Official (1990-1993) 270/290 DA thread

Ha ha...she is actually thinking ....."he spends too much damn money on this boat!"
The boat had some junk speakers in it when I bought it with the spacers already there.

Hi All,

Great forum! Thanks for all the information and advice.

I'm a new boater and have made a purchase agreement on a 1991 270 DA. We Live on Vancouver Island, and even if this boat is not the one, we are sure that searay is the right brand for our three person family. We will have an engine survey, structural survey and a sea trial next week. Obviously there are a lot of concerns, but one of the main issues visible are water stains on the celiling liner in the main cabin and water stains on the wall and ceiling liner of the mid-cabin (cave, the girls call it). Does anyone have experience with this and can it be a symptom of something very serious? (i.e. just condensation, or a leak from the radar arch, for example).

We are happy with the price we are paying and accept that there is going to be some work to do with the aesthetics on a boat of this age, but we are not interested in serious engine or structural issues.

Thanks,

We have a 92 DA that we just bought last month. It shows none of those stains. Something is going on drain wise or something. I can't help as to how serious though.

I would start at the radar arch attachment. There are bolts accessible from inside the gunnels. Check them for tightness. I attached a piece of tubing to the tip of a tube of silicone and caulked the area where the arch meets the side of the boat. It is tricky to caulk as the window gives you very limited access.

I looked at lot of these boats. Seams like all had some staining there but one. Even boats without the arch. As soon as I can figure out how to redo all my headline, it's getting done. Seems like somedays' it look allright, the next day looks like chrap.
The guy I bought my boat from said the camper top leaked on the dash bad. Don't know were my staining come from, but never got wet in the rain since I have had it.

Here's a pic of this winter's work, mine is set up different than the new boats. The back wall is two pieces of cloth and not one.

Thanks for the information. I'll ask the surveyor to have a pretty good look at that area. I'll try to post back what the result is. If we buy the boat I'll back for some more free help!

All the best,

I have a 90 270/290. The shower sump pump is under the aft cabin mattress, mine is missing. It looks like a thru hull just dumps water into that area and a pump wit float switch pumps it out. My question is should I pull that thru hull out and splice a hose to go to a sump box with the pump and float as one unit. It just seems like a bad idea the way it is done from the factory. Everything is in good shape in that area except for the holes where the old pump was. The previous owner took that pump out and used it for a condensation pump for the a/c unit under the v berth. The shower has never been used on this boat! Thanks for the help

I have the same boat. My a/c and shower both drained to that area. It was rotten when I bought the boat. I extended the hoses into the small center section with the pump so water is only in the one area. In retrospect I should have added one of the small plastic sump boxes because the pump can't get all the water out. However now the water only drains into the small center section (instead of the side areas) and it's been completely fiber glassed.

Thanks Dick270da. Does that through hull just pop out with a hose clamped to it or does it screw out? It looks like mine is stuck down with silicone.

Sorry, I had the work done so I can't answer your question. On another note, in the engine compartment there is an hour meter in a small box with a switch. Any idea what the switch controls? Thanks! Dick

What can we do about the top deck on the front of the boat? I have been doing the Buff Magic on the rest of the boat. Looking at the nonslip surface on the top, wonding what I can do about that? I run over on it a little bit with the buffing wheel, Looks like it may actually wheel out becuase it's not that rough. Before I go attempting anything, I figure I'd ask here.

I use buff magic on it. Many people recommend woody wax but I've never used it.

This morning I swapped the squarebore plate with the proper squarebore to spreadbore plate. Here is a few pics:]

Quint4 how did your boat do after the new carb? Was there an improvement over the old one? Interested in how it worked. Thanks

I don't think Quint4 has hit the water yet.....I know I havn't, Mike.

Mike, what size carb is on your engine? Mine has a 600 Edelbrock. Hardly enough for a 350 in my opinion.
I plan on installing my 750 Holley soon. That is if it ever stops raining. I have an adapter for it.

I'll be trying a different cam and intake later.

Dave

Will give a full report on the Edelbrock 1410 when I put her in the water ( it is 55 degrees and raining.....still!)

50 degrees, windy and raining here today.

Here's what I was doing friday when if was amost 80 and sunny. Installing Gas filters. Ebay find for $25 each new. Have more in the fitting i think.

Here's another little project to pass the time while it freakin' rains.
We never have enough counter space for food etc. I bought a large bamboo cutting board. I made a cardboard template of my sink opening.I traced the template on to the cutting board and cut it at a 15 degree angle.
I have been sanding and re-fitting it for about an hour. Those more skilled in woodworking could probably get it to fit perfectly.
