Official Caterpillar3116/3126 Thread

Had a FaceTime call with him this morning, regarding the swim platform rebuild. Going to post info on the SeaRay 380 thread.
Saw that post. Following.

Last year, I found my swim platform bolts had been installed threads (as opposed to bolt shoulder) on the outside. They were failing and easily knock off the nut with my hand. Nothing as bad as yours. I did use Total Boat Epoxy Bilge to recoat the bottom of the platform after watching Andy use a bunch of their product.

Hello everyone, I need your help and opinion guys. I have 3126 and it has AirSep after some time of work I have a small oil leak between the air inlet and the turbine. I've removed and cleaned the whole AirSep system, doesn't help.

And also i cleaned and checked the oil return valve.

There is only a fitting, some hose and a check valve in the drain. Maybe a cracked housing, loose fitting, bad hose. Also the orientation of the housing and the position of the oil return check valve are pretty specific Check out --> https://www.walkerairsep.com/techInfo.asp

Post some pictures of the above areas.

Get your serial numbers off the engine tags, and go the the official CAT parts online store, you can find every component on those engines and be 100% sure it fits YOUR engines. For CAT, most consumables are cheap and easy to get shipped or you can pick them up locally.

For the most part, belts and filters are pretty generic, but you never know, and its a waste of a day to head to the boat and have the wrong part.

Dave, I am registered with parts.cat... they show several different belts eligible for my serial numbers. Just trying to make sure what is what and get the correct belts.

5 out of the 6 say they fit my starboard engine. Same for the port engine. I purchased the water pump belts.

6F-1992 (replaced by 1S-1193 set of 2)
9Y-1131
9M-1091
8L-8984 (SET OF 2)
036-6775 (I already purchased 2 of these.)

It can be a little confusing, you need to know a little about how your engine is configured (or at least it helps). More than likely you have a single belt 51 A alternator, so the 2 in black will likely be it.

9Y-1131 (shows as not a match)

I have 3126's, but I have the Alternator belt as 1S-1193 and the Water pump as 036-6775. Have a set on my desk as we speak if that helps.

Speaking of belts, anybody have a good lead on a belt tension tester?

CAT test proceedure is 25lb load and about 1/2” max deflection.

I can find 10# load, but not 25#. I’m sure CAT has one for $$$$.

There are some other styles, I’m not familiar with how to use them…more to learn.

Got the call from T&S Marine in Crisfield, the 3116 engines are ready. The port CAT remanufactured engine needed some general maintenance, such as replacing the alternator, belts, hoses, etc., also serviced the transmission.
The starboard engine had scoring in the cylinder walls and the crankshaft had to be replaced. So a rebuild. Also rebuilt the transmission. They test ran both engines, to ensure I wasn't going to find anything after the engines were installed. Replaced a fuel controller, some hard lines and cooling components. Haven't gotten the complete list as I have yet to pick up the engines.
Bottom line is I'm very happy with the service and the owners keeping me in the loop with phone calls, every step of the way. They came in under what I expected to pay, which is surprising given the what seemed like never ending items that needed to be replaced.
Still have a lot to do in the engine bay, so they won't get installed until probably May.
