Official (1990-1993) 270/290 DA thread

Welcome to the club SOGO

I think I will look for air conditioning. buy small generator for shore and run shore power cord to it. love this boat and have put to much money in it. new motor, hoses, alternator, starter, top and list goes on. One daughter off to college in 1 year other daughter 11in private school. cottage on small lake were we don't use boat only jet skis and pontoon. boat gets used 2 to 3 weeks a year spends rest of time in garage.we hope to some point leave at marina in lake George for July, August next year.

I would say as far as installing a marine genset, the cost would be quite high for what you get from having one. I know most folks don't run them at night when you would think they woould be run for A/C because of noise and carbon monoxide issues. That said I have a 2700 watt inverter run off of 2 separte batteries with their own alternator and battery switch, and I can run a fan all night long, and also use it for micro wave, coffee pot, table lamp, (no 12v house lights needed. and charging phones ipads etc. works great and the cost is a fraction of the genset. As for portable gennys, I would not use one on a boat for several reasons, the biggest being the genny is not grounded to the electrical system of the boat and can cause some issues with the boats electrical system, not to mention the possibility of carbon monoxide making it into the cabin. Good Luck and enjoy your boating season.

A lot of people in bay were we stay for week have small generators carry on shore to run there air conditioning. talked to a few of them says it works well.So I thought it maybe way to go.

Greetings All, I have a 1993 Sea Ray Sundancer 270 DA with a 7.4 Mercruiser (Bravo II Outdrive), spent all winter re-doing the interior with oak (very happy with how it turned out). Replaced the hot water heater, battery charger, trim pump bracket and a whole bunch of other small stuff...it's in the water and running like a top. My question is about fuel consumption...it's got a 4 barrel carb, does anyone know if I would save some gas if I put a 2 barrel carb on it. I don't need the top speed, we generally just kind of putt around just up on plane....any tips on gas saving? Thanks for your time...

Hi Captain, I would not change to a 2 BBl carb. The engine will work too hard for the fuel it needs and that will reduce economy. I have the 454 with 4 BBl carb, and I can tell you that we burn quite a bit more fuel at planeing speed than down around 8-10 knots which is where we run most of the time. My boat used to be kept in the water year round and has a painted bottom. I wil eventually soda blast it and repaint it to make it glass smooth, then we will check fuel economy on plane and at hull speed to see which is best. Also we have 1100 hours on the original drive and engine, so I don't think she minds putting along as you say.

believe it or not, fuel economy on my boat changes about .3 mile's to the gallon for the best cruising speed and WOT. And I would say that's the most difference. I'm using a Lowrance HDS-8 gen two with fuel sensors. 1.77 mpg is the best cruising I have seen yet, maybe about 27-28 mph

It won't get on plane CaptJeff with a 2bbl......just the way it works. My best cruise on plane is 25-30mph with a Bravo 1. That's 3800-4000rpms. 1600rpms off plane = 7mph, Mike.

Very much appreciate the advice, it's all taken on board, guess I'll just continue to budget a bit extra for fuel....

First time boat owner! Love this thread! Nice to hear about others with similar boat!

Re: S

Swimplatforms.com would be glad to relieve you of a couple of grand:

I keep debating Jerry on whether I would like that extended platform. Theirs seem to be the best! We even looked at a 1990 270DA with it installed. I like being able to see the outdrive (if and when fouled with sea weed) and we don't swim that much. The whole bolt on look takes away from the styling of the integrated platform for me. Now I do like the look of the 2002 300DA platform....go figure, Mike.

We are not using our boat much anymore. Wife does not want me out there hauling the beast up and down the highway to spend a month in Canada. I could insist, but, I would just end up with an unhappy wife – that is not fun. We did it seven times, so, I guess that is enough and it is time to hang up the trailer and just be happy with cruising around our little lake.

Those extensions are nice for some people, but, like you, we do not swim anymore. Just some morning or evening cruising. My dock neighbor has a '91 270DA that he currently has out of the water so that he can install an extended platform from Swimplatforms.com on. He is also installing an AC unit so that he can have air at the dock. I tried to tell him to sell and buy a boat that has all of those features and a generator that he wants, but, he wants to spend his bucks, so, that is that. He has his boat on my trailer. I just hope that I will see it again someday when I want to pull my boat for service.

I would like the platform also but don't like the idea of not being able to access the drive's. If I have to clean or change props..... for get it. I also would have to change my davit system that has so many holes in my swim deck now. One more negative would be the weight. I have a good two hundred pounds with the dink and motor, then add over two hundred pounds back farther yet. this boat is only so big to take the weight so far back. Other than that, I"m sure I would love it.

my two cents

Dan

Thanks for the info...a couple grand is not what i had in mind :( I have two little ones who love to swim and it would be really nice but there are other things i need to put the money towards..Like a TV onboard...hahahaha

We like having AC when at the dock......a genny would be a real tight fit in the 270. I'm sure you'll get your trailer back Jerry. They are nice to have and I would not want to be without ours, Mike.
