JL Audio / Pioneer Install

That's a good read. If I went with the HD900/5 I'd power 4 cockpit speakers and so the question is . . . is the remaining wattage too powerful for 1 JL 10" sub rated for 250w? Or, would I need to run two subs? This is where I get a bit confused.

No, not at all, thats what the gain controls are for on the amp - you can turn it down. The 900 also has seperate inputs for the sub if your head unit has a level control itcan be controlled from the radio. You can also buy a seperate sub level cntrol that plugs right into the amp and can be mounted remotely to control at will. Or you can set it and forget it. Bet by next season you will be adding more speakers and a sub, thats the beauty of this amp, you wont have to change it.

I just upgraded last week to the JL HD/900 amp, four JL 7.7s and one JL 10" subwoofer. Sounds great! Now I can actually listen to music while underway. The installer is still trying to fix a whine on FM caused by DC interference. Hopefully, they get it done by the weekend.

Hi Jim, how did you make out with the noise? Do you listen to FM?
I do love mine, with the great weather up here I was able to strech it out a bit during a late night unexpected dock party (the best) everyone loved it (except for those tryin to sleep)
Forever the critic, having two 10" subs, I may add a mono block next year. Its a sickness

Hi Russ, Sorry it took so long to respond. I had to dig out the amps and read what I got! LOL :smt043 I did alot of E-baying....I have two M4300's (45w x 4 @ 4 ohms or 75w x 4 @ 2 ohms)to drive the 4 speakers in the cabin and in the cockpit ( 8 total). Then I got an M1400 for the cockpit sub (240w @ 4 ohms) and an E2150M (150w @ 4 ohms) for the cabin sub. I figured I can set it up so the cabin will run a little lower volume since its an enclosed space. The spacers look really great but I was hoping it was an off the shelf type item. I will need a couple but, my friend is a professional installer so maybe he can hook me up with something or possibly build them better and faster than I!!! Todd

Hey Todd, Thanks, which JL amps did you get? Yes, it is a spacer. The access ports that were there are to access the antenna mounts so the through bolts required me to use a one inch spacer. I used some MDF, glassed it and went 2 inches on one side to angle them back. Then I used some padding and white vinyl to match the boat. I think I am going to use a Bose micro speaker home surround with the bass module and a big flat screen - I would like to convert the "aft" (mid) cabin into a TV/Movie room like the new SR. Dont really use that space but I dont really know if I would use it for TV either - It is a boat after all :smt101 Who knows?!

Russ,
This is turning into a bit of a hassle. The dealer/installer spent a few hours trying to fix the whine then swapped the HD900 for an M600/6. They didn't tell me they were doing beforehand. It did eliminate the noise. They claim they can't figure out the problem and that this has been an issue with the other HD900 installs. When I got to the boat this weekend one speaker was out so I wasn't able to really evaluate the sound. They are going to replace the speaker this week.
Since I am only running one 10" sub I don't need the 500 watts on the sub channel that the HD900 puts out. If I accept M600 as a compromise I will giving up 25 watts of power per channel on the 7.7s and 100 watts on the sub. Not sure yet how this will play out. It will depend on how the system sounds when they replace the bad speaker.

It's always better to have more headroom(power over which is required in speakers) in your amp.Loosing 25w for 150w might not be an issue but loosing 25w for 50w would be.

I run 4 PG RSD components in the cockpit(pair in arch and a pair in stock side location) and a marine Alpine 10 in a sealed enclosure in the aft cockpit wall.Doing components in the arch is a PITA.It is all run off an Eclipse 5-channel and Pioneer deh-p4000ub for the ipod connection.I have my infared remote for the helm and a hard-wired remote for the swimdeck.

I find the highs/mids very good but the bass needs more work.It won't run evenly with the components volume wise. The enclosure is not sealed enough.

Ask them to talk to JL I have heard of it being an issue on FM. I will check mine - although I never listen to FM and dont really care if there is noise but I will check for you. I would not settle for the M600 - Shore makes a valid point especially when talking M series to HD. Additionaly you have the 7.7 I only have the 6.5 - I would spend a little time and resolve the issue with the HD and/or wiegh the need for FM especially just while the motor is running??

Thanks Russ!! I may take you up on that. Approx how much do they run, if you know? I will check with my stereo guy first but yours look very cool and I like that they angle toward the stern!! Todd

I just asked them and they will duplicate in marine grade vinyl for $65 each - they glass the wood.
