Garmin Nuvi 550

Looks like a nice little unit - did you order the water charts for it? Love to hear some feedback on how it actually performs as a backup.

They have not released yet so I don't have them on the site. Make sure you ordered from an authorized Garmin dealer as non-dealers or resellers won't see them for at least 3 months after dealers do. It is a really sweet unit. I ran a special in the Club Level section for the Garmin Oregon and had some takers. maybe I'll do the same for the 550.

When are they scheduled to be released? I just read the link and it looks like a pretty neat GPS.

OK, I see. Thank you for the advice, I ordered it from an authorized Garmin dealer.

Initially I wanted to buy a GPS for the car and I found a press release on this unit. You have also to buy the G2 blue chart from Garmin which increase the price but is still a very good deal since it can be used both for the car and the boat.

The planned date of availability is end of august I believe.

I forgot to come back with some feedback. The unit is very good for automotive use, but for the boat it is a different story...........

I got it in September and only used it twice before winterizing the boat. So I will fully test it next summer.

First the goods: The screen is very bright so it is usable in daylight. Very quick to capture the Sat. Easy to use. The unit looks/feels very solid.

The bads: For boating use, it is almost a backup device...that's it. It still have bugs like Nav aids not showing properly (ouch.....). I am still waiting from a fix from Garmin. It uses the G2 bluechart, but with (very) limited use of its functions (like no 3D, ...) Screen is maybe a little too small for boating use.

It was the first time I was using two GPS for navigation and I liked it a lot. My other GPS is a Raymarine C80. I had one GPS in 1/4 mile setting and the other in 1/2 mile or 1 mile setting. It provided me more information to help predict my moves.

Maybe I should get a second permanengt GPS on board..... ;-)
