Official Caterpillar3116/3126 Thread

My mechanic back in late October pulled both of my 3126a aftercoolers (part # 278-6038) to have them pressure checked and tested. Turned out one was bad and he suggested that we order two new ones. Caterpillar said they were back ordered 90 days. I called the dealer in early February and they clarified it was actually 92 business days, not calendar days. o_O So we just hit the magic 92 day mark and still no coolers.:( My mechanic does not recommend rebuilding the old ones. Does anyone here have a possible lead on a set or even one that might be sitting on a shelf somewhere? I tried changing the Cat store location to a different state like Florida, but it will not show me availability outside of California for some reason.

milford MA also shows two in stock when I check my local Milton. What do you see when you add it to your cart in SIS? Mine automatically checks all other Milton CAT’s

either way I bet you could call that Milton store and get them shipped. Shows about $4k each

I have a close family friend who lives in Watertown MA, which is about 35 minutes away from Milford. I called the Milford Cat dealer and they actually have 16 aftercoolers in stock! The Cat dealer will not ship them to me out of state, but my friend can pick them up and ship them for me. Thank you and The Bill Collector for your help! :)

nice!!

Picked up the two engines today and took them to the boat yard. Still working on the engine bay refit, planning on installing the engines in late May.
The port CAT remanufactured engine only had 100 hours on it, before T&S went over it and rebuilt the transmission.
The starboard engine was rebuilt along with the transmission.

my wallet hurts on your behalf, but how cool is it going to be to have two basically new engines in a spotless bilge!

Thankfully, the engine and generator work were priced into the purchase price.

One question for the group is, should I replace the starboard tach/hour meter?
The hour meters read 107 (port remanufactured engine) & 103 (starboard).
My guess is both gauges were replaced when the remanufactured engine was installed at MarineMax. The MarineMax maintenance logs support this.
With the full starboard engine rebuild, I'm guessing I should just note the rebuild was done at 103 hours indicated and not bother changing the hour meter.

I wouldn’t change it for the purpose of the rebuild but if you don’t have the aetnas or some other digital tach now would be the time since the engines are new.

good records and receipts with the hours logged is all I would worry about if I was buying a boat with work done like yours.

Regarding replacing the hour meters, I would not worry about that, like otherss said good documentation will show when the work was done. Both engines were replaced on a boat I bought many years ago, I just kept the invoices to document hours.

My reply is assuming you'd want to replace them because you had the engines rebuilt.

The older model gauges didn't have the flashing hourglass meter. Any chance someone replaced the tach at some point?
I'm certain that both were replaced at some point. The Port engine (hourglass) was replaced with a CAT remanufactured engine by MarineMax for the original owner. The Starboard engine was the original that I just had rebuilt. It had just over 1000 hours on it, going by service records. Marine Max must have replaced both gauges when the CAT remanufactured engine was installed.

Just curious as to why you had the starboard engine rebuilt at 1,000 hours?

I run at 15-17psi and 700* at 2100-2300

Also boost here is "In/Hg Gauge". The conversion to psi is roughly divide by 2. At 2400 RPM I usually see 780-800 *F and 19-20 Psi Boost. Best I can tell I'm right in spec.
