Disappearing swim ladder mounting nuts!
I took my swim ladder off a few weeks ago to repaint and one of today's chores was to reinstall. Imagine my surprise when I discovered the bolts had no nuts! Because the screws came out with no problem, I expected the nuts were captive, apparently a mistake. Now I have to figure out how to get nuts on the underside of the swim platform. I can access (if you want to call it that) the underside from the bilge, but not enough to get a hand back to the mounting holes. Here's how I'm thinking about the fix: I will make a brace from a piece of 1/4" aluminum, drill holes using a ladder mount as a template and super glue locknuts onto the brace. I'll either make the brace long enough to be able to hold it in place while the Captain starts the screws, or make a holder from a pair of vice grips and something else using duct tape and bailing twine. Any suggestions?

You should be able to hold the nuts and washers with long pliers.

Did anyone ever figure out a way to keep all the rain water from coming in the side engine vents? I know there was some talk of waterproof material that allowed air to go through and there was some talk about redesigning it with stainless steel that did a better job of covering the area.

Thanks!

Looking at installing a second Bimini for camper encloser.Right now I have the slant back top.Im needing the measurement to mount rear Bimini. Thanks

I still have my dimensions sheet from Great Lakes Tops on the boat. I just did the conversion from the slant to the full camper last year. I will be at my boat this week and I will try my best to remember to bring it back or post the measurements. Did you order a new set or got the poles salvage? Either way Great Lakes Tops should send you the measurements even if you only get the canvas from them. Also, I will add one perhaps important change you are about to make, I have found that once you convert to the full camper, that a Magma Grill (which I love)....the new poles will interfere with the grill being mounted on a pole holder mount. This may or may not affect you depending on how you use your boat, but I personally love my grill. I have found that it isn't a deal breaker for me since I simply have to disconnect one pole from the bimini and temporarily secure it while I grill.

I think I got rid of my dimension sheet from Great Lakes Boat Tops. I did search for it but could not find it....I then got side-tracked fixing a temp sender (that is starting to make me mad) anyway. I am going back to the boat tomorrow and can give you hard dimensions from the base of the rise of the gunwales if that makes sense. I'm pretty sure that is where Great Lakes based their dimension. Just let me know if that will work. I need to renew my sponsorship to CSR to make pic posting easier but I've had a bad year here so it may be text only.

Here are the dimensions for all of the bimini frame mounts. Hope this helps. bimini frame dimensions.jpg

Where have you all placed the oil and garbage placards? My boat was never in Coast Guard waters and I need to put these somewhere on the boat because some fool legislator thought I needed to do this so I would know I can't dump oil and garbage.

Thanks!

I have the factory ones on the bottom of my bilge deck plates. Yours may be different. I put new decals on the cabinet door so I did not need to pull the deck plates for the inspection. MM

Thanks for the idea MM. I have the factory oil discharge placard on the underside of my Starboard engine hatch as well but no garbage or waste placard. I bought the full package of "stickers" from West when I bought the boat but didn't place them until this past weekend. I put the garbage and waste stickers on the inside of the starboard cabinet door. I suppose I'll put the other oil discharge sticker on the inside of my port cabinet door (by the battery switches) just to avoid having to pull an engine hatch for an inspection. Although, doesn't the letter of the law say "in plain view"? Which is the only reason I hadn't placed mine. But, in hindsight, isn't "plain view" very subjective?....lol

I would really like to see pictures of your windlass install. I assume you had to replace the anchor locker door with something substantial to support the windlass.
Hi Dave,

I just purchased a 1996 270 DA and have a questions about the anchor davit. The anchor that came with the boat doesn't fit. Possibly the past owner(s) lost the original anchor? We have an bow pulpit with two roller inside and stainless steel wing type davit underneath. No windlass. What brand, weight, and style anchor best works with that arrangement?

Thanks,

Kay

Hi Kay, Welcome aboard! Dave is not here often, the last time he was here was in early March, so it is unlikely he will see your post.

The anchor rollers use the "Delta Fast Set" Mine is the 22 lbs. galvanized version. As the anchor comes up it will roll over to the proper direction and follow the rode into the roller. You then snug it up and it rides snugly in the roller. Some owners use a Fortress style for their areas but the Delta is it what was originally on the boat.

You are lucky to get the rollers, mine never had them and they cost near $700 to get now. You also may be interested in the windlass threads for your boat,

Hoping someone might have some suggestions. I am having an electrical problem. I have power at the battery and the DC distribution. I do not have DC power at the helm. I still have power to start the boat. I do not see any breakers tripped. I do not think that power is getting to the breaker panel at the helm but can not find a place to check between the DC distribution panel and the hel fuse panel. The only 12v items working are the ignition and the builder pump. Any ideas? Thanks

I went back and checked and do did not have any breakers on the port side. It appears my wiring goes from the DC distribution on the port side across the forward part of the the engine room and up the starboard side by the helm seat to the control station. I am not able to find the point where it breaks out to the back of the helm fuse panel. I am not sure if mine is different as I do not have the generator option.
