Official 280 Sundancer Thread

You might want to check out the Mid Atlantic forum for the get togethers. There is a north and south bay threads going if I recall.

Weird spring, port engine battery dead, I assumed that the "2" batteries were the house battery and starting battery for port, so I replaced them both. Port starts up great now but then I looked at the battery diagram in the manual and it says the "2" batteries are for the starboard engine and house battery... Doesn't make sense.

Continued weird spring! Went out and anchored for a few hours... Then when starting engines, both at 102 degree's, port starts fine, starboard starts but keeps cutting out. Finally got it started, got on plane then starboard cuts out and I look down and starboard engine is 170 degree's. I limped back to lift, was dark, so I'm starting a new day. Thermistat or something blocked? Any thoughts? Thanks!

Go by the wiring diagram. I originally thought it was the Starboard but started thinking I was wrong when you posted what you did about the port battery. The wiring diagram in the manual will be correct unless someone has done some re-wiring of their own.

Going to have my mechanic out and check it the battery issue but I need to check on the overheating of the starboard, hope it's just the seawater filters... Sheesh...

When is the last time the raw water impellers were changed? Did it get over 170? Did you get an alarm? I don't remember the exact spec temp numbers for the V6 engines but I think 165-170 is pretty normal. Any higher than that really and you have a problem.

Normal temp for my engines is 170-175. I had the same issue with my starboard engine suddenly stopping, not starting, etc. It ended up being the IAC (idle air control valve). Might be worth checking that out.

I have the same setup and both motors run right around 165 all day long.

This is a good post. I just had a battery issue lasting two seasons. After MM sold me the boat the batteries were never right and they couldn't figure it out... I brought someone in to figure it out and they all reflect the above diagram now. I ended up replacing all the batteries, but its good to know which switch does what.

I'm looking for a similar image for a single engine 2004 280 Sundancer. I'd like to confirm which battery is the House vs the Cranking battery.

Thanks. I have the manual and have poured over all the sections related to the batteries, panels, wiring, schematics, etc. I find a lot of related info of course, but everything labels the batteries as "1" or "2" - nothing that denotes "House" vs. "Cranking" or similar labels. Inside the engine compartment i can clearly see which is which, but again, find no labels to identify which is "1" vs. "2" on the switch above.

Jason is right, see the freaking wiring diagram. But the short version is that there is no "house battery" on a 280 single engine! The two batteries are in parallel to double the cranking amps. Both batteries, whether linked together, or used independently, provide power to both engine and house loads.

See my post above. The wiring diagram is pretty clear, so it would appear your ability to read a wiring diagram is limited. I don't mean that as an insult, wiring diagrams take a little prior training to understand. I'd be in the same position if someone asked me to read a sheet of music.

The important point is that all of the smaller Sea Rays do not have isolated house and cranking batteries. All batteries provide power to an engine, or engines if an emergency circuit is installed, as well as power to the house circuits.

Henry

I don't think that's what the 280 wiring diagram shows. My recollection is the starboard engine battery also feeds house circuits. I don't have the diagram handy so I can't tell.

Your diagram is correct however, the manual states the starboard side has the house battery and a starting battery, 1 each. I just had my mechanic re-wire my batteries to co-inside with your diagram as I was having issues with my batteries...

My mechanic found air in the fuel line, starboard engine. He said that's not related to over heating, I took it out and she's running great! Both engines run a temp of 152 to 154, all day long... I'm a HAPPY CAMPER! : )
