Official 19SPX/21SPX/SPX190/SPX210 Thread

Can someone point me in the right direction on how to mount a rope to the ski eye in the back? … Is there an attachment or something that connects to the eye and then to the rope??

In concurrence with Keg17, I’ll add you don’t want to simply “use any rope.”

You want to obtain a rope specifically designed for pulling a skier or tube and they aren’t always the same rope as you want to get a tow rope with the right weight capacity of the individuals you will be pulling (I.e., one, two, three, four, all the way up to six persons - my family simply KISS and we just buy single person SKI ropes and then SEPARATE tow ropes designed to pull six for pulling tubes / towables even though the most we can pull with any of our half dozen different towables is three adults.)

The other neat thing about “using the right tool (or rope) for the job is that THEY COME WITH HOOKS specifically designed not only to attach to the back of the boat BUT ALSO are rated for appropriate weight capacities! See attached photos …

Finally, take a few moments and watch this video (and maybe even a couple others) - there isn’t a whole heckuva lot to be aware of but, what there is will make it a lot more fun for everyone in involved (this video starts addressing the appropriate lines (or ropes) to use at the 2:50 minute mark):

(There have been some pretty horrific tragedies when people try to “learn as they go along” or, by “trial and error” when it comes to pulling humans behind a boat with most among the most common being persons behind the boat winding up with a rope wrapped around them (waist, leg, arm, neck).
There is at least one near disaster involving a slack rope getting wrapped around a young adult posted by a member here on CSR but, I wouldn’t even begin to remember how to find it. I know it took a lot of guts for that member to post it up and it still serves as a reminder to me …

So, maybe I wasn’t as clear as I should have been. I have purchased a correct (weight rating and use) tow rope for the two person tube that I have and want to tow. I am trying to be sure that I do have all the correct hookups or connections so that when the tube is connected to the boat that things are safe. My 2016 is an inboard/outboard and has a tow point at the stern. The design of the tow point looks like the one in the picture I posted. The opening at the top of the point is too small to get the tow rope in. My original question was meant to ask if there is an intermediate connection (rope with special/smaller connection) between this point and the tow rope.

See the second picture, is this what I need?

This week my wife and I are going out with a friend who been boating for years who’s going to give me lessons on how to tow riders. I actually watched the video that was posted earlier today.

My goal is always safety first when boating.

Okay, my error okubricko - I think you may be able to simply use a tow rope with a loop on the end.

Here you go; most of these ropes only have loops on the ends:
https://www.amazon.com/s?k=boat+tow...x=Boat+tow+,aps,196&ref=nb_sb_ss_ts-doa-p_3_9

*IF* what you pictured is in fact a tow point (and I’d verify that somehow if no other members can do so) , I ASSume you simply hook the loop at one end of the tow line / rope and the inflatable tube to the other

But, I personally canNOT confirm that what you pictured on the back of your boat is in fact a hook point intended to pull the kind of weights we’re taking about … im confident maybe someone else here can …

Our outboard has a light pole up in front of the motor, actually centered, just behind the padded sun deck but we choose to not use that as a tow point.

Instead, we use the two “eyelets” on either corner of the stern, right about at water level …

We use a self-centering tow harness like this one I am linking as well as the attached photos.

https://www.amazon.com/s?k=self+centering+tow+harness&crid=C31IQK8LGCVJ&sprefix=Self+centering+tow,aps,372&ref=nb_sb_ss_ts-doa-p_1_18

Have an awesome time!

Okubricko has a stern drive. The picture he posted is what he has. To hook a tow rope to it, simply place the loop of the two rope over the "horn". That's it.

Hey all, just wondering if anyone knew where the depth finder was in the boat. Assuming it's in the rear in the back compartment/engine bay. I've got a 190 ob. Going to put a lowrance thru hull in and hoping to save some shop time and cost by having the back accessable right away.

Bump.

It will be in the engine compartment just aft of the back seat. You may have to remove the bottom flooring. Crawl under the boat and you will see the depression in the keel. That's where you'll drill the hole. Look up the SeaRay transducer part number - it will fit the depression perfectly.

Hi all I’m new here. Don’t have a sea ray yet but going to look at a 2018 Spx 210 this weekend. My concern with it is the hour meter shows almost 800 hours and they said it’s incorrect as they bought it last year with way less. They are actually having the dealer come out to verify it with a computer. My question is could it be higher from leaving the key in the on position? If there is a discrepancy, can the dealer make the gauge show the correct hours? Thanks!

The dealer can read the hours off the ECU and that is the real number. The hour gauge on the tach counts hours of ignition on time. Pretty sure there is no way to reset it.

Does anyone know what the top speed is of the Spx210 with the 4.5 200hp? Is it adequate power or is it underpowered? Anyone have any experience with the enertia prop with this setup? Thanks

Mercury performance bulletin for it. If the link doesn't work, basically top end was 44.3 with a 17" vengeance. Best cruise at 2500, falls off after 300 in mpg.

thanks! Interesting that it only hit 4500 rpm with a 17” prop. Doesn’t this engine max closer to 4800 rpm? Is a 17” prop stock? Thanks

I'm not sure, I have a 190 ob, but I'd imagine the bulletin for the 190 200hp is a 17 black max. The 150 ob is a 19 black max, I know that much.

Interesting, I clicked on the PDF and it shows top speed of 47.4 mph. Apparently they just showed up to 4500 RPM on the initial page but didn’t consider it Top speed. I’m fine with it if it’s 47.4ish and a 17 pitch prop. Could probably get to 50 with a prop change I would guess.

I can NOT believe the 2023 prices of this boat!!! I Bought a brand new 2014 19 SPX with Mercury 150 for 34k. I was at the dealer yesterday and his best price for the same thing is $57k!!! That is insane! Anyone that spends that money for this boat is insane as well! I had 20 some boats in my lifetime and this boat is just OK. The ride is not that great as is porpoises! I got to ride an I/O version at that did the same thing. Not to mention the lake I run the bow does not take medium waves good as well...it crashes down and slams hard! Currently I have a 1996 Boston Whaler Montauk 17....much smaller boat and takes the waves much better...couldnt believe it.

Hard to understand how trimming motor would not eliminate porpoising.
Besides offering us your opinion on SPX, what is the better boat ( bow rider, full windshield, with seating for 8) and at what price?

I can only speak from my own personal experience, but...

My 190 SPX OB CANNOT be made to porpoise. She comes up on plane perfectly flat with no bow rise and I can trim it way out. It will start to ventilate before it porpoises. My suggestion would be to see if the motor height on the transom is right. I have heard where the factory did, in some cases, mount them too low.

Ride is subjective. What is the boat being compared to? My 190 rides better than any other 19 footer I ever owned.

I also have a Montauk. For sure even my little 15 footer rides better than the SR. But, it's a different hull shape and construction design. That boat is as solid as a tank.

The BEST boat is an outboard fiberglass bow rider with a full windshield and seating for no more than 6. Also, the best boat is an outboard center console. Since there are 2 "bests" that's why I own 2.

No one can say what's best. A fisherman, a racer, an overnighter, etc, etc. all have different wants and needs and that's why they make the variety that they do.

Price is whatever you can afford. If your personal best is not within reach, keep saving and wait. The reason many people only keep boats a short time is because they bought cheap and not what they needed.

Hi All,
New to the forums, but not to Sea Rays. See my profile if you care to learn my life history.

I'm looking at SPX 210 probably used, but very confused about what I see on boats for sale and what the "Build your boat" shows on Sea Ray website.

For example, submersible swim step doesn't even get a mention on the website, even for the 230, but I've seen photos of it on most all SPX models I believe (stern drive only of course).

I'm wondering where I can find something that accurately reflects what's available on these boats? (I know I can go to the dealership but not ready to take on a salesman yet.)

Second question - We live on a 25K acre in TX that can get pretty windy. Not a ton of boat traffic on it, but a fair number of giant wake surfing wakes to deal with on top of the wind.

So I'm interested in how the 210's ride? That wider bow makes me worry a little about it slapping down hard, but we definitely like the space and seating available in this line of boats.

Also waffling on OB/Sterndrive. Lots of plusses to OBs in our climate, but the clean easy to navigate swim platform on the sterndrives is tempting since we are no longer as agile as we used to be. Feedback on pros/cons on propulsion options welcome.

Submersible swim step? If you mean boarding ladder it is standard equipment on all models. I thought the web site showed what was std. or opt. pretty well. But maybe it would be better to simply go and look at one. If approached by a salesman just say you are just looking.

I talked about the ride in post 958.

I/O Cons:
- time consuming and laborious maintenance
- the engine takes up valuable and much needed space
I/O Pros:
- none (said after owning an I/O for 35 years)

OB Pros:
- easy maintenance
- HUGE storage space
- The engine can be mounted to provide optimum performance
- You get TWO swim platforms (LOL)
OB Cons:
- haven't found any yet

As far as the wide swim platform, we personally don't need it. The full sun pad is where we spend most of our time. As far as needed agility, both versions have the same ladder so boarding is the same in either case.

I do most of my own maintenance, so that's a big thing for me. I'm so sorry I waited until I was in my 70's to finally switch to a 4-stroke outboard.

And, of course, as always, just $0.02 and YMMV.
