My boat project

While my boat is in the shop I think I will have one of these bad boys installed. That is me in the turret.

Hi everyone. Just letting you know that I had the heads (valves) checked and they were not the problem. The firing order is fine and all cylinders are firing. So we appear to be looking at a much bigger problem. So instead of spending the money to take it all apart and start searching for the problem, I decided to not mess with it at all and just put a new rebuilt one in. The 302 that I have right now has 351 heads on it. I found out that it was pretty common on the older (1970s) ford 302s to have a 351 firing system for more power without using much more fuel. So I am having it built with 351 heads and cam. I should be a couple of weeks, so when I get it I will let you know.

Did you look at the ignition?

Being that old, I would look towards that versus the mechanical end of the motor for a misfire.

Great thread. Very nice work Joe. There are not very many skilled woodcrafters left in the world. That is indeed a lost art. I really like the cooler setup especially the way it sits off the deck when in the cabinet. That airflow will save you a lot of headaches down the road.

well, thats a shame about your motor. Keep up the good fight, someday you will get to take her out and enjoy her! Though, I do think I have figured out the root of your problem...you have a FORD in your boat....LOL..J/K:grin:

I would have to agree on the Ford problem I had a 78 25' Formula that the PO just had the FORD 351 redone, the problem I had was with the rocker assembly bending and breaking rocker arms. I don't think they hold up very well under high torque needs of a heavy boat but then I am partial to Chevy small blocks much easier to work on and easier to get the power out of. Keep plugging away you will get there.

Hi everyone. I have finally got my new engine in the shop. It was being built in California and they had some really bad weather down there in the last few months which slowed
production, but it is finally here. Quick recap. It is a Ford 302 with a 351 firing system. We are in the process of installing the rest of the parts. We should be putting it all back
together in the boat in the next couple of days. Here are some pics. I will keep you all updated as we progress.DSCN4194.JPG DSCN4197.JPG

With the 351 heads and if you have a moderately modified cam you may want to step to a 650 or 700. If you running out of WOT rpm that may be the issue. If not then let her ride.

I will definitely look into that OldSkool. While we had the valve covers off I decided to play on the blue color of the block.
I do not know why they made it blue but it looks ok I guess. We will hopefully have it all back together before the weekend.
