Official 60 SR600 resto w/pics

well...got her about 80% sanded now and all the fittings went to the chrome shop....ouch
been awhile since I had any potmetal rechromed and it didn't get any cheaper.
2 emblems, steering wheel center and base, 5 cleats, 2 handles, bow light, flagpole, 2 rope guides, 3 tiedown eyes, and stern light base will be in the 500.00 area when done.
this was a bit of a budget buster but will really make it come together in the end.
this means I will be modifying the windshield I have to work ...and IMO it will be REALLY cool looking with the addition I am making to it

VeMopar where did you find a chrome shop? I don't think 500 is a bad deal... that's a lot of parts and a lot of prep work. I've need some parts done on my pontiac for years but everywhere I've contacted said they don't do small orders. I'm sure the Ray will be show quality can't wait my friend...

Metal Finishing Company here in Indy
the guy that owns it looks like he crawled out from under a Harley and it is in one of the worst neighborhoods in town, but he is a plating artist.
and from experience potmetal IS an art to get it right.

Back to work again...
the windshield being to wide gave me a mental setback for awhile and knowing a correct Taylor Made was a total budget blaster
the old Glasstron windshield was going to have to work. So after some planning and study ....the modification began
BTW the Rockwell Sonicrafter is the ultimate rockin tool for clean cuts on aluminum and plexiglass.

had to take out almost 4" from the center due to the curvature of the corveette style windshield.

and after some fussing with a slight inaccuracy it turned out pretty well I think
get a buddy to heliarc and fill the top and bottom cuts on the aluminum frame and it will be tough to tell it doesn't belong on the boat
003-6.jpg

004-6.jpg

and a strip filler to cover the cut in the glass will add a kinda cool aircraft look to it I think
plus cover the seam and add some lost rigidity to the glass

Looks great so far... are you going to put a tim piece on the inside of the windshield as well ? Kinda sandwich the two together? Love what you've done so far keep up the great work...

yup..will sandwich it with a rubber strip to add rigidity and drill it and use some round head srews to secure and add to the aircraft style look.
and thanks for the encouragement

and also bought a cool little pice on ebay for 5 bucks

total investment 618.00 now

Gonna be damned sexy when you're done with it. :)

Had to register to subscribe to your thread. Really great scores on many of the hardware & windshield items you've acquired. I have a thread on FiberGlassics & I-Boats w/ same user name/id. But not even close to where you are with this! Great looking hull too! Looking forward to seeing your progress through the winter! t

Thanks & great work!

I stand corrected, you sexy bastard:smt101, but 'pie in the sky' thinking makes me wonder how much MORE sexy it would be with a stealthy jet-drive.
I totally understand the budget constraints, and lotsa people prefer the 'per factory specs', but if this was a total basket case w/o an engine I would'a converted it to an I/O or Berkley with thru-hull exhaust. (and atomic batteries, smoke-screen, bat-mines.....you get the idea)

I was looking at a jet drive conversion lower unit for the old Evinrude on Ebay...tempting but not enough to take the chance on an oddball 50 year old part

THIS WAS IT

The holidays have slowed the progress
(and the Admiral wants her kitchen finished)
but a score on Ebay and slow business at work made a gas tank happen
30.00 Ebay

Moparlvr,
That is one COOL looking boat!! First thing I thought of was Batman, then an old Cadillac. You are doing an awesome job so far and definitely are doing your homework finding the parts. I look forward to following the rest of your project. Just as an aside, you could throw in a few pics of the kitchen reno while you put this one on hold!

I'll pass on posting the galley pics....that denotes actual work :wow:
the boat isn't work to me

Are we related??? My admiral wants her kitchen done too, but she's more of a nut-job boater than I am. So, she KNOWS (and agrees): No kitchen work between April 1 - Nov 30 as it's boating season. If I so much as pick up a tool to work on that kitchen between those dates, my goose is cooked!

After 12/30, only work on it weeknights, because then there's the obligatory bar night at the yacht club every Friday & Saturday. Then some sort of holiday party, installation dinner, charity event, meeting, etc. at the club as well.

So, she gets about 3 nites of work outta me every week. Goin on 4 boating seasons now, but yeah, that kitchen will get done someday...

Got the windshield sectioning done this weekend...pics soon
looks like I am about ready to split the hull soon to do the rub rail repairs
working on figuring out how to salvage the rubber and aluminum channel
gotta coax the 50 year old rubber into flexing a little so I can slide it out to get to the rivets.

Try spraying the daylights outta it with WD40. Did that with mine, and it worked better than I thought. I used a hammer and a 1" Oak dowel to lightly pound (tap?) the rubber insert out thru the aluminum channel. The dowel laid in the channel nicely and I just drove it out.

Other than that, is there a way to reach up underneath and grind the rivits off from the back, without having to pop the top off? Went thru that circus-act as well on the ol' Starcraft. It had those big old nasty 1/4" rivits (not the kind you'd put on with a pop-riviter) and they were an s.o.b. to get out... I feel for ya now...
