Welcome Eric.......

Welcome,

I had an '87 S-24 Sorrento. It was a great boat. It made the 26 mile trip from Long Beach to Catalina Island many times.

Enjoy.

Thanks for the welcome guys and yes I plan on making a few trips over to Catalina...

I first need to get over one obstacle, I need to get her running first. I'll be pulling the motor out this weekend for inspection and most likely a rebuild.

But totally looking forward to being a part of this forum!!!

Welcome :)

Looking forward to pictures - looked the model up online - nice boat. :)

Thanks i really like it here's a picture of when I picked her up its a s23!!! Sorry for the big picture...

Welcome to the Sorrento Club!! There are a few of us on here. Looks like a nice boat, sorry to hear about the engine trouble, hope you find out it is nothing serious. Enjoy!!

It doesn't say what part of the LA area you are from but if you are anywhere near Huntington Beach there is a good repair shop there.

The name of the business is Boat Doc. Frank Coburn is the owner. The place doesn't look like much but they do great work.

Great boat. I have the same one and it has been restored pretty much. Mine has less than 300 original hours on it!!! My trim motor just died though!

Sweet is there any way you could post up some pics or your restored Sorrento!!!

I'm in the process of rebuilding the motor!

The block and heads are at a local machine shop getting prepped up.

Im looking to get a few more HP from the 5.7 mercruiser. I want to put a new intake manifold and cam. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Hi Fellas!

I just bought a 1988 S23 myself. I've used it a few times in Newport Bay and outside the harbor a little. I have it down in BAJA right now. I have some property in San Quintin.
I had one short trip in Bahia De Los Angeles but it overheated. I thought it was the thermostat but now I think it's the impeller.
Anyway, when it was running good it was real fast and powerful so I like it alot. Should be a decent fishing boat when I get it set up right and a good dive boat with the excellent swim step and ladder it has.
I'm a little nervous about replacing the impeller but I think I can do it.

Very nice looking boat, I'll bet you can't wait to get it all back together & in the water. Have you had it in the water or did it have engine trouble when you got it?

Thanks!
No I used it twice with no problem about 5+ hours cruising around Newport Bay and a couple of speed runs out in the ocean. No problems.
So I towed it to BOLA in Baja to catch yellowtail.
It ran great on the way to our 1st fishing spot which was about 15 miles out of town. The water was very smooth so I was able to run full throttle for about 5 minutes and then back down a little when I got out of the bay. The boat ran perfectly. Very fast.
We got to the spot and drifted over and repositioned a couple of times. On about the third drift the engine warning horn went on and I saw the temp gauge pegged at 220. I shut it off and let it cool but it heated back up when I tried it again.
I pulled the thermostat cover and worked the thermo a little with a screw diver to see if it was stuck. Put the cover back on and the battery was dead. My back-up battery was charged and wouldn't crank the motor so we were done. Had to get towed back to town.
I recharged the battery and ran the motor with muffs and it ran at a perfect 143 degrees for a good 20-30 minutes. So maybe the thermo was stuck. But I ran it pretty hard for about 15 minutes and it only overheated after we stopped to fish. And then it took another 10 minutes or so of on/off idle running before it over heated.
My other guess is that the impeller came apart somewhat when I was running hard. But I have the work order from the last owner and the impeller had been changed almost exactly a year ago. The boat did sit for the almost a year so maybe it got brittle and came apart.
I did run it for a minute or 2 with no muffs on once before I realized it was a raw water system so I may have damaged the impeller then.
But I will change both thermo and impeller and maybe the check valve ball/spring if I can figure out where it is.

Thanks!

They say it only takes a few seconds to toast one that way.

Seems doubtful that it could get ruined that fast but maybe. It's a plastic impellor inside of a plastic housing. Can't imagine there is a lot of friction or heat.
But yeah, that's what "they" say so maybe.

that is the absolute truth. running without water for even a minute will burn the impeller up.

Well if the impeller is damaged, other posters have stated that the impeller will not be able to pump enough water at idle to keep the engine cool. But may pump enough at power to cool the engine.
After my overheating episode, I ran the engine at idle with the muffs on. It ran at a perfect 143 degrees. Also water ran out of the thermostat housing because I had damaged the gasket when I removed the cover to check it out. So plenty of water was flowing.
Is it possible that the water was flowing because the muffs were hooked up and the garden house water pressure was enough to cool the engine?
I had taken the cover off and checked the thermostat for freedom of movement when I was out on the water. It may have been stuck but didn't seem like it.
I'm going to change the thermostat and dunk the boat in the bay an run it at idle to see if it stays cool.
If not then I guess I will need to change the impeller.
But I still find it a little difficult that the impeller can burn up that quickly. Is the clearance between the impeller and the housing that tight?

Water is a lubricant. No water = no lube = friction.

The garden hose is under pressure, maybe 40psi? That will force water in, what lasks there is volume.
