New England – Points of Interest

Out trip to north will start from NYC, so I thought going all the way to the Ealizabeth Islands or MV would be too far for a single leg (we're vacationing so why push it?). Considering that travellng through the Vineyard sound in the afternoon may not be the best thing to do, I'm planning to make a stop at Watch Hill. This would allow us to travel for about 5hrs (somewhere around 130NM) and enjoy what WH has to offer. Then, in early AM make the run to the MV. Do you guys think it's a good plan? Where would you suggest to get fuel before I head to MV?

In my experience fuel is reasonable on MV but NOT Nantucket - Fuel can be had at Point Judith if you want to stop beforehand - I'm sure some places up the river in watch hill/stonington have diesel too.

Are you suggesting to get fuel at Block?

I'll be on Block on a different trip and want to visit new places this time.

Looking for any info on Kingsman Yacht Center and Hyannis Marina on Cape Cod.. Are they worthy destinations? Thanks

Hyannis is very nice, pool, rest. etc. Never been to Kingman but it is in Falmouth about and hour by boat away. I here it is also nice check website for amenites. If any of you get thru the canal there is gas on the other side that is very cheap for baoters. Last august I paid 4.00
Also boston is very nice if yoiu care to venture that far. PM if you make it and I can offer more help. rob

Do you guys have recommendations for Watch Hill? Is there a mooring or should I just drop a hook and take the dinghy to the town? According to the chart there are Watch Hill Cove and Foster Cove near by. Where would you guys suggest to stay? Anything in town we shouldn't miss? I was thinking about Napatree beach, but looks like it's further away from the town and not as protective for overnight stay.

First and foremost stay in the channel there are shallow and unforgiving spots outside it as you enter you go between a sandbar and a green can - you would swear you had to pass the can to starbord but dont - stay right red returning - the marnas are up the river but you will be closer to watch hill by anchoring behind napatree - it is sheltered quite well and the holding ground is good - after going around the last set of buoys make your approach to the anchorage and get as close as you dare - the biggest nusince here is wakes from passing boats if your too far out - there is not a lot to see or do in watch hill and they typically roll up the carpet (close everything) really early - take a walk by the carousell and out to watch hill light - for dinner i like the skippers dock in stonington borough ( an upscale cleat and eat) if you have a center console dinghy its an easy ride. Pm me if you need more info

Cod......I keep my boat at Hyannis.......A great marina and area, but why hyannis and not t he islands.....Kingman is nice and has the chartroom, but I ask again......Why......If it is just a one night stay onto your destination, they are great....tell us more about your trip and we can help out more...

Rob,
Thanks for the input.......

John,

I plan on going to the islands stopping in Vinyard Haven, Edgartown, and Nantucket... I've done the islands many times and just looking to see if there are any other ports that I've been missing and just looking to mix it up from our typical routine.....

Thanks guys,

Steve

Is "Spanky's" still on the other side of the harbor? Near the Hyline docks? We were there a few years back and my wife thought she knew good seafood till we went there. I never saw her head come out of that bucket of seafood. She didn't want me to take her to "Anthony's" or "Chillingsworth".

Alex, you've got lots of "ports of call" here, so I won't belabor those. But one thing that is an unforgettable must for us is to visit Monomoy Island. If you don't know, its a vacant refuge only accessible by boat. Still has an old station on the southern tip, too. You can approach in the shallows from the West side, drop anchor, and tender to shore. If you like fantastic dunes, wildlife and sealife, it won't dissapoint. You'll see the seals on the eastern shore as you walk the beach, maybe even a great white feeding on them, too. Horshoe crabs abound. Bring a picnic on shore with you, as well.

I used to venture out there in my youth on a 13' whaler and it hasn't changed in 35 years. Every time I return I'm amazed at this gem. I posted some instructions for approach here: http://clubsearay.com/showthread.php/28517-Top-5-anchorages?p=328315#post328315

Thanks for great tip, Chuck. I didn't know about this place. It sounds very cool, I can only imagine the site of wild seals. "maybe even a great white feeding on them" - I guess it's not a good swimming spot.

Looking at the map, I think I'll need to do at least a week of vacation in Cape Cod and surrounding area.

Oh, you just reminded me about whale watching. Is it a good idea to follow the whale watching charter boat or should we just go on it?

I would add in Cuttyhunk and Menemsha.....Hyannis Marina (http://hyannismarina.com/) is a nice stop with a restaurants and bars right there at the marina.....There is also a great beach called egg island which is only exposed at high tide.......Here are my favorite 5 anchorages.... http://cruisingwetpaint.blogspot.com/2010/04/top-5-anchorages-on-cape-cod.html

John,

Thanks so much!!.... Exactly what I'm looking for.... as I love to drop the hook in new places, and those spots look amazing....

Do you guys recall if there's a big difference (just and AVG) in fuel prices between MV (Vineyard Haven) and places on CT side like Mystic, Point Judith? I'm just thinking if it's worth spending time to go other places or should I just fuel up at VH?

The outer shore (east side) get's deep fast and is where the seals and feeding sharks are, don't swim there. But a must see and must walk beach. The inner shore (west side) is shallow, calm and fine for swimming and crabbing. Regarding whale watching, if you follow them stay well away, the captains don't like it. Nothing wrong with hitchen' a ride though, sit back and be a spectator, besides, you'll get a lot of info over the speaker from the crew that you wouldn't otherwise know.

Cheers,
