With all of the back and forth about forum etiquette as of late I want to take a step back and show what this forum is really all about... My NS-100 craptastic VHF radio took a dive earlier this summer and I was all but out of options. I was getting by using a handheld while I weighed my options but needed something permanent. Knowing my options where limited I was looking at an $800 bill to get me back up and running. Not a big deal but an annoyance none the less.

Flash forward to last Thursday and a thread comes up from our friend Scott in Michigan city and he's got a line on a handsets that will replace my nonfunctional one. A few private messages later and a week in time this shows up on my doorstep

These are the kind if interactions that make this site so valuable to so many of us. Helping other boaters in need is what it's all about, whether it be taking the time to find this radio, and mail it to me (thanks sferg) or answering a rookies question that's been repeated a thousand times.

So let's take a step back and realize that the reason we are all here is to have a place to be ambassadors of our brand, help each other out, and what I think is very important to the health of this site, is to shoot the bull mostly good and sometimes bad but ultimately all part of what makes this forum the best on the net.

Thanks CSR and Jim for hosting and being a place to escape our mundane workweek, learn a few things, and make some friends near and far. And Scott I know your job is thankless at times but how you helped me out reaffirms that you are the right guy for the job.

Great story, thanks for sharing!

Well said Alex. I think this site is awesome. The info I get is great, the camaraderie is great, and the rest of it,,,, well,,,, it saves me a whole bunch of money by not having to subscribe to the comedy channel on our cable network:smt043

Nice to read  I am right there with you to thank all who keep this a positive, friendly forum and experience sharing resource.

I'll add one more thought here..........

Before you spend that $800 when this handset fails, I hope you will ask some of us here how to avoid throwing more money down that Northstar VHF gopher hole. Glad you got a resolution for now anyway.

Frank, I will definitely be here for thoughts. Luckily Scott negotiated a peach of a price on this so if I get a couple of years out of this one I'll be happy. I'm a couple years from a full electronics upgrade anyway so any new radio will be a drop in the bucket...

My secondary VHF is in the sun and now has a washed out LCD screen. I've been looking at possible replacements and I was amazed at the onboard systems Standard and Icom are including a VHF chassis now......like the Standard Matrix now has integrated AIS and a GPS receivers into the radio thus eliminating NMEA interfacing from your plotter or GPS.....all for about the price of a good VHF. I don't get excited about having to spend money, but I have to admit that radio looks like a cool addition for those of us in or who cruise to high traffic areas.

My Standard Horizon GX2150 is the previous generation that still needs connection from the plotter for GPS but the AIS is great and connected to an old OEM antenna has great range, confirmed at over 30 miles boat to boat. Love how it puts AIS targets right on my plotter.

You and me both! It's nice to start my day reading something like this, thank you

Nicely said, Alex. I bought my 340DA a year ago and have learned an amazing amount about every system because of the things that I learned right here on CSR. Thank you to all of you that take the time to help us learn about these boats. Your advice and opinions are an education every day. To let others at my marina know my appreciation for this forum, I got my CSR burgee a couple of weeks ago. Thanks again.

Very nice to read something nice for a change of late:)

I usually do not chime in if I have nothing new to add, but I'm making an exception because I think it's important to support the spirit of this tread. Attaboys to those evolved.

negativity gains us nothing.....it is OK to disagree with someone...in fact debate is very healthy to fully flush out all of the facts and present them in a manner we can draw our own conclusions....bashing someone's beliefs or attempts to participate in the discussions is very counter productive.....but we do have the responsibility to point out when we believe someone is posting information that we feel is unsafe or unethical so that future readers of the forum are aware of potential risks....like most i have received an enormous amount of assistance from this forum from both participating in discussions and reading the archived posts on various subjects.....i also have received many PM's from other forum members both giving me advise and asking my advise on various subjects......no need to dampen the spirit of the forum with negativity....we all have too much to loose....

Although i agree this is a friendly site,i do think some take the ocassional poke in the ribs a bit to seriously and build mountains out of mole hills when a comment dosent suit thier thought pattern. It is also nice to see boaters (s/f for one)helping each other muddle through a crisis big or small, thats why i come here.To quote spanky"If ya cant say something nice about something ,dont say anything at all"
