Hi all! Nice to meet you guys. I've been browsing and reading lots of info. Thanks for this website!

So I have been interested in getting a boat for quite some time. I have the vehicle to pull it with and I go out on the water quite often with friends and help them with whatever needs be. I've been out about every other weekend this spring and summer.

I came upon a steal of a deal that I couldn't pass up. I love projects and I'm always looking to rebuild something. So I wound up trading it for a SKS rifle that I have about $200.00 into! He also gave me a folder full of receipts that added up to over $4,100.00 in repairs and maintenance done in 2000. Wow.

It worked out quite well I think. The hull is strong and solid and the motor needs some work. That's the easy part, I work on motors for a living. I've torn it apart already and am rebuilding it from the block up. New Manifolds are on the way. The lower unit oil was clean and seems to rotate freely. I'll keep you guys posted and ask questions when I have them.

Here she is pulling into my driveway Monday night.

The interior imediately after I got it home. A bit dirty but she cleaned up great!

The rear seats are getting reupholstered asap! I want something that the ladies will like to lay on. haha. I'm thinking some crazy pattern is in store.

She has the OMC 800 out drive. Seems hard to find parts, but it was rebuilt in 2000 and only used for 2 years afterwards. The oil was clean so I'm expecting good things.

So as I was cleaning and inspecting her I found that she had a brand new bimini installed before she was parked. The cloth is in amazing shape. There was a $500.00 receipt in the folder for her. ha

Congratulations and welcome to CSR! Not bad for an SKS!

Great first post! We like the pictures! The tall Bud on the swim ladder is a nice touch!

So after all of that I have a question... I've never seen a boat that was neither a bow rider or had a cuddy. This boat is neither. What can I do to get more storage out of the front? It has a small hatch on the bow that I can get into but it seems rather unreasonable to keep the life jackets where people cannot get to them.

Is there a reason that I cannot create a door or hatch in this area to allow access to the front? I don't want to compromise the structural integrity so if I can't or it is ill advised I will not proceed with that plan. Does anyone know if doing this would cause a problem?

Thanks!

Zak

I see no reason why a door could not be put there. One thing to watch though - the lower carpet covered section may actually be a foam filled chamber. At the very least the upper white section could probably be opened up.

I have same boat, I store lifejackets by where your and front passenger foot area's are. you can actually crawl under there and get a peek to survey your plans. I use anchor locker for ropes and anchor. I did cut up old floormats to protect fiberglass. You will want to keep it a semi walk through to get to the bow area. I keep a porta potty for my kids where your planned door area is. Best of luck

Oh I almost forgot, mine has a snap on vinyl hatch/door where your proposed door is. its only about 12x12. I thought that was std.

nice ole boat....I see the Indiana tag and you are on the Ohio. I'm around the Madison area...Heard from a friend thats from Corydon, that they have a river festival down that way around leavonworth? not sure if thats spelled right....you know anything about that? she was wanting us to cruize down there.

Nice boat! Trade for a $200 rifle?? The trailer alone is worth more than that. I love the wheels on the trailer! Very cool!

Thanks everyone for the kind words! I'll be pulling the motor on saturday. I'm going to just rebuild and call it good while I have the time. I'll post pictures of the progress!

Do you have any pics of your boat? I'd love to see it. And thanks for the thought! I've been doing bits and pieces to this girl just about every day. She's going to be a great toy soon enough.

I love these wheels! I knew they were nice so I had to do a bit of research on them.
:smt038Turns out that these wheels are from 1965 Mustang. They are 14x7 American Racing 200s wheels. The reason I know they are off of a mustang is the American Racing Patent Pending stamp located inside the rim. From the research I've done it seems that they were an optional wheel for that year, after 65 the wheels were stamped with a Patent number.

Leavenworth is a town of about 300 people. Quite a small place. They do have quite a few visitors on the weekends due to the scenery around. I would not be surprised if the river festival is pretty popular. It looks like it's in early September this year.

Congrats on the boat. Sounds like you'll have it cleaned up and in the water in no time. I'm in the Cincinnati area area myself so if you're out playing around I'd be willing to meet up for a drink or something. Or if you need a hand dropping that motor back in let me know. Enjoy!

Well I've been at it cleaning her up and I found a box of goodies. I also found a brand new prop. I'll need to inspect it a bit more and see what it's all about. Took the rear seats to a friend today to get them reupholstered. We'll see how long that takes.

Does anyone have any tips on repairing tears in the cover? I think I can do those on my own fairly easily..

Thanks! Who knows what crazy trips I'll be taking and where I'll end up. I'll keep you in mind.

Hey Zak
Check out my profile on Old Skools redo. The fuel tank is in the cuddy on mine and it most likely is on your too. Need to move it to gain a cuddy. I was toying with move my tank to the ski locker using a new tank or 2 - 12 gal tanks on either side of the engine under the rear seats. Even with the tank out there is not a lot of room up there though it would provide some extra storage. The anchor is also stored up there so you'll need to do something with it too.

I tried to upload a couple of pics but says ive exceeded size??? only 100kb. My fuel tank is under floor just infront of engine. If you remove panel by where you were looking to put door. there is a raised floor extending from anchor locker back to walk through area. Also there is a bulkhead about a foot in front of panel, it is the back of anchor locker. you could see it if you crawl under steering wheel with flashlight. it would be possible to cut a hole in panel and cut a hole in bulkhead having aft access to locker. I think it would be better to keep lifejackets under dash and cooler area. I keep 4kid and 6 adult plus 2 throw cushions under there.

My tank sits on bulkhead type structure. Is it possible they moved the tank on yours yet let the bulkhead in place? I'd like to get a picture of your tank location.
As far as the pictures, to gain more you'll need to become a contributor. For 25 bucks a year you gain way more picture space, loose the sidebar adds and gain the general admiration of the rank and file.
Just go to the home page and click on the amount you want to contribute.
BTW looks like I need to reup my contribution.

A couple of buddies came to my shop to help yesterday. We pulled the motor. We couldn't get it out of the boat but its free.

My best friend Alex saw the leaking hydraulic seal on the forklift! He saved the day man!

I have a come-along and we are getting it out today. I hope to have the oil pan off and find out if this motor is good.

Thanks for the tips guys! You all are helping me out and giving me great ideas.

My tank is under the floor. Center of the boat. It is a large aluminum tank. I figured it was in the factory location. I'll take some pictures and post them.

More to come! I'll post pictures of the event soon. Total out of pocket expenses so far $287.00

I have a picture heavy update.

We had a very productive weekend. Got the motor out of the boat and now I have a replacement motor lined up to pick up tomorrow. I'm very disappointed that I can't reuse the motor but I sort of planned on that being an issue. So no worries, it's all part of the plan.

So the weekend started out Friday after I left the office. I went to check out my friends new to him old house boat. He bought a 1969 34ft with a nice running 350 for 3,000.00 slip included.. I think he came out ok in the deal. He likes his ladies a little older. This time she's only 25 years older. haha

Here is the view I'll have next season. I'm slipping in four spots on the right from this.

Anyway so my boat... Work started Saturday at about 12:00 noon. Let's just say I was up late Friday. So here I am backing into my shop so I can kick the A.C. on and not have work in the hot sun with the very high humidity we had all weekend. My friends sure appreciated it I'm sure..

Skip forward a few steps. I didn't take any pictures of removing the sterndrive but it came off smooth and easy. Not a bump in the road. Here is the motor ready to come out. Just making sure the wires are all disconnected.

Here is how we got the motor saturday night. The forklift blew a seal on the lift pump. Boy was that a sketchy feeling. That could have been disaster for this entire project! luckily Alex saw the leak and pointed it out so we could drop the motor and let her rest here for the night.

Here are the guys enjoying a drink and a break after all that work. We called it quits not long after this. And you can see my gas tank in this picture. It's the aluminum tank in the center floor. Is this factory for an 82?

Back at it Sunday at 12:00 noon again. Man these late nights are killing me! Here we are hooked up and out of the boat. Yep she's hanging by that beam, but that beam has held a lot more weight than this little small block.

Lesson learned. Be prepared. Sunday night is not a good night to go out looking for 3" 3/8-16 Grade 8 bolts. Wound up using some eye hooks stacked with washers. haha! Those are getting replaced soon. We didn't get the motor off the hoist until about 10:00 haha

These guys are a couple of the best friends anyone could ask for. I couldn't do half the crazy stuff I like to do without their support!

She's looking good. Could be a lot worse. At this point I am feeling very positive. The crank looked great and minimal surface rust in the bottom of one cylinder when we pulled the oil pan. It had over a gallon of water in the motor but it all looked clean inside. UNTIL Alex pointed out this little crack..

Well that's it for now. I'll have more updates soon. Should be picking up a new short block tomorrow so I'll post pics of updates as they come along. I hope you guys like the pictures. Oh and this is me by the way in case anyone cares!

Nice to meet you guys!
