Anybody ever dock a the Harbor at Munising in the UP? Wondering the pros and cons about it. Is it a flat harbor or is the boat going to rock all day and night?

Dan

Yep - that is actually our home port and we keep our 270DA at the city marina seasonally.
Located within Munising Bay the harbor is usually calm. Winds through the summer are generally off-shore and very little boat traffic.
Grand Island creates protection for the bay from anything Lake Superior may kick-up which is also rare in the summer.
The only rocking is with the occasional tour boat captain that pushes at speed closer to the pier than he should be.
Even then it's not bad. It's calm, maybe not a sheet of glass but calm.
If your planning a trip up here drop me a message and I'll help however I can with the area and suggestions.

I just made the reservantions today for July 7-11 at the Munising habor. I'll see you up there hopefully. Warning I have two little kids 4 and 6 that go crazy.

Dan

Great

Not that there are many boats, only 4 seasonal so far this year, but we are in the last slip at the end of the inside pier.
I'd ask Dawn, the Harbor Master, for an inside transient slip as close to the end as possible. It's just nicer than mooring off the side of the dock with fenders.

Have a safe trip up !

Dan,

When you visit Munising take the time to tie up like you would for tidal changes.
Barometric pressure changes as fronts pass across Lake Superior occasionally cause what is called a "seiche" (French "to sway back and forth"). Here in Munising Bay the water can drop and rise 2 feet in about an hours time. Water is real deep all around here so it is not something you need to worry too much about while traveling, just mooring.

We had rain travel through today and while down at the boat this evening I watched a larger seiche with an almost 3 foot drop and return over a 2 hour period.
It reminded me that I should share this for your visit - just in case.

The lake levels are still down but the seiche effect has really been active and extreme this year catching me off guard.
Our inflatable is kept under the dock behind the boat with 3 feet of clearance above the outboard.
Took it out for a little spin today and dang - I noticed the top has scratches and green paint on it from bouncing off the bottom side of the dock.
It's been crazy this year with seemingly constant seiches, we usually only see them a few times through the summer and not nearly this extreme.

Wanted to see you before we left, but it didn't happen. Could have exchange idea's or what ever. You probably chould have play with the Lowrance HDS unit and the Navonice's maps more. The danm thing did have some of the rebooting issure this week, pissed me off.
We had a great time with great weather. The north side of the island is wonderful. Went there two time's. My friend rented a pontoon for the whole day and run the crap out of it. Went to the north side of the island, trout bay and chappel rock beaches with them. what a great time. We also went to East Jorden and met up with some more old freinds From my home town. We went from Ironton to Beaver Island Satureday after seeing the Boyne Thunder poker run starte out.

Dan,
I too wanted to catch up before you left but that work thing got in the way.
Friends from Ontario were visiting for the previous 4th of July week so I had to catch up on things.
We are glad you and the family had a great time, safe travels and enjoyed the area - it sounds like you covered a lot of ground (or should I say water) between here and Lake Michigan.
You even had a nice bonus here with the tall ship Niagara visiting for a few days on her way to Marquette.

It was really nice to meet you and the family in person - enjoy the rest of the boating season and if your ever back in town drop me a line.

Keith

Kieth, shot me a pm of you email address. I'll send you my sceen shots of the ship wreaks I took with the Lowrance unit.

Dan

Thanks for posting them - pretty cool.
Looks like there will be a bit of a learning curve to get the clearest images once you find a structure.
Can't wait to get the system and install it.

Yep. I chould have done a better job by driving over it the right way. I have a few more, That album is full. I see it down sized the images also. Can't see the detail real well.
