Official 290 Sundancer Thread

I ended up moving mine to the actual aft starboard corner, to the right as you walk through and into the cockpit. I figured it was better there than on the trunk. With the kids and the grill being on the aft port corner, it would be too much walking by the flag and pole to get to the grill and for the kids jumping off the swim platform. Anyway, it was very easy and I think I like it!

Just pull. Mine are attached with the industrial strength Velcro. You know where both sides are hard interlocking hooks. Just work your fingers where ever you see a gap.

Thanks, makes sense but I just didn't want to break it. Hopefully I will find the same. :thumbsup:

2006 290 sea ray NEWBIE QUESTION PLEASE HELP

First of all thank you for your great sharing..
I am about to buy a 2006 Sea Ray 290 sundancer 4,3 twin mercruiser 220 hp.
We went for a test run yesterday and the performance of the engines is as follows;
@3600 rpm - 22mph

@2500 rpm - 14 mph

We were 5 pax in the boat and the boat could not get to plane.

What do you think about it? Is it the real performance of the boat or may there be a problem with the engines? And I have to mention we also cleaned under the boat before cruising.

Waiting for your replies ASAP.

Thank you all,

Thank you all,

I agree...not right

My '95 290 with carb'd 4.3's will to 25MPH at around 3,100 RPM...+/- 45MPH at 4,400RPM

I don't have experience with the 4.3's either but I could imagine if you had 5 larger people, full gas and full water and stuff that it would be hard to get on plane. But I think it could also be that something isn't right. Trim tabs down? If you're not getting on plane you're going to go slow. FWIW, when I'm on plane I cruise about 28-30 at 3200-3500rpm. Top end with a normal load is around 43. 45mph with a light load.

Help, anybody know why the speakers in the cabin just stopped working and how to fix? Its a Clarion cmd5 and can't even find the amp that supposedly pushes the speakers up top.

If I recall correctly when I gutted my system those cabin speakers are not connected to the amp but instead just the line outs I could be wrong but I remember the set up being a bit goofy. The amp is behind that electrical panel to the right. You have to remove the whole black board in the cabinet to get access. Might be easier to first take off the door hinges, then the 4 corner screws on the board then slide or tilt it forward. The amp is a joke. Its about the size of a 2 deck of cards.

Here's a link to the upgrade I did if you're interested.

I believe there is an amp outboard the port side of the mid berth behind the panel there too. Check your balance and/or fader on the head unit. Also check the switch at the helm for the radio, IIRC, it turns on/off a set of speakers (helm or cabin).

Thanks Cincy and Bluegrass. Guess I have some work cut out for me this weekend. The remote in cockpit display doesn't show but still controls, the cockpit speakers don't work, and the cmd5 menu doesn't have a selection to adjust the subwoofer or output that someone mentioned. How frustrating. Cincy/ why did you gut your stereo system, did it stop working? I went on a trip up the Florida SW ICW and crossed some rough water in Charlotte Harbor and think that is when the speakers stopped working...now gradually strange things are occurring.
I follow the thread for our Sea Ray 290 Dancers and have enjoyed getting the boat. Your comments have been most helpful.

starting to do research for a dinghy, platform, etc

i am looking to get an extended swim platform and am looking for advise on davits, dinghy size.
i want to install a bike rack between the back of boat and davit. anybody worked that out?

Cincy, you were right the amp was there with no power to it, ended up being a simple blue/wh wire that came unconnected. Do you get a humming sound coming through the speakers when the charger is on?

thanks

I've always enjoyed clean sounding loud music. Music you can really hear when cruising. Music with real thumping base that gets the party going. I'm single and I've found the woman I enjoy being around always like a good party music boat. :) Need I say more? I know people will say "you can never get good sound quality on a boat" and I'm sure there is some truth to that in light of the accustics but it certainly doesn't hurt to have great speakers/sub and and great amp. I'm actually considering adding a second amp and another sub and two transom speakers facing out back but not sure I want to cut those holes.

To Richie- there's someone on here with a 290 who has a great extended swimplatform on their boat. I think its posted a few pages back. I need to look into that option. It looks awesome.

As to the humming, no I don't get that but bear in mind I ran all new heavy guage power and ground cables from my battery switches to amp.

Cincy - I am going to put your sound system into Dog House. How long do I need to get it all done myself? I am very mechanically inclined but a stereo moron. I also want two speakers on the stern facing aft, I am thinking high up opposite sides of the storage locker ( I also might need someone else to cut the holes :smt013:smt100). Obviously, they would occasionally get wet so what would you use and how would you wire it? Could you split them on a switch with the forward speakers?

Richie - This is what you are looking for. http://swimplatforms.com/BoatMakesModels/SeaRay/SeaRay290Sundancer0608/tabid/4523/Default.aspx

As for riding a dingy on it, there is alot of water that comes on top of the platform when coming off plane. If you are not careful you can put a foot of water in the cockpit :smt021. But if you do, I have it on excellent reference :huh: that it will drain itself quickly, mostly out the door it came in. When the engine room was checked immediately after, not a drop.

I have a friend that has a similar setup and he uses something like this http://www.boatus.com/cruising/kismet/assets/img/dinghy_davit_4.jpg I just don't know how well it would stay unless you are extremely careful. But you still have too ask the question, what happens when you have to come off plane immediately?

As far as doing the project yourself, it took me a weekend. It's not complicated but of course when you're cutting holes you want to take your time. The most time consuming aspects included:

1) Cutting the whole for the subwoofer. I chose under the helm and I much prefer that spot than the stock location which would be behind the cabin door when open. Although I may add a second sub there.

2) Running speaker wire over to the sub. I ran it back towards the batters, over the water tank then up the starboard side. Using a contractors "fish tape" helps a lot!

3) Running power and ground cable to amp.

4) Enlarging holes for cockpit speakers.

I started by, of course, taking all of the panels out of the boat. There are the two on the arch that are easy and the two bigger ones that cover the forward speakers. The one down by the cupholders at the helm is a PITA to get to if it has a screw like mine. The one on the portside requires removal of the back of the port seat if I remember. There are 2 screws on the bottom of it when you remove the bottom cushion then it slides up. The panel pops out with those plastic fastners that you see on cars alot to hold various panels in place.

Once all of the panels are out, I removed all of the speakers. I reused the same speaker wire. I then added 0 or 2 gauge power from the battery switch and ground cable to a battery and ran them along the port side. Drilled a hole in my cabinet where the amp is mounted. I used RCA cords to connect stereo to amp.

I had to enlarge the holes for the cockpit speakers. Review my previous link for pics. No much science to it. Just patience. I also added a fan to my cabinent with the amp. It's one of those long paddle wheel style they sell at the stereo shops.

Some tips:

A rotozip and a couple cutting bits is worth the purchase price.

Long sleeve shirt when sticking your arms into exposed fiberglass.

Zip ties keep things tidy.

Hope that helps!
