Film\streak on water from exhausts, losing antifreeze too

A combustion leak test shows exhaust gases in the cooling system. Shop that installed the engines comes out tomorrow to do a cooling system pressure test, cold and hot, and cylinder compression tests. I hope to know something by this time tomorrow.

Hey Greg ... I was up at SML the last two weekends and we had fabulous weather highs in the mid-70s and we ran the lake a few times plus I did some clean up and just general puttsing around in the boat.

Was thinking about you and your ordeal and almost posted a messsage last night to see how you are coming.

Just wanted to say that I am really sorry to hear about all of this, it really sucks when this happens and I know how it feels. :smt009 At least it's in the winter so you can have her back in shape for the spring.

Sounds like head gaskets after all ... keep us updated and I hope we can hook up at SML next spring or summer

We have been boating too, too nice outside not to. We were told no more than 5 engine hours post oil sample, which was 2 hours ago.

Latest update, Port engine passed a hot and cold coolant system pressure test up to 1400 psi.

Port engine #5 spark plug is very clean, which suggests a head and\or head gasket problem. Mechanic did not have the right set of tools with him to pull the head. Will be coming back out to do that soon.

Starboard engine passed passed a hot and cold coolant system pressure test up to 1400 psi. It also passed the Combustion leak test.

Film on the water ifrom the port exhaust is gas from it burning to rich on a cold start.

Agreed, and so far the time\hours is covered under the engine warranty.

They plan to install a new head gasket on the #5 cylinder side and then perform the same tests.

Ok I think that it's a save decision.

Success Peter.

UPDATE:

Port head pulled yesterday. The head had "clean" valves on the #5 cylinder, the piston looked good but there was some anti-freeze in the exhaust ports of the manifold. The head gasket did not have any signs of leakage. This leaves two possibilities per the mechanic. First of all, there could be a crack in the the valve seat of the head or there could be a defect in the manifold itself. Mechanic is taking those two items to a machine shop to have them pressure tested to determine which of the two is defective.

Hey Greg! Just a thought ... I would insist to have them Magnaflux tet the head(s). This is an electromagnetic test proceedure and the ONLY sure-fire way to determine cracks. Pressure tests are not always correct.

Update:

Shop just called, they completed the repairs yesterday. The exhaust manifold and head passed pressure testing at the machine shop. He said the head bolts did not appear to have the required sealant on them so they took care of this while reinstalling the head with a new head gasket. He said it's possible this could have come off during the removal of the head.

He said the old head gasket looked OK to the naked eye but it's not unusual for them to seperate or have a crack not visible to the naked eye. The engine ran strong and passed the same cooling system exhaust gas test it previously failed. They want us to put her up on the plane this weekend and run her hard for a while to see if there is still a leak. All of their tests were done in the slip.

Good luck greg!! I am crossing fingers that this is the end of your engine trouble and that it's fixed for good now.

After 4 hours of boating we are still losing antifreeze. Oh well, back to the mechanic.

We go on a 2.5 hour crusie tomorrow to the shop that installed the engines. They want to keep her for a while and do some on water tests. Previously they were driving back\forth to do the repairs and testing the engine in the home slip versus testing during and after a cruise.

Jasper iEngines s OK with us running the engine that long at crusing speed. The mechanics first guess is a crack cylinder.

Greg,

Thanks for the update <and sorry to hear about your problems>. Please keep us posted on how it goes. I'm also curious how Jasper handles the issue, as I have 1450 hours on my engines and know an engine replacement is in my future.

Thanks & Good luck
Larry

Port engine update: After heating up the port engine and pressure testing the exhaust manifolds, the port outside one (closest to the hot water heater) had antifreeze in it and failed a pressure test. New one on order. It's a SLM or SML exhaust manifold, replaced when the engines were replaced. The exhaust manifold came from Jasper so it's covered under warranty.
