Official 280 Sundancer Thread

He owns a cabin over at Crooked Tree and has several 28 slips so it would be pointless to go to another dock for him. He just wants something with Gen and AC for the day for a new baby.

In that case..it would be....

that doesn't sound right. are you confirming this with a visual of the drive moving, or just how it feels when underway? Maybe it's just the way the boat handles, or seems to handle, with a single drive.

well, got my garmin 430 installed today! Thanks to everyone that posted picts of their installations. Here's what I went with. I still have to cut off the back side of the ram mount but I like the location I chose.

Can't be done I'm afraid.... He's limited to an 8' beam with that slip.

I am, unfortunately, this guy. It gets worse than the beam issue. Ive only got 12' from water to roof, if I back in, so this boat would have to sit in the water or only be raised 1.5-2 feet...and that is really pointless. The whole reason to raise the boat in the first place was so I could avoid it bouncing back and forth between the slip sides. It looks like Im limited to a 260, and possibly an older one that doesnt have an arch so I can raise it all the way out. I guess i dont see the point in raising the boat at all if the drive is still in the water.

Swim Platform Capacity - 2001 280DA

Does anyone know the capacity of the swim platform on a 280DA? I have an older PWC (1994 Kawasaki SXI 750) that has a net weight listed at 388#.

My platform sits very low to the water - can I drag this PWC onto the platform and tie it down? Or, am I better off towing it? We're not going far, we just want to be able to take it with us for a day on the river or lake.

Thanks for all your input.

Yes the drive doesn't turn until the wheel is turned 6", (3"with the rotary steering).

This has been confirmed by the Mercuiser dealer.

I own and work at a boat shop/marine and have never experienced this much slop before. The fixes on this site claim only a 50%reduction with the rack system. The rotary system is considerably harder to steer.

I'd like to go back to the rack because of its smoothness.

stategy9,

I put my standup ski(03 SXR 800) on my swim platform of my 02 280DA all the time. Its not hard to pull up onto it if you tie a rope to the rear eye and have someone pull that rope to keep the ski parallel to the stern of the boat while you pull the nose of the ski onto the platform. Otherwise the ski will just slide off.
Standups do not like to be towed at all. I have tried towing with a long rope, with a short rope, going slow and fast. I sank my ski earlier this summer while towing it about 50 feet behind the boat with the boat running one engine at 800 rpm. Just a slow cruise. I looked back and the ski was gone. I have some other ideas for towing and getting the ski onto the platform easier if your're interseted.

Thanks for the advice, crosscr. I thought the platform should be able to hold 388 lbs with ease - I was just concerned about the stresses on the bolts holding the platform to the transom while the boat was underway. Any idea what your standup weighs?

How about your platform's position in the water when the boat is not underway? On ours, the very stern of the platform sits only about 2 inches out of the water.

I like your idea of using a rope to help steady the pwc while you're pulling it up on the platform. Our boat has the two lower side eyes, plus a tow hook in the middle. As long as the platform can take the stress of having the pwc weight while underway, I'm sure I can properly tie it down so it stays put...

I appreciate any further thoughts you may have...

Cheers,
Andrew

I know the weight of my dinghy, which is a lot less than 388lbs, can take a big beating in rough water. I would think you would need something so really hold the ski in place so it won't move around.

I have a question about the mast light. When attempting to free a frozen bulb, I inadvertently shorted the fixture. I checked for the breaker on the eim, however I was unable to locate a tripped breaker. The port and starboard nav lights on deck still operate and the anchor and nav leds on the dash panel operate properly. I temporarily borrowed power from the arch lights until I can find the breaker or in line fuse that is tripped. Any ideas. Also the windlass led is always on. The dash switch does not energize or de-energize the windlass. Is this correct. It is a 2003 280 t4.3 no genset.

Thanks in advance
Paul

In response to the windlass led question, on our 2002 280 t4.3 with a genset, the dash switch does energize and de-energize the windlass. I will add it is the only switch that requires me to hit the switch twice to energize it. The first push lights the switch momentarily, with the second push the led stays on. One hit of the switch turns it off. We use it all of the time and it works fine. Hope you find the fuse.... or broken wire.

Thanks for the lead on the windlass switch. I try your combination of actions, however I don't believe it is the same situation. When I turn on the battery switches the led is on. I have never gotten it to turn off???
Thanks for the response.

Sounds as though the relay is stuck in the on position.

Hi all, new here. I have been enjoying my first season with an 04 280 DA and was looking for info about dinks for the boat. I saw a couple of posts mentioning a 6 1/2 footer and an 8 1/2 footer and was wondering if anyone else had suggestions or ways of mounting the dink so as not to affect backing in to a dock slip. Also wondering if anyone has had a generator installed in this boat that could tell me ballpark on what it would cost. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Presentation had a generator installed this past winter on his 280. I believe he posted it here. Can't help on the dinks but might be able to on the drinks. Congrats on the boat.

I paid $8,500 in February 2008.

The unit I selected was the Westerbeke 3.0 MPV.

I am glad we did it.

If / when we sell the boat I do not expect this to become a wise financial decision nor do I expect to get much more for the boat because of the generator. It could help it sell faster but that’s about it.

We had this installed for our comfort and convenience like air conditioning and other appliances when away from shore power.

PS: The above price was a deal in my area. I had it done off season and that was part of why they cut the labor price.
