this party at Luigi's Open Pit Barbecue whether you like it or not! You can just sit at the table farthest from the "Grill of Death" as you call it, and you'll get salad bar only including hydroponic tomatoes. Tomatoes have feelings too, you know. They scream when you slice them. I can hear them now. I hope you have a rotten holiday.

Drive drunk and die, you hear me?

I'm sure I speak for all of us in wishing Patty Lewis a speedy recovery from her stress-related illness. I'll continue to forward your cards to her at the sanitarium.

In the meantime management has decided to cancel the Holiday Party and give everyone the afternoon of the 23rd off with full pay.

Weiner is a dick.

Agreed, Weiner is all of what's wrong with DC, old-school politics, not enough behind the scenes wheeling/dealing didn't happen, and he's upset about it.
