Official 330 Sundancer Thread

Looking for some feedback on replacing house batteries with AGM's (DEEP CYCLE 12 VDC AGM (ABSORBED GLASS MAT - SEALED LEAD ACID)
There is a lot of discussion on the site regarding installing these batteries with the original onboard charger / alternator... but I cannot find a definitive yes or no with my charger system.

My 96 330 has the Pro Mariner EX 25 charger and I need to know if anyone here has installed these batteries and if there are any charging issues with the onboard charger / alternator / shore power?
Your feedback appreciated.

One thing you don't want to do is mix battery types (AGM and wet cell for example). Charger should be OK but I believe that is the original unit. You may want to upgrade to a smart charger.

Thanks .. I had assumed that as the charger is 3 bank that I can replace the two housebatteries/ port engine start battery with the AGM's but leave the starboard starter and and gen battery with their own wet cell battery or is it a case of replacing all 4 batteries with the AGM's .. will look into the smart chargers as well thanks.

Further to my question regarding using AGM batteries to replace house batteries, the total cost to install smart reg's on alternators and charger plus replacing 4 batteries means I will put this option on hold for a while!!

But I still need to replace the two house battery/ port starter - My problem started as these batteries were replaced just before I purchased boat with 2 650 CCA cranking batteries ( not deep cycle ) at time of purchase I had no idea these were not correct and they have caused problems since then, but cannot find any indication of what rating these should be?

Can anyone with the same battery configuration ie 2 batteries on port engine / house - 1 battery starboard engine - 1 battery genset advise the correct battery rating /size to handle starting port engine plus running all house including winch- I have been looking at Deep cycle either 105 or 130 ah / 800CCA as an option but unsure if these are best option ... would prefer much higher ah rating but have limited room in engine bay to fit wider/longer batteries

So your advice will be appreciated!

I have 650 CCA group 34 batteries dual cycle agm on my boat. Replaced them all last year. So far the old charger has been holding them at 12.98 volts. Now I don't think that is full charge on agm batteries. So this year I will change over to a smart charger.

650 CCA I have no issues starting motors or generator.

Original batteries were group 27 so a dual cycle group 27 is the largest you will get in your existing battery trays I suspect. If you go larger to a group 31 then you will need all new battery trays. Not expensive, but another thing to change.

Good luck!!

Thanks for the fast feedback... will use the CCA650 as a min start point... I was told I could put in the AGM's to replace the wet cell but warned that if not charging at 14.6 they will degrade at a much faster rate ( hence cost to upgrade alternator and charger with smart regulators).... so worth changing over to that smart charger as soon as possible!

I just put a 2012 330 under contract and will be closing on it within the next week or so. It will be my first Sea Ray, and my wife and I are looking forward to many years of enjoyment. I have one question about the boat however. Am I correct that the only way to get to the bow to throw a dock line would be by going through the windshield hatch and isinglass? There does not appear to be any way to get to the side deck from the stern, am I right?

Yes, the 2012 330 is only 33' and does not have gunnels to walk on. The 2009 330 was nearly 36' long with a wider beam and walk around gunnels. In 2010 on, they"cheated" customers. You have to buy the 2012 360 to get the same boat as the 2009 330

We just got a 1994 330 Sundancer. I'm trying to figure out how you can monitor the state of charge of the house battery for when we are not using the generator but are using the house lights, fridge, etc.

Thanks - Greg

Well when you find out let me know, I just delivery of a 95 330 and I was wondering the same thing.

Few things to discuss/ask.....we got a new to use 1995 330 Sundancer with carbed 454 V-drives and genny.
1) My dock neighbor has a 2001 340. I have to say I prefer the layout of both the cabin and especially the cockpit. I like having the forward portside seat and i like the captain's bench so I can stretch my legs and my little son or wife can sit right next to me. I don't ever see myself wanting to upgrade to the newer 340's because of this.

2) I am going to wash and wax my boat this Friday and I am wondering what are some tips for doing a boat like this (I have done my old BR), do I wax the non-skid surface on the top deck? It doesn't seem very coarse as my other non-skid surfaces on my other boat. THANKS!

The best product IMO for the non-skid is Starbrite Non-Skid deck cleaner. Use as per the label. If you want a bit of shine after, Woody's Wax works well for non-skid. Do NOT use regular wax on the non-skid. Someone will fall and hurt themselves. Even Woody's is a bit slippery after application.

Congrats on the 330. I agree that the cockpit layout on our years 330 is nicer than the 2000 to 2002 340's, for the same reasons as you say. Except for the extra arch height on the 340.

The 340 has a shorter, but centered forward berth. I like the angle for a bit more length, but that does mean crawling over my wife to get up at night. And after 22 years of marriage, there is no stopping along the way

You are correct. Sea Ray made the boat wider inside and the walk around had to be eliminated.

Which side is the house batteries? I need to hook up my charger tomorrow and the monitoring is supposed to be installed on the house batteries bank...5 batteries total/2 banks; port side [2] or starboard side [3]

It looks like my 330 has what is supposed to be a house 12 VDC indicator but either it is dead or out of calibration. The is a display like for the water tank level that always shows "POWER" in red at the bottom regardless of the battery voltage. I found I can check the battery voltage by setting the battery selector to bank 1 or two, and turning on the key for the stbd engine and then reading the normal volt meter. I still have to figure out which battery is the main starting battery and which is the house battery on the selector switch though. The single battery on/off is the port starting battery, that one was easier to figure out. - greg
