Official 1998 Sea Ray Sundancer 290 Thread

Do you guys swap your outdrives every year? My port is counter rotating, starboard normal. Was wondering if you guys swapped them to maintain even wear on forward/ reverse gearing.

Doesn't the lower units have physically different gears from one another to give you the counter rotation? I know when I was pricing lower units you had to buy the correct one you wanted to replace.

No, same exact lower unit port just runs in reverse with a different prop than the starboard that runs in forward. You can see how just the shifting linkages are swapped on the throttle bracket.

So, at the boat today, buddy of mine came down and we shot the breeze. Wanted to get the Queens kayak off the bow so bought some racks. Bolts are WAY to long so Lowes tomorrow for much shorter ones and plastic caps so she doesn’t scratch her legs heading to the bow…but visibility from my vantage point is much better and it’s easier to deploy the kayak for the aging. ;)

Has anybody had a problem with their head system. For some reason the fuse keeps popping now when i turn it on. Any help would be great
Jeff I do not have this problem but have read about it. The bellows sticks or has …put whatever noun you want here…in it. Also there is a new motor design that supposedly works better and is easier to install but it’s not free. The bellows motor is the only “current draw” part of the system with the possible exception on the vacuum cut off switch being grounded. My .02

This reminds me that I need something to cover up the old school coax cable connection along the side of my boat. that dam thing takes a sample of my DNA once in a while.

the reverse lower on an alpha is an actual CR unit and differs from the standard rotation. It’s true the linkage is in the opposite position from the standard when in F/R but some of the internals are different, primarily the bearing carrier is shorter on the CR side

the shift dog and gears are the same so what you’re suggesting would probably work but I’ve never heard anyone try that

Thanks pal, been doing some research too before i head down to the boat. Was on vacation for 2 weeks and little bro decided to hang on the boat while i was gone. He also thought it was a good idea to take 3 shits in 4 days. And fill the holding tank. Going with a clogged toilet, overfilled system of stuck bellow or duckbill. Will keep you informed

Ugh, that’s all I’ve got, Ugh

Hey Group, does anyone have a maintenance app recommendation? I have a paper folder at home that I keep all the receipts in and write on the what was done, engine hours and the like but I use my pad on the boat most days and would like to keep a clean looking running log.

I believe the Active captain app has what you are looking for but not sure.

Thanks Mitch, I did a quick search that came up with nothing other than the community page. I’m not on the boat so the app doesn’t have full functionality unless hooked to the Garmin. Going to call Garmin now. Usually a 3 hour wait but they have been very reliable on the call back feature.
Jon
Close the loop on this, Active Captain does not have a maintenance log ability per Garmin. I’ll keep looking.

There used to be a guy on here that built an app to do just what your are looking for but can't remember his name or the name of the app. I think he had a 280.

Is there an issue with leaving the camper enclosure on over winter? Boat is in slip all winter and covered but it's in the Midwest (Kansas). Was hoping I could be lazy and set it up and leave it rather than taking the other cover on and off each weekend. Didn't know if cold temps and wind would really mess things up

BoatingSuite! I used it on our 290, it was a good app. I moved back to a paper binder so I can keep receipts and such but it did work well during the time I used it

I keep mine up all year long especially during the winter.

I use my boat on occasion so it's easier then removing the cockpit cover every time.
