I’m sure this falls into nothing to worry about category but I’ll ask anyways as we're putting an MMSI list together. I registered the radio via Boat US to receive an MMSI. I think this makes it illegal for use outside of the US as it’s not an ITU registration. The question is that if you use the radio W/O the MMSI functionality in the Bahamas is it legal? Or, does anyone even care?

I couldn't find clarity via search. Anyone know?
Thanks.

Technically you are required to have an FCC license to transmit once in international waters. I too got my MMSI number from Boat US or Seatow and keyed in the MMSI into my radio.

A year or so ago I put up the $100 or more and got the FCC license. They are required to issue a new MMSI.

Here is the problem for both of us. You technically do not have an FCC license. I have an FCC license, but cannot key in my "FCC MMSI" number as my radio will not allow it to be changed without sending it back to Raymarine.

I am not sure what the penalty is, but I have never heard of anyone getting in trouble for transmitting without the FCC license.

Ken

As Gary said, how is a US government agency the FCC going to enforce a US law outside of the US????

as posted on the fcc.gov website.......

Radio Equipment You May Use

You do not need a license to use marine VHF radios, any type of EPIRB, any type of radar, GPS or LORAN receivers, depth finders, CB radio, or amateur radio (an amateur license is required). Ships that use MF/HF single side-band radio, satellite communications, or telegraphy must continue to be licensed by the FCC.
Radios with Digital Selective Calling (DSC) Capability
If you have a marine radio with DSC capability, you must obtain a nine-digit maritime mobile service identity (MMSI) number and have it programmed into the unit before you transmit. Each vessel needs only one MMSI number. Prior to obtaining an MMSI number, you will be asked to provide certain information about your ship. It is important that you obtain an MMSI number because the U.S. Coast Guard uses this information to help speed search and rescue operations.
If your vessel requires licensing by the FCC you will obtain an MMSI number during the application/licensing process when you file FCC Forms 159 and 605 with the FCC.
If your vessel does not require a license you may obtain an MMSI by contacting either BoatUS, Sea Tow Service International, Inc., Shine Micro, or United States Power Squadrons. The contact information is contained in the Public Notice (pdf) announcing agreements with and the procedures for private entities to apply to issue MMSIs.
If your vessel requires licensing by the FCC after you have obtained an MMSI number from BoatUS, Sea Tow Service, Shine Micro, Inc., or United States Power Squadrons, that MMSI number cannot be used during the application/licensing process when you file FCC Forms 159 and 605 with the FCC. MMSI numbers issued by other authorized entities are valid only for ship stations that do not have FCC-issued licenses. Since the ULS will not accept the MMSI that was issued by another entity, you should not enter anything on FCC Form 605, Schedule B. Leave the field blank and the FCC will issue you a new MMSI number.

I hope the seas continue to be as they were this weekend. I made a run from Ft Lauderdale to Boca Raton on Saturday then a return trip Sunday afternoon. It was very calm and I was able to make good time.

Ray

OK folks, we basically have this week and the weekend to prepare for the trip. Next week will fly by and before you know it, we'll be leaving. Ken and Jack have even less time to prepare.

I'll be emailing an outline of ideas and suggestions we can use to organize the trip (Captains meeting). I'll try to get that out today so everyone can respond back this week.

Hey, what can we call our group for this trip????? Everyone write in a suggestion and the winner gets one of Cathie's famous Pina Coladas !!!!!!!

:smt038THE WAIT IS NOW OFFICIALLY OVER:smt038

Randy

As I remember things that are of interest to the group, I'll post them. Ray and Chad - please do the same so everyone will be on the same page.

1 - there is a pump out station at the marina but you will have to move your boat to get to it. It is on the fuel dock. we will discharge on the way over.
2 - there are 2 places for fuel in Lucaya, one at our marina and another about a mile away (Grand Bahama Yacht Club).

more later

Randy

I just called PLM - they have reservations for only 5 boats on Wednesday 5/20. That number jumps up to 24 on Thursday (5 of those additional 19 are our group. She said that the sooner we get there, the better chance we'll have of getting a slip on C Dock. On Friday, about 70 boats are coming in from Marine Max.

More later!

Randy

Must be Memorial day weekend coming up as fuel is starting to rise. PLM quoted $2.79 per gallon for diesel. I think I'll tow a tanker as I get for under $2.00 up here in Tarpon.
Jack

Get enough fuel for me too!!!! Actually, that is probably the best price in the Islands. Most of the time, it is 1.5 times what it is here.

Jack,

Is it easy to siphon fuel out of Ship O Fools? I'll bring a hose.

Hey guys, $2.79 is almost $3.00 per gallon cheaper than we paid in Key West at the peak.

Ken

Yeah Ken, I remember paying $6 per gallon last year in Bimini and taking on 150 gallons of gas.....arghhhhhhhhhh. Thought my credit card was going to have a seizure.

The things that interest me personally, to do as a group:
Cave Bar
Jeep Tours
can you say Kalik Gold. Oh that's right, no planning required there.
We should probably have a group BBQ on the dock
Snorkeling would be fun

Let's just not get into too much advance planning, it is the Bahamas mon!

As an aside, Randy and I took a look at each boats route this weekend and we will all be converging. It appears to me that we should have visual after about 2-2 1/2 hours assuming we leave at close to the same time. The difference between the longest and shortest route was less than 15 miles.

Ray

Hi Ray - good points! I'll be addressing the routes and group activities in my email later tonight.

All captains....... please check their emails and reply with any suggestions or corrections.

Randy
