My Kohler guy came out today and determined that the head gasket is blown and that's why my gennie won't run. He's quoting me around 500-600 bucks to change out both. That quote is with me pulling her out and bringing her to him about 60 miles away to his shop. (authorized dealer)

Does this sound about right?

Also he says his shop has a "New" unit that has about 1 hour on it, (mine has the kawasaki engine with 940 hours on her) and they are looking to get rid of that unit. It came out of a customer's boat because one of the technicians pissed the customer off and the customer called Kohler and demanded a new one. The only problem with the new one it had a bad carbon monoxide sensor on it, so they swapped it out at Kohler's request and they still have it. It's a 5ecd

What DO these generators sell for new?

I'm thinking if the deal is good enough, I just might go with the new one that has the "Honda" engine on it, get mine fixed, then turn around and sell my old one.

Alright, let's hear it:smt100

The Kohler 5ECD low CO gen runs about $7000. You can also get a sound shield and remote start LCD panel but that will run another $500-600. If your old unit is OK but just the head gasket is bad you could repair yourself.

I was thinking the same thing. If you have to pull the gen out yourself, you may as well take it home and replace the head gasket. Of course, that's assuming the diagnosis was correct.

I'd fix what you got if you know a good portion of it's history. My question is why did it blow a gasket? I would check the entire cooling system to make sure it's running at optimum efficiency. Maybe it overheated?
