Official Caterpillar3116/3126 Thread

cat might still give you something, the cartridge is what is worth the most to them so I wouldn’t completely write it off as a non core, unless it’s totally hosed?

Otherwise I would see if you can get the manufacturer model number. They were made by Borg Warner I believe so if you have a local diesel or turbo shop that’s a good place to start to source them.

I think @knotonduty swapped his by sourcing them elsewhere maybe he can comment as well

yes I just crossed the cat turbo number to borg Warner which is who makes cat turbos, bought them here brand new for
1250 a piece. 3200 a turbo is insane.

Thank you John, that's great to know! Do you have the borg part number, would it be the sane for a 3126? Good to know they also have water and oil pumps for the 3100 series.

They are different turbos between the 3126 and 3116. Let me look it up.

When I was looking into it I talked to a couple turbo dealers who said cat still had a lock on the 3126 turbo distribution and Borg Warner or any turbo dealer could get in some hot water for selling them outside of the dealer network. That doesn’t mean you won’t find one but it wasn’t as easy as the 3116. You have to make sure you get the marine version that also has the correct compressor housing outlet angle

Why not send them out for refirb? Especially in Florida there are many rebuilders. My mechanic sent my 3116 turbos somewhere in Ft Lauderdale, they came back virtually new. I'd have to find the invoicing but they were around $600 each for rebuild; that was ten years ago however.

Amazon has Ez oil valve with 90deg elbow. Get some 5/8” ID hose and some brass garden hose fittings.

Pump is a cheap pump off eBay.

I plumbed a simple, electric fuel pump with an old fashioned in line gasoline type filter upstream for the purpose of washing accumulated asphaltines & priming the Raycor 900's on my Trojan.

Planning on doing the same here for the CATS & the genny.

Makes good sense for a boat you are going to keep for a long time.

A quick search found this

https://www.mddistributorsstore.com/borg-warner-turbo-systems/14809880001/new-turbocharger

best way is to go to CAT online parts put in your engine serial number so you can find your cat turbo number then use google to cross it to borg Warner, then google the borg Warner number to find the best deal.
Thank you for looking but I remember mine as looking very different, maybe those are used on bus or truck engines? Appreciate all your help.

The description says it's for marine applications.

177-5206 was our CAT part for a 350HP, SN starting in 1ZJ, 3126 with 177-5206R being for the reman. A quick search turns up the following as a cross ref but again, please verify with your own SNs, you don’t want the wrong turbo on there

Looking at raw water pumps and impellers.

Condition of mine is unknown.

Depco has the Sherwood P1732C at $767.10 each.

And I thought YANMAR parts were rich !

At $1,534, perhaps I should hold off a bit and just get the impeller kits for now $63 at Depco.

Replace the 2 on the boat and keep 2 as spares for now.

450 hours on the CATS, likely little or no shallow water use.

Makes sense?

makes sense to me. One of mine was leaking water through the shaft seal so I replaced it. You might want to replace the cover plates though, they tend to groove

Can the cover plates be flipped over ?
