hello sea ray newbie looking for help

Had that problem once,a wire slipped down along the side of the battery box that belonged on the battery terminal,i think it was a ground, took me a few hrs to figure it out ,DUH.

Funny, that happened to me too this past spring. :smt017 :smt013

Re: Any help?

New battery
New solenoid
Will crank if solenoid is bypassed

To me it sounds like you burnt out a fuse somewhere or a wire. Maybe it is related to the no-start condition which lead to this issue. When you said you cranked and cranked on it trying to start it... Was it in bursts or did you just hold the key? If it was one long prolonged cranking session I would say you burnt out a wire, fuse or switch somewhere. If someone could post a wiring diagram for this boat I could write-up a troubleshooting flow chart and post it back on here...

Will crank if solenoid bypassed....

How are you bypassing the solenoid?

I am presuming the solenoid has either 3 or 4 wires on it?

2 heavy battery cables, 1 from the battery, the other from the solenoid to the starter motor, I presume that is how you are cranking it when you bypass the solenoid, supplying battery power direct to that terminal.

The other 1 or 2 wires, should be light gauge wires. If it is a 4 wire solenoid, 1 of the light gauge wires will be running to earth/negative. Which is generally to the engine block. Check that wire, ensure it is connected correctly at both ends, not broken or melted.

If it is a 3 wire solenoid, then it uses the body of the solenoid as earth/negative.

The 4th light gauge wire, is from the starter switch. With a test light, this should show power with the starter switch in the start position. You can supply power to this terminal, and the solenoid should engage, just to double check the solenoid if you wish......as already said earlier, new parts can be faulty, and all of us in tradesmen have been caught.

If the test light is not illuminating at the trigger wire on the solenoid, then go back and test the switch. Again if you can supply power to the trigger wire at the switch, that will test the wire from the switch to the solenoid.

Than you all very much for your responses i did not have time to look at it more today, hope to get on it in the morning. just to answer a few ?? that i have seen when i was cranking it was both prolonged cranking and bursts. dont know if this helps but when i hold the key in the start pos i do have pwr at the right side small post of the solenoid, it is a 4 post the old solenoid did have an s on the left side small post and an I on the right side. the new one says neither i assumed they are the same??? i been looking for a diagram but am having no luck so far coming across one.

They should be the same.

The two small posts, are basically just running through a coil, which acts as a magnet and connects the terminals for the battery cables.

If you have power at that small post and the solenoid is not engaging, then check the other small wire, I would probably make a small jump wire and run it straight to a good earth, see if that engages it.

With power on one of those terminals and earth on the other, it should engage. If not I would be suspecting the solenoid is faulty.

One word of caution, when continually cranking the engine, maximum crank time should be 30 seconds with a rest for 2 minutes before cranking again, otherwise you may find the starter will need replacing

Re: please help

The handle is in neutral but not sure the cable is. And I am not sure where to locate the neutral safety switch.

There is a circuit breaker small with a red button located just behind the carb. The wires going to those posts light up but the button does not come in or out it is stationary. Is there a chance that it could be the problem?

ou use a little jumper wire and jump across the large Red wire and the Yellow/Red wire the engine should crank. It won't actually start unless the key is on or if you have also jumped the Red to the Purple lead. If the engine cranks when you jump the Red to Yellow/Red lead; but it does not crank when you use the Key Switch, it means you have a bad Key Switch.

If your gauges activate but the engine makes no clicking or cranking noise when you turn the key to the START position, you might have a bad In-Gear-Starter-Protection-Switch. This switch is locted in the remote control. If the shifter is not in nuetral or if the switch is bad, the engine might not crank. Try wiggling the remote control handle in and out of gear a few times and it might work. pulled this off of sterndrives.com does this sound correct???

Re: please help

well after multiple combinations it started ty to everyone. but......lol with one combo it would try to startbut starter would stay engaged another way boat would stay running even without the key in now i remove the little brown wire that i thought came from the coil guess not it starts fine but i know that brown wire was hooked up to solenoid just not sure of its purpose?
