Raining already today, maybe it will get it over with so you can boat over this evening.

rain isn't my concern; my problem is work is starting to pile on. this could ruin my day.

yeah i though about calling the theard "meaningless tampa bay chatter" but it's not really meaningless to us i guess.

just got back from the hurricane prep class. most of the stuff was basic but a couple of tid bits like the duck tape around the cockpit cover sounds like a good Idea.

Yea the duct tape was a good idea. Everything else seemed like common sense.

Only thing I need to figure out is where I keep the boat if that's a flood zone and which one and if it would better to leave it or tow it home where it would have to sit in the street. might be able to get it in the driveway but then no room for the truck..

Also was nice to meet you tphinney sorry I didn't tell you by, I was up in the Service Manager's face who said they would call me tomorrow about my boat.

tphinney and I snuck outside and found my boat although dirty on the outside it looked complete.

for real if they dont clean your boat.. tell them to shove it.. they gave my boat back filthy.. they are the worst with being clean.. i literally got back my boat with greese foot prints all over the brand new seats.. and dirty hand prints all over.. i was very pissed.

You know morpheus your not aloud to leave your truck in the driveway overnight don't you. I have a truck as well and I have an inch to spare in my garage. We are actually in St Andrews in the Eagles.

:smt018 Don't get me started on that one.

During a hurricane you know they can just stick it

I'm in Windsor Park, I'm actually the VP of the Windsor Park board only because no one else would do it. I don't know if it's the same for your board but the only people that show up to our meetings are the people on the board unless your wanting to raise the hoa fee then everyone shows up to say no. Everyone complains but no one comes to meetings to voice their opinion.

Anyways the truck issue is retarded. I told them my truck (Nissan Titan Crew Cab LE fully loaded with EVERYTHING) was nicer and cost more money they their stupid lexus/bmw whatever and asked what the difference between a SUT and a Truck (I believe avalanches or something that's cosidered an SUT is allowed) and they responded that that anything with a bed is a truck. So a El Camino is a truck and they said no but I said it has a bed and that was the last time they (Masters HOA) would respond to me.

Now all certified letters to them go unanswered.

Anyways I'm in the same situation with my truck. Bumper against front wall for the garage door to close, if the hitch is on it forget closing the door. Good thing those are removable.

Also what gets me is how much money the masters hoa has spent on legal fees over the truck issue. There are better things to spend the money on. :smt013

See what you've done now

I'm curious - what exactly will duct tape around the cockpit cover accomplish when subjected to 100+ mph winds and rain blowing at the same speed? I don't think that tape, duct or otherwise, will last more than 5-10 minutes before getting ripped off.

Right or wrong, I have always removed all of the canvas, since it is only designed to handle 60-70 mph winds. If the cockpit is self-bailing then you can secure the boat in the water. If it drains into the bilge, you really cannot leave it in the water.

If you can secure it on land, that is the best bet. The problem is securing the trailer so that it does not blow over. Based on the results from previous storms, securing it to well set anchors seems to work the best. You can then leave your drain plug out so that it does not flood. This assumes that you cannot get it inside your garage.

If that is not possible, all you can do is weight it down, for example, with sandbags, and hope for the best. Having it fall over on land is usually better than having it get submerged.

Boat US insurance publishes some decent tips based on the claims results from the hurricanes over the last decade. I am not sure how to get their info, but I imagine that you can ask Caroline over on their board.

They main thing is that you have to have a plan to execute when needed. There is rarely enough time to make it up as you go, since you also have to secure your house. I start my preparations if it looks like the storm will be anywhere near me 5 days out. That way, I don't have to worry about it.

I've been lucky. Charlie in 04 missed my boat by 25 miles, and the house by about the same. Had it come ashore at Venice instead of Cayo Costa it would have managed to hit both.

I disagree with this. Nascar uses tape all the time and they are going in excess of 100+ mph. You can get different types of duct tape.

On the duct tape issue, there are many different types of duct tape. i know our boys over seas use duct tape to temporarly patch bullet holes in air planes until they can get the replacement parts.

some of the high end stuff is rated in excess of 100mph+ force. So the comment form captain Harry was to ducktape around hatchs and around the seams of your cockpit cover to help keep the snaps from giving and to create a water tight seal. Also put ducktape over your engine vents. the whole plan being to keep as much water out of the boat as possible so that the batteries and the bilge pump will out last the rain from the storm.

If you are like most folks and keep you boat on a lift or in the water. you only option is to keep the water out of the boat so that is does not sink or crush the lift from the extra weight of the water in the boat. beyond that you pray for a small tidal surge.

Morpheus;

on the whole hoa thing i would bring the trailer home and tell them to sue me. I hate HOA's, been there done that, it's unamerican. our HOA bylaws expired sometime in the mid 70's and no one in the community where I live wants any thing to do with HOA's.

in you case I would bring the boat home one day, put the trailer in the driveway where it would go during a hurricane event. mark 4 spots on the drive way for anchors. then use a hammer drill to drill through the drive way. then put in 1 to 2' threaded bolts with concerte epoxy to secrue tie downs. I would get the recessed ones you see in the floors of motorcycle trailers.

this way the tie downs are in the drive way; but not in the way or a hazzard to anyone. then when the strom comes you back the trailer into the spot and strap the trailer to the driveway.

your neigbhors will give you grife until your the only one who can leave after a storm to go get water and groceries because you have you're boat at the house.

Hmm I like that Idea :smt038 Your in Zone A I was looking at a map of your area we might need to look there for a new home. Although the channel out looks like it gets really shallow like it needs to be dreged out again based on the satalite images I looked at.

there's been a 3 year study done by the county and they will eventually dreg the whole cannal system.

as for getting in and out of channel A, as long as your on plane with your drive trimed up you can always make it out of the mouth of the channel. the main channel leading to the cannals is actually between 6 to 8 feet deep no matter what the tides are doing.

our only problem comes in when we get a northeastern wind. thats when the cannals run dry due to the wind pushing all the water out.

yea i got that hoa by me.. and they are a bunch of bullys.. when i moved there they told me i could not put my nissan titan in the driveway cause it has my buisness signs on it.. so i said.. ummmm their magnaeic. then they shut up.. so when i was shopping for a boat i was looking at 25 ft boats and i knew that i could not fit it on the side of my house, In my development (autmn Run) you can have a boat as long as its behind a fence. i could not get it to fit beside my house. so i saw at least 7 guys with boats parked in front of their house since the day i moved there.. so i said "hey they cant mess with me when there are at least 7 other guys with boats out there" so me and my wife went looking for boats.. we were origionally gonna buy a 25 ft baylinec cc. so before i bought it i told my wife hey lets go to all these guys who have their boats out and introduce ourselfs to them and ask whats the deal with the deed restriction.. So what do you know the day i went to talk to them it was like CRICKETS out there... noone had their boat out. So i was like hmmm... told wife maybee we should get something smaller for now. So i bought the 185 and it fits in my garage with the hitch bent in. a week later i went to one fo the guys with a boat and asked him "why did you all move yoru boats" he said "they threatened to sue us and we couldnt afford the lawyer costs to fight it".... Anyway i found out that theres covered storage by my house for 60 bucks a month so when i get a bigger boat thats a good thing.. plus my mom has 1 acre in the back of her house that is totally fenced in that i can store my boat if anything.. i just dont like storing outside cause im told that the sun can destroy your boat and interior even with covers.. so if i geta bigger boat id probably opt for putting it in my drive way until im told to move it then putting it in covered storage... Its such a shame how a hoe can tell you what to do with your own house.. and how to make it..they even dont allow blow up decorations for christmas.. we do it anyway.. screw them.
