Hi everyone. Here is another quick update. While waiting for my tank to come I have stripped, sanded, prepped and epoxied the fuel tank and enginge compartments. I started at ten and it is now almost midnight. Time disappears when you are having fun. Here are some pics.

Thanks,
Joe

WOW.....:thumbsup::thumbsup:

Keep it up! Looks great!

I see at least one CSR member is actually working on his boat instead of posting useless, meaningless political statements........:grin:

What you said.:thumbsup: Sure can tell cabin fever is setting in. I'm even more combative than usual.

I like Joe, he is a real enthusiast and he is working overnight on his Sea Ray with the wider smile I ever saw on the face of a boat owner!

While the engine is out I am having it cleaned up a bit. Someone had sprayed it all black and it was looking a little worn-out. I had the valve covers stripped and shined, I am getting rid of the yellow cables, and I have a new edelbrock carb on the way.

Hi Joe,

My SeaRay was parked next to yours at Dagmars for the last couple of years, (I just moved to covered storage in Sept.). I purchased my boat 2 years ago only to find serious structural rot problems after the sale.

It took me about 8 months of rebuilding but now it is better than new, and multiple times cheaper than buying new.

Glad to see that boat getting the love it needs.

Nice project boat Joe & looks like your enjoying working on it.

Cant wait to see you turn it into the fishing machine it can be.

Great work do far.

Did you make that fuel transfer dolly thing? Neat idea, I like it.

I had the metal fuel tank on our 190 boiled out and lined with epoxy... but that was several years ago and haven't gotten it back together yet...

Sure would be a better feeling knowing you had a new one, but if the old one checks out and is relined and sealed you should be good for a while longer.

just curious, how much crude was in the bottom of the tank? Had it run any ethanol do you know?

And lastly, not being familiar with the great north west, how can you be wearing short sleeves in December?

Joe,

Great job on your project so far! I was just about to ask what your plans for the 302 were, then your last post answered that. While it is out, have you done a compression check? Also check the rear main seal as the 302s are notorious for those aging/failing and then leaking like crazy. I had to do that with a '72 302 in a vehicle and before pulling the engine, I had discovered that it is a widespread characteristic of that engine....even up into the mid 90's. With respect to the plug wires, make sure you get a marine application approved set, with the largest diameter conductor (8 to 9 mm) for good hot spark.

A good coating for the exterior of that metal fuel tank is POR 15. It doesn't need to be sanded down to bare shiney metal either, in fact that is not recommended, just knock off the rough stuff and scuff it up real good --POR 15 really sticks to the rusty metal, and if you do end up trying it, do not get it on anything as it will not come off....hands included, it has to wear off of them. Good luck and keep posting, enjoying the progress. I love seeing these older boats used for fishing--I use mine as much for fishing as I do for pleasure cruising/weekend camping.

Hi everyone. Thanks for the posts. You bet CAGE RATTLER.
This will be one lean, mean fishing machine. I do alot of river fishing but I can't wait to get out to the open sea.

The fuel pump is not mine KRB64. The boat shop that helped me remove the engine and that is doing the mechanic work lent me that. It is a dolly with filter, fuel pump and battery.
I also thought it was quite good. I definitely want a new tank, and I several quotes to make a one, but my budget right now is telling me to wait several months or so. When I flushed this tank there was actually very little crude or debris of any kind, and when I remove the sender and looked insinde it was very smooth. I had it lined anyway. I do not know whether ethanol had been used or not. The weather up here is usually cold and wet in the fall and winter months, you just get used to it, and besides, I am very excited and I do not have a shop right now so I work on it whenever I can.

Hi WILLNLORI. Before I bought this boat I knew absolutely nothing about how an engine worked, and I still know very little. My technician, however, is very familier with these Ford 302s and he said the same thing about the seal. So we replaced it and he did a complete inspection of all other seals, valves and what not. I know we replaced several other items but I do not remember what they were. I will have to look at the work order. I will also double check the plug wires. Concerning the tank, my brother works for a sign manufacturing company and does alot with steel. We took the tank and sanded it but were not able to make it perfectly smooth. He had a product designed for this type of application but I do not know its name. I will check to see if it is the same product or something comparable.

Again thanks for the posts everyone. I will be posting more info and pics tomorrow.

See ya later:smt001

Hi guys. Finally getting the boat back in the shop. Got the fuel tank back in. While it is the shop I am going to do several other little projects. I am going to strip and reseal the windows and put in a new hatch cover.

See ya:thumbsup:

searayjoe, you are an inspiration to us old timers. It's truly nice to see a young person show this much appreciation to the classics. No matter what boat you go to from here you will always remember the hard work you did not this one and it will always be your favorite.
I can tell you this from experience.
