Month Long Cruise PCB - Key West - 340

We brought eggs - eggs and chicken. Not counting the chicken before the eggs turn into chicken, or is it the other way around?

So, what are we going to look at now?
Blue lights in clearer water
Banyon tree in Venice
Bike ride around town with small houses, nice canals, and big boats
Shelli, our boat, and an older Grand Banks 42
The jetty outbound at Venice
Same, looking back
How to chill and drive

showing those blue lights in this thread is like a very hot Victoria's Secret model showing a hairy mole on her arm pit.

What are those little containers between the helm seats? I wish I could steer the boat with my feet. It is still too tight to do that unfortunately...project # 24.

The night before last, the snook were all around our boat. I got one to bite on a small, live crab, but he didn't take the hook. In addition to snook video, here are the cruising videos from yesterday:

John:

Looks like you are having the trip of a lifetime!

Do plan to do any diving in the Keys?

Nice photo's and trip you are on. Have fun and remember in boating, boat stands for

LOL! so what do you figure you fuel usage will be for round trip? 1500 gallons?

Now to a few unrelated questions. I am seriously considering doing my front isinglass in Makrolon polycarbonate, and possibly the two side sections. There is a place just a block from my marina here, the Boatswain Locker (around $95.00 per linear foot to make), so I am figuring for the three center sections at least a bit a $1,000.00 to make the three sections.

Do you know the thickness of you Makrolon front and side isinglass sections?

Does the center section in you windshield section flex enough to allow a slight bend so you can snap it to the arch. My current isinglass touches the top of the side portion of the helm station unless I flex it a bit (bow it) to have it snap to the arch.

On the two side sections, not the windshield sides, but the section which is immediately to your right shoulder as you stand at the helm. Mine currently has u-zips in them which I know you cannot do with Makrolon. I know you have your two sides in Makrolon, if you did it over again would you do these two sections again in Makrolon, or leave them as acrylic with u-zips for ventilation?

Does just opening the front section and securing to the arch allow enough ventilation for you?

Thanks

Howard

The pics are great! What a great trip too.:thumbsup:

It looks like at most of the resorts you are practically alone? But the marinas look full, is this the case?

Makrolon - slightly flex, don't know thickness, and good ventilation on center panel.

Strataglass - 30mm

Planned for $6500 gas

Brought Dive gear. Gotta go!

Hey John and Shelli!. So far it seems to be an uneventful trip. Y'all are the envy of the "Shell Island Bunch" for sure. You guys make us proud to be your friends and to be an electronic part of your trip. Aren't electrons cool? Hope all goes smoothly and look forward to your next post.

John, Your trip looks really cool. I saw your post last night at work. I just moved our boat from Tarpon Springs to Homestead at Black Point Marina. My wife and I flew home to Atlanta so I could work for 3 days (night shift) then will be back down on Saturday to start the trip on Sunday. It has been an adventure already. We will be going down the bayside of the Keys on the way down and the Atlantic side on the way back. Hope to see you down there. What days are you planning to go to Fort Jefferson? We've been there before on the ferry and it's awsome. I would be willing to go as a buddy boat if it works out. It's a long way out there but worth the trip. Have fun and be safe.

WE ARE HERE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We cruised under 7 mile bridge today at about 2:45. We have chosen to go the South route for now - last minute decision. The North side is FULL of weeds. We anchored, took care of boat business, then blew the dinghy up and headed back South for some great snorkeling between Bahia Honda key and the next little spit to the South. Then, we headed out South for a look at the wild life. We spooked up a shark that was sunning on the surface, then we filmed some dolphins. We took the dinghy to shore to explore the little marina - nice. Then, we came back to the boat, started the genny, and pulled a couple of cold ones off ice.

Do I need to start a new thread for our time in the Keys?

BTW, Marinas are about 1/2 full and the resorts are about the same, or no one around. It is South Fl in June - very slow, sleepy, hot, and little wind. I didn't have a choice which time of year to do this trip, but, at least we should have a good ride West.

We left Marco Island Yacht Club at about 1100, then turned SouthEast up through the river and around Marco Island. We passed a very quant town called Goodland - very patriotic folks there. When we came out of the river, we were in open, shallow water. Charts all read 1'. Local sailboater told us there would be a min of 5' in all directions. We headed directly toward 7-mile bridge, and never saw less than 7'.

We logged 108 SM today. Don't know the gas, but betting .75mpg. If you want to go our route, be ready for 665 miles, and you'll need about 740 gallons.

Tomorrow, we're going to continue to wing it, but I would bet on seeing us in Newfound Harbour tomorrow evening, then Key West the next night. Where's the best diving around here? Our snorkeling revealed quite a bit of coral, though not very colorful. We are in a heavily traveled area right now.

I would love to have a boat buddy for the leg to the Dry Tortugas. I'm planning on leaving on the 15th, weather permitting. We'll have to cruise at 26 mph for fuel, and we plan to stay 2 or 3 nights.
