Well last week I took my first Intro Flying lesson . Since my boat is laid up for the winter I figured it would be a good time to try my hand at something I have really been interested in from a far. The wife gave me two hrs of instruction plus flying time, for Xmas last year and I went up last sat. I was shocked to meet my instructor who, was younger than 3 out of my 4 children. At 21 he looked too young to drive a car never mind a plane. Turns out he's a pretty good pilot already he's been flying for 4 years and an instructor for 1 . We. Started with some ground instruction and then we (I) taxi'ed to the runway where we got clearance to take off, I looked at the captain he nodded , I gave the Cessena 172 full throttle we where moving down the runway and before too long I pulled back on the yolk and she gently lifted off the ground, my heart stopped and I could hear myself breathing, not from fear from excitement . I flew the entire time out over the Long Island sound and then over my house just off the north shore. We flew over my marina on the south shore and witnessed the damage from above. After lining the plane up to the runway at Republic Airport, the captain took the controls over , I still can't believe he had me take full control until we where ready to land, guess they really want to sell flight lessons? It was an experience I will never forget and can't wait to start flight school (hopefully soon) . Here's a few pics.

Too cool! The middle pic must be of you doing acrobatics huh? I took lessons a while back, I had 13 hours when I stopped.
I was planning my first cross country with the instructor. It was too cool while I did it but..........
Good luck and I hope you get your license.

Very cool!!

That is a day you will always remember.
Just Wait til you kick the instructor out and solo!
That will be another day burned into your memory.
Welcome to the $300 hamburger club.

Very cool. I took ground school when I was in the USAF in Alaska but on my measly pay I couldn't afford to go through with the flying. Congrats to you for doing it.

Way to go Joe!!! I'd probably pee myself a little if I did that! Good Luck with the lessons!!

Very nice. I knew you were talkint about taking lessons over the summer. That was quick. Now ya just have to learn how to jump out. Thats the fun part.

Congratulations! :) Next huge step is your first solo flight. I remember mine as it was yesterday! :)

I had Twin IR (but expired) due to lack of private flying possibilities down here in the Middle East. Did everything up to solo on C172 and then the rest on Socata TB20. I have about 200 hours on Malibu Mirage and 300 hours on the TB20. Then a few here and there for Twin (40 hours total twin I think). I did training for the Malibu Meridian as well so have a good 30 hours on that.

Continue - and get it over and done with! :) It is great fun and you can get many fun hours looking down from above.

Here is a couple of pictures from my favourite trip ever... From Piper FL -> Denmark in the first ever Piper Malibu Meridian going to Europe. Pictures are from Narsarsuaq Airport on Greenland :) I was with the Danish dealer and one of the "official" Test pilots from Piper.

Great to hear! You will love it. I have been around aviation since I was a kid(worked at the local airport in Maryland) I was the Aviation Petroleum Transfer Technician (pumped gas) but got a lot of flight time doing it. It's like boating, expensive but once you get bit by the bug your gonna be hooked.

Steve
Nice looking V tail Bonanza, hope you had the yaw dampener on that one. They can be squirrely without it .

Kaz,
Beautiful Malibu Kaz. There was one at our airport non turbo prop and she always looked sexy.

I hope you continue with flying. I agree, the first flight is a little crazy with so much control, but the instructor has a foot on the right rudder during takeoff roll and a hand near the yoke. I have been flying since I was young and still love it. The price is an issue now and boating is more practical for the family...for now . The first solo and cross country are great fun and build confidence. Keep us posted if you continue your lessons.

Welcome to the club!! And you thought boating could get expensive, just wait....(Grin) I am a bit worried about that middle picture. It is way to early to be doing stunts....

Hey guys , thanks for the comments. They have called me already to see if and when I plan on continuing ( they put together a proposal for me ) . So once I figure the finances out ( two in college) and a boat. I'll be back it was so much fun. As to the comments on the second photo the inst was flying any time I asked to snap a photo or video.

Better install a radiator on your wallet. I got my ticket a little over a year ago. Departing from here at 2PM today to go to Boston for Thanksgiving. I fly everywhere now.

Get gas at each stop on your 3-leg solo cross country. Ask me how I learned that one, at age 17.

Wouldn't be the first to use a little more fuel while "finding your way."

John, Can you take a second to tell us what aircraft we are looking at?

As always, Thank you for your service & for the sacrifices that you and your family have made.

Alaska - KC-10 Tanker, F-16 (single tail), F-15 (twin tail), inside of KC-135 tanker with my daughter in refueling pod with me getting gas (F-15C/D).
