NFL Loud Stadium Question???

Why do you assume to know other peoples opinions just because they ask a question? Who said quiet? I have asked if engineering a stadium to gain advantage is sporting. As a matter of fact, that is not "just fans cheering". So is it?

MM

Exactly! I imagine that the new 49ers stadium is engineered or noise too. Now the Seachickens will start "whining" about crowd noise too. A team should be able to hear the plays called at least. Supposed to be the best team not the loudest stadium.

I have the utmost respect for both you guys but I disagree on this point. It's called home field advantage. If you don't like it then play harder to win the advantage. As long as there are no projectiles other than the ball on the field. All teams learn hand signal just for these occasion.
Just my opinion but what do I know? We used to play without pads.

Mike, I've heard that rumor about the stadium being engineered to "reinforce and amplify" sound.

My response to this is "Prove It!" She me the engineering notes that prove that a desire to make the stadium louder was any part of the original plans or designs.

Until then, remember the old saying...."Put up or...."

The Hawks last night really spanked the Saints. They out played them, out ran them, out passed them, stopped their high ranked offense and defense and dominated in every facet of the game.

Oh, and during the post game interview, Drew Brees said that while the stadium was loud, it didn't interfere with the Saints' ability to communicate on the field. So much for the complaints about the noise.

What would he say? "Oh man, we couldn't hear out there" and encourage it more?

I just want to see good games, not crowd noise contests. Maybe ESPN is making all this up for good stories, but if it is true, my opinion is it is not good sportsmanship like we would teach the kids in pee wee football and it does not improve the game. It seems clear to me that the Saints offense could not function in that environment, Brees comments not withstanding.

The Seahawks did play very well and Wilson was amazing to watch in last nights game, just wish it could have been the duel we fans of the game, not the teams, wanted to see.

Before anyone gets their undies in a bunch I'm actually undecided on my question but since no one will debate it I have tried to push the other side of the debate.

I am definitely against the "flag football" rules and think there are too many subjective rules in the game.

It seems no one here feels that engineering a stadium to gain advantage on the field is bad sportsmanship, or if they did they were to chicken to speak up and don't count. So that is the answer to my question.

I had hoped for a little more in depth and interesting discussion of the topic as it is raining, cold, and I'm bored with winter...

"Yes, architect Jon Niemuth somehow managed the clever trick of making an outdoor stadium as loud as a domed arena. Those were his marching orders from owner Paul Allen when planning began to replace the late, great Kingdome. Allen, who grew up as a University of Washington football fan, wanted the raucous atmosphere of Husky Stadium."

Any road team can silence the fans by taking away the momentum. A couple quick scores or a take away or two and most stadiums will go quiet. I'm sure ESPN is making more out of the noise than what it really is as do most of our media these days. Just wait until a some team has to play the SB in the snow this year.

MM- I wasn't bashing your opinion or the question you asked. It just came across like you were blaming the loss on crowd noise (or that they built the stadium to project alot of noise). It's football and every home team has some type of advantage right? I know that certain hockey teams practice the bounce of the boards and actually set up plays for this. Is this cheating?

You're all just jealous. Play the game, quit whining about the fan support. I've been to several SeaHawks games over the years and since the new stadium and uniforms the 12th Man rumble saw how our voices could make it tough on the opposing team. Why have fans in the stands at all if they can't support their team and cheer. Now Mike, you want to 'limit' it? Come on man! This is the NFL. BE LOUD, cheer on your team and make it a place they don't want to play. We have fun with the opposing fans in the stands too. I've always been respectfully teasing those that come into our house. I'm not a confrontational or violent fan, but I love the Seahawks and it's a blast to be part of that insane crowd. I watched the SF 49ers play St. Louis Sunday, and saw many SF fans sitting in their seats on a 3rd and 2 play. I was in shock. Seahawks' fans don't sit nearly the entire game, especially on the opposing team's 3rd and 2.

#GOHAWKS!!! Can't wait until Sunday Ken. This should be good.
I'll be there. Same bet as with Scott?

The Aints play in a domed stadium just like my lousy team. I am pretty site the Saints have benefited from extremely loud home crowds in the past. There is a reason why the home records of most teams are better than their away finishes.

Here is a link to that quote. Believe what you want. It's the fans that make it rock.

Loud is only part of the story

So in closing, I just wanted to posit the idea that Seattle's stadium design is only a small part of the noise equation. As more and more media outlets try to understand why visiting teams struggle in the Pacific Northwest, they seem to be snowballing this notion that Paul Allen hired a team of diabolical acoustic wizards to formulate a secret blueprint in sound engineering. It's getting a bit ridiculous. Even Niemuth pointed out that his firm "can't create fans to be loud and rabid and crazy the way [Seahawks] fans are." The CLink was built to rival indoor venues by moving the fans closer to the field while including a section of metal bleachers. That's the simple truth of the matter. The stadium designs serve to level out the playing field with other indoor/domed stadiums. What takes the volume at Seahawks home games to a whole other level has everything to do with the passion and commitment of the 12th Man.

If your lousy team is the Vikings, they were my favorite team as a kid. Great memories of Page, Marshall, Eller and the rest of the purple people eaters playing what seemed like every weekend in the absolute nastiest weather. No domes back then. Imagine some of these loudmouth look-at-me prima donnas in todays NFL trying to play back then in those conditions.

Yeah.... what he said !!!

How many times do we have to kick San Francisco ass up and down the coast....??? I see another win for the current BEST TEAM IN THE NFL this coming Sunday in SFO..... Your BS claim about noise will disappear like your beloved 49's shot of any kind of playoff chance.....

I'll be there. Same bet as with Scott?

Nope, last time I bet we lost. Last time before that I bet on a game was for a hat in the XL SuperBowl. I ended up buying a Pittsburgh hat for a local Steeler fan the Monday after the SuperBowl. I'll be confident, but won't curse my Hawks AGAIN!

I have no horse in last nights game but since the coverage included the noise levels I thought it an interesting topic to discuss.

We were told the stadium was built to maximize the noise. So we are not talking about cheering but rather an engineered advantage. Is that sporting?

One team performed their choreographed plays at a reasonable sound level, while the visitor had to perform at what OSHA calls an unsafe work environment. Is that sporting?

But like so many things in our world technology, in many ways, is ruining the game I love.

MM
If your theory is true, it still takes fans to fill the stadium and make the noise. I've been there and it's loud regardless of the shape or style of the stadium, because we've created a culture where no one is sitting down and everyone is screaming.

Arrowhead is loudest.
Was.

You need to fill those seats with people willing to cheer though. I didn't see that in your game on Sunday v. St. Louis.

And that......is why we refer to them as the Sea Chickens! Lol

Based on reporting they did and hence the question.

My links did not link properly, ESPN and Popuar Mechanics seem to believe the stadium was designed for noise.

.

I love watching football, but I'll never be the fan of any team that you guys are. I like my chair, DVR, and Internet stats while watching a game. I may rewatch a play several times before I move on in the game, and that could be any game, not just my team. I couldn't imagine going to a Seahawks game, wearing ear protection, and standing for hours.

Thanks for all the posts and good luck to all your teams as the heart of the season continues.

MM

P.S. Todd bet Ken for all of us. LOL

One thing that was lightly touched on in one of those articles was the fan base in Seattle. I watch games from all over the NFL and in most of the stadiums I see the fans sitting comfortably (and quietly, I might add) in their seats for the majority of the game.

C'mon up to Seattle some time for a Hawks game. You will be on your feet yelling, screaming, stomping your feet and cheering for the entire game. NOBODY sits during a Seahawks game. If you did you'd miss the game because everyone in front of you is standing. It was that way in the Kingdome, is that way now, and will probably be that way for many years to come.

WE LOVE OUR SEAHAWKS!!!

Call 'em whatever you want now, because pretty soon you'll be calling them the "Superbowl Champion Seattle Seahawks!!"

Sorry, they won't get past the Panthers the next time.

There are some interesting replies in this thread.........you guys are funny

Todd is spot on about the SF fans not standing on 3rd downs when they are on defense, saw it first hand at the Super Bowl last year and couldn't believe it.

I got your back Todd, I know we both hate a certain team (whose HC recently cheated and is currently lying his a$$ off about it)...........Go Seahawks, I like them.

You mean if they visit us here in the playoffs?
