My boat project

Best of LUCK! Should be a very rewarding trip for all of the hard work you put in!

Good Luck Joe!

It looks like a mile stone for me too. The glass work will be pretty much completed on my rig this weekend. Then, it's time to reassemble everything.

Have a safe shake down cruise!

Hi everyone. So we took the boat out today. It did not go as well as I had hoped, but we still had a good time. Everything worked well except when we gave it some gas. The carb would backfire and we would not get any speed. I think the timing is off and possibly the timing chain is loose. I will bring it back on Monday and have it checked out. Here are some pics.

At least you made it back in one piece!

I'm suprised your mechanic didn't fire her up while the engine was out of the boat, all ya need is a hose, battery, and jumpers for the M/E harness, makes it real easy to set all the base timing, and idle adjusments screws on the carb before dropping her in.

Ah well, keep up the good work!

Check the firing order, may have a wire crossed in the cap.

Hey Joe,

This pics turned out good. The boat sure looks good in the water. Have you heard back from the mechanics yet about the timing chain? Let me know when you plan wanna take her out again.

I'd guess it is the timing--if the distributor was out, it may have gone back in 1 tooth off which will make it run very poorly, no get up and go. Also as Scorpio suggested check your plug wires. With respect to the timing chain being loose, there is no tensioner in there, just the sprocket on the cam and on the crank, and provided they were tight and in like new condition and the chain was too, those shouldn't be the issue.

Hi everyone. Here is a quick update. I had the timing checked and the plug wires and everything was good, but
everytime we put a load on the drive we would get the backfire and no thrust. We had the cylinders pressure
tested and they checked out ok as well. We decided that
the valves must not be seating right, so we removed them
and are having them tested. From the pics you can see that a couple of them do look pitted so that might be the problem. I will let you know. See ya.

UMMMM....based on what you are saying, I would look more into ignition componets than the internals of the engine. If you have good compression...and all the valve seats, and springs look ok...I would aim for that. Has the mechanic double checked the CAM? that would cause another major timing issue. In fact, if I'm not mistaken, the sprockets have shear pins under them. If one let loose, your sprocket would no longer be be in the correct position, and even though you are mathcing the points for the main sprocket to the cam, it would be off.

I agree with BlewByYou88, this doesn't sound like an internal problem to the engine.

Did you notice that on the picture of the head, every other exhaust valve has the correct brownish color? The others are black, and I can't tell if it is shiny black (oil) or sooty black (rich fuel). My guess would be soot, and you have a spark or fuel problem that is not common to every cylinder. Is the coloring the same way on the other head?

I wouldn't say he is running rich, it almost looks like 2 cylinders aren't even firing at all. The ones that are black would indicate that he has fuel going in without any combustion occuring. The two that look light brown would be normal.

Did they do a cylinder drop test? Where you pull one plug at a time to see if the engine running characteristics change. If no change then no fuel, or no spark. Orrrr the cylinders are firing on the exhaust stroke. That would be if he has spark and still no change in running characteristics.

If tthat engine is an original 1973 you need to chance the timing chain no matter how mwny hours are on it. Ford in the 70s put a plastic coating over the cam sprocket. Thios would crack and make the chain loose. Then jump time. I would have checked the timing before pulling the heads. I'm in wyoming now. I'll try to post some pics of that plactic timing sprocket. Its still in the trash in my Wisconsin shop.

Joe, if I let my girlfriend look at your thread she won't let me get any truckin done. Ill be in the shop on my boat. Also same year and make. Mine is a weekender.

Excess fuel in the cylinder will look the same either way, wether it is from too much fuel or a weak spark/no spark, but we are thinking the same. It doesn't look like it is burning oil though.

I agree. If the cylinder walls look good, probably just clean up the valve seats and check the guides. Replace the timing stuff and see if she runs.

Thanks for the posts guys. Tomorrow I will take a look at it and see what we should do. My wife and I went to Bremerton over the weekend. The weather was awesome and there were alot of nice boats out. We also went on the destroyer. The engines on that thing were bigger than my boat.
