Generating trouble with Stray Current

I have a kohler 8.5 rmy thats been behind my house for 15yrs, maybe more. Ive never done anything to it outside of normal maintenance and it has never given me an issue. It is getting long in the tooth and im thinking of upgrading it in the spring. Kohler 10RESV was what i was looking at. Any disadvantage of going with a vertical shaft setup over horizontal or is it just for a smaller footprint?
That RMY is the air cooled equivalent of that avocado green refrigerator at your parents basement that will never die. I have a buddy in Montana who services about 30 of them at cattle watering stations. Quite a few of them are working on their third turnover of the hour meter.

Honestly, if it’s not giving you trouble, I would maybe invest in a new set of brushes, clean the slip rings and send it.

If you are going to replace it, I would consider the 14RCA over the 12RESV. The 14 RCA is the same internals that the old 12RES used and that was rated for off grid use. The RCA also has hydraulic lifters over flat tappet’s that never needs valve adjustment, and the slip rings are incredibly easy to access for cleaning and brush inspection. I haven’t seen a lot of trouble with the verticals, but they’re not my favorite.

I am assuming you have a Kohler RDT critical circuit panel paired to that, which has the push button exerciser in the transfer switch. If you do go with either of the new machines, you may want to consider upgrading the transfer switch as you’ll be able to monitor utility voltages and switch positions via the OnCue app.

They have plenty of oil...
Especially since that 2.4 Mitsubishi in that little C25 doesn’t use any oil at all spinning 1800 RPMs. I’ve never seen one of those burn any appreciable amount of oil during the service intervals.

“Can you give me an estimate to fix it?”
