JL Audio / Pioneer Install

That's AWESOME!! When I get a chance to go get the boat and finally bring it home, a stereo upgrade is high on the "to do" list. What would you say is the most difficult part of this install (other than not being killed by the wife)?? How did you overcome the issues? What's been the easiest part of the install??

Again, it's beautiful!!

Looks good! Is a You tube video in the works so we can hear it? - Jeff

Hey Russ, That looks great!! Is that a spacer between the speaker and the arch? I bought 4 JL Audio amps to install this summer along with a new Clarion M309. I want to add speakers to my arch also and was concerned about the depth. You know Audiovox makes a key farb RF remote that you just put a Y on the antenna input to hook up then you can control from a distance of 75 feet I believe. Thats also going to be part of my install. I am planning on using a pair of JBL 8" subs and really like your location. I want to install one inside the cabin for movie time on the boat. Like your wife, mine is also not on board with this thus I feel like I must be on the right path too!!! Todd

Thanks! The most difficult would probably be just running wires from the cockpit to the cabin but it was all relatively easy. I bought a Klien metal snake (on a hand reel) that has been invaluable for running wire.

Hey Todd, Thanks, which JL amps did you get? Yes, it is a spacer. The access ports that were there are to access the antenna mounts so the through bolts required me to use a one inch spacer. I used some MDF, glassed it and went 2 inches on one side to angle them back. Then I used some padding and white vinyl to match the boat. I think I am going to use a Bose micro speaker home surround with the bass module and a big flat screen - I would like to convert the "aft" (mid) cabin into a TV/Movie room like the new SR. Dont really use that space but I dont really know if I would use it for TV either - It is a boat after all :smt101 Who knows?!

Russ, you are going to love that setup. Its always a pleasure when we get a customer that wants us to install a stereo of that caliber. Its pricey, but worth it. If anybody reading this is interested in JL stuff we stock most of it.

Thanks Jim, I didnt know that you stocked it. :smt038 I had the bug when I was a kid, with my cars, and I think its happening again! I am already thinking of ways to make it better. Good to know. :smt001

Russ-

Did you add more amps to the system, and if so did you put them all in the stock location? I was looking at all the same locations for speakers that you did, including the 2nd sub. Looks great!

Russ,
Are you concerned with battery draw. My 2nd boat is a 23 mako cc I installed a Clarion system with a 5 ch amp with a 24" Bazooka sub inside the cc and 4hr of fishing on the hook will drain one battery. Or maybe Buffet is too loud :smt038

I actually replaced the stock one, upgraded to a better bigger Clarion and now have replaced that with an HD JL Audio amp. When I replaced the speakers and added the new ones I simply wired the back 4 in series and the 2 subs in series, so they are running at 2ohms. This way I didnt have to run more wires to the amp and I have more speakers running at the same wattage = LOUD= Pissed OFF Admiral

75watts x 4 + 100watts x2 for the 6.5 speakers and 500 watts x 2 for the subs (approx)

No, I have 5 big batteries and a gen! But seriously one of the reasons I paid $1000 for an amp was the unique power supply in the amp. It requires less amperage than my original by far and when voltage is low it does not affect the amps output. You should look at a smaller version for your CC. BOE said they have them.

Russ- I'm trying to decide on amps as the first main component to my upgrade. Fairly sure I'll go with JL speakers/sub(s) again but wasn't sure between the Alpine or JL amps. Did you find anything that sold you on the JL? I'm a big believer in their stuff so just want to confirm what I probably already know.

The bigger questions is the difference between the HD and XD version. This is where I'm lost.

Ignoring the number of channels issue because I'm not sure if I'll with one versus two amps, what do I need to know about the differences?

Well, I dont know much about the current Alpine amp line up other than that folks that I know in the business prefer the JL so I took thier advice.
XD, I am told, are a replacement to the "G" series a middle of the road line that sound good but not as good as the HD and dont benefit from technologies like a RIPS power supply (requires less for more output) and also generates less heat.
So, in addition to friends advice after hearing them both and more importantly the power requirements I chose the HD, no question. One thing to keep in mind is that matching your components to one another and its environment are the most important considerations, coupled of course with your expectations. Its only as good as its weakest link.
You can also check with Jim (BOE) he sells the line and there are a couple of good threads you may want to review.
I hope this helps.

Yep, thanks. Just what I wanted to hear. I had a high end JL system in my last bowrider but had the slash series amps. They were very powerful and clear but they ran hot and I did have times when they shut down without a fan on them. The 7.7 JL speakers are my favorites for sure.

Question, power to the amps . . . are you running from a battery directly or from the battery switch? I would think from the switch this time around makes more sense.

I used the stock power supplied to the factory amp - no issues. I would agree with the switch.

That's a good read. If I went with the HD900/5 I'd power 4 cockpit speakers and so the question is . . . is the remaining wattage too powerful for 1 JL 10" sub rated for 250w? Or, would I need to run two subs? This is where I get a bit confused.
