Official Caterpillar3116/3126 Thread

190 at the dock almost sounds like a clogged intake or collapsing intake hose restricting flow. As others have said, start at the hull intake and work your way through. Hope it's something simple for you.

We pulled them completely, totally clean. The only thing I can think of is an obstruction along the line somewhere else. I have pulled the strainer already as well. I get no bubbles on the starboard side from the underwater exhaust.

On my boat, I had several tubes blocked where a impeller vane was pushed far into the tube. They had to be rodded out. Did you pull them off and see daylight through all the tubes?

The other option is check the thermostat. It may not be opening/stuck closed.

CAT recommended a higher temp thermostat (185 or maybe 190 deg) and I installed them. I’m going back to the lower temp ones when I have to open the cooling system again. My engines do idle at that temp if I warm them up long enough, or idle out into the channel.

New to me 1996 450 DA with 450 hours.

Not my first diesel, ran a fleet of MACK TRUCKS in the mid 1980's .....just getting to know my way around this CAT.

Going to flush fresh water side & replace coolant.

Remove and service all coolers, replace all hoses, impellers & thermostats.

Sea water aftercooler is on the side, heat exchanger is on the front.

Does anyone know where the trans cooler is located?

Does the 3126 have a fuel cooler? (since no Bosch style pump, I'm guessing not)

Also, any experience or suggestions on where to source a replacement turbocharger? Mine is likely not rebuildable as the freeze plug had to be epoxied in due to corrosion issues.

BEST !

The trans cooler is located right above the trans just under the electrical J-Box.
There is a fuel cooler; it is located on the intake side of the raw water pump.
I've got some pics somewhere for the 3116 which I think is the same.

BTW - one of the first things you want to do is rotate that fuel hose 90 deg fitting around so the hose is on the other side of the oil pressure sender. This will make changing the raw water impeller so much easier; and you will change them quite often. You may need to slide the cooler towards the back of the engine about 1/4" so the hose will clear the sender. It's all very easy to do.

genius. I’ll do that this spring when I swap impellers

i replaced both turbos with cat remans last year. Cost me about $3,200 each after the core refund. Others have gone outside of the cat dealer and got them much cheaper. CAT doesn’t make turbos so aside from having to paint them with the fancy white spray paint you can probably go that route if you want to save a couple bucks

New to CAT 3126 but not new to diesel.

The first big task will be the removal of all coolers

Fasteners: metric or standard?

Going to set up the engine room with it's own set of larger hand tools and keep these items down there to reduce the climbing up and down.

Several years ago I moved up to all Milwaukee electric hand tools, including 1/4" & 1/2" impact.

I've got a couple of those awl type, angled hose removal tools.

Thought i'd pick up a set of 1/2" drive impact sockets, std and deep.

What else would y'all recommend ?

Anything special needed to remove aftercooler, heat exchanger, oil, trans & fuel coolers?

Anything else I should keep down there ?

metric fasteners. Ratchet wrenches are a must. Specially on getting the 3116 turbos off.

how about that one top left manifold nut on the turbine to exhaust flange? I ground down a wrench to fit, I can’t believe how tight they made that clearance

Yes that one was def a PITA. I think I was able to get the ratchet wrench on from the bottom and get it off.
Ohh finally ran the boat with a clean hull made 2800 each 30 mph. Was pretty happy.

O.K.

So in addition to my regular on-board toolbox I'm gonna keep these in the engine room:
  • all filter changing tools & raycor catch pans
  • metric 6 point sockets (impact) 1 set standard, 1 set deep
  • flex head combination open end/box ratchet style wrenches
  • all the usual suspects in larger sizes
  • waterproof tool box
also
  • missing the stainless pins that fasten down the battery box lids. Dunno what they are called or what they look like
  • need to replace stbd turbo - and will likely not have a good core-suggestions on where to source this ?

MANY THANKS !

cat might still give you something, the cartridge is what is worth the most to them so I wouldn’t completely write it off as a non core, unless it’s totally hosed?

Otherwise I would see if you can get the manufacturer model number. They were made by Borg Warner I believe so if you have a local diesel or turbo shop that’s a good place to start to source them.

I think @knotonduty swapped his by sourcing them elsewhere maybe he can comment as well
