Why weird? It's actually designed that way to keep the drive safe and not let an operator damage it due to user error. The single up/down rocker switch only allows the drive to go up so far... the "safe operating" range. This is known as "trim". Above that, while the engine is on, could damage expensive things in the drive.I love it when I answer my own questions. Still seems weird to be up only
The square button cannot really be accidentally pushed - this controls "tilt" - for when the engine is off.
Don't take this the wrong way - it's not meant to be offensive - it sounds like you're pretty new to this boating thing? You would probably find a lof of benefit from reading through the engine's owner's manual - or obtain a copy through a Merc dealer. The Sea Ray owner's manuals have lot's of good info in them, as well. If you don't see your model/year - go to a different year and/or model. The general boating info will be the same.
It would also be good to take a safe boating course.
