Late 90's 270 Sundancer Thread

Just buy the battery powered portables. You can get multiples with digital readouts for the same money. Since it is not there I would think there would be a mark or telltale where it once was. If ever.

I still want my family protected with a permanently installed unit as well as a portable backup. The unit in the link seems like it would be ok.

I believe even if the boat had them installed in 1999, they should be replaced with new ones now. They only last a limited amount of time.

Anyone install a sub-woofer on one of these boats. I'm debating getting my audio re-done professionally and the guy says that you lose out on approximately 30% without a sub. I can't imagine where to put one though. Any ideas or pictures of a sub on the deck of this vintage of 270 sundancer?

I have been pondering the same thing. My thought was on the side of the cockpit somewhere around the starboard side compartment hatch. The question is how big and exactly where, but there is plenty of room to run the wiring. You could even put the amp in the side compartment. This is one of those projects for next year with me, so please post the results of what you come up with. Take lots of pics, before, during and after.

Factory installed the sub under the helm seat and amp is installed in the forward portside closet. FWIW.

Agree with that 100% we also have a battery powered one that's in the cockpit it has gone off several times because of good ole station wagon effect while going about 7 knots sight seeing, it takes less time than you think to pass out or worse from CO poisoning.

The one I linked to earlier in this thread is a 10 year battery powered one that can be permanently mounted. Essentially when the battery goes, the detector is at end of life anyway. I like this idea MUCH better than hardwiring it, because it is not dependent on the wiring in, in my case, a 15 year old boat. I was planning one permanently mounted down below, and one that is left mobile so that it can be brought into the cockpit.

So, when I bought the boat, I noticed pretty quickly that the steering was bound (there goes another $200 for a cable). Thanks to the beautiful weather we had here this weekend, I was able to finally get the steering cable out of the boat. PITA. Now that I have the stupid thing out, I find the cable number and it says SSC12478. As I suspected, SSC124 is a Rack System cable. However, I thought the last two digits are for the length, and obviously this is not a 78' cable. What gives? My plan was to get an 18 foot cable to replace the, according to the parts manual, 18.5 foot cable, and replace with that. The numbers on the cable threw me, and I just want to make sure I am correct before I plunk down the money. Does the "78" designate an 18.5 foot, or specialty cable for Sea Ray? Thanks.

If I remember correctly- when I replaced mine the marine parts counter said it was 1/2 foot size and they only made 1 foot increments. I had to decide longer or shorter by 6 inches. I don't remember what I ended up with.

Edit - I found this in the parts manual from SeaRay - you can download it from their website.

"4 1091958 STEERING, BACK MNT RACK/CABLE 18.5' ASSY"
Another edit - mine is a 1999 the 1998 list part number 0126920 but still 18.5 ft..

Good luck

Thanks, I had the part manual where I knew that it was supposed to be an 18.5' steering cable. Also, I knew that this length didn't exist. I guess what I am trying to do is reassure myself that is IS a standard SSC124 cable that I can replace with an SSC12418, and not have to worry about it not attaching to the helm and steering hookup on the outdrive.

I am having a hard time beiing confident that my batteries are being charged while pluged into shore power. the charger is factory and very hard to get to. i am willing to invest in a new charging system and even add a third battery for backup. Any suggestion here on how to be confident that my batteries are always ready to go? I have just had a new alternator installed. Looking to hit the water here in SC in a few weeks Thxs For any and all helpful info...

I use my Garmin chartplotter for this concern. I have voltage as one of my data points so I can see battery voltage then if I want to check my charger output I turn it on and the voltage output will rise as the charger comes on. Someday would love to have an electronic battery condition monitor.

FYI, this is not the forum for our boats, we are the Mid 90's 270.

I did have one but my computer decided to "lose" them. Sorry. It was a 10" enclosed that mounted under the helm seat facing the port lounger.

Sounds like new pictures are in order!
