Film\streak on water from exhausts, losing antifreeze too

Port engine update: After heating up the port engine and pressure testing the exhaust manifolds, the port outside one (closest to the hot water heater) had antifreeze in it and failed a pressure test. New one on order. It's a SLM or SML exhaust manifold, replaced when the engines were replaced. The exhaust manifold came from Jasper so it's covered under warranty.

Ok glad they found it Greg
And that it wasn't summertime....

Greg,

Perhaps the best news is that they are standing behind their work. I have seen a number of new manifolds develop pin-holes/cracks during the casting process that don't show up until they are on the engine. What surprises me is the amount of anti-freeze which is being consumed over a short period of time. Typically, those cracks or pin-holes consume less.

The other odd thing is the Starboard engine is also consuming anti-freeze. Typically, the risers(elbows) gaskets are usually at fault as mentioned by others. I'm not sure what gaskets they used to block off the manifold from the riser and if they used sealant. Different gasket material has various degrees of success. All gasket materials fail eventually given the conditions they are subjected to. The gasket material usually fails to the inside (exhaust) area and puts antifreeze into the exhaust ports. You can smell the antifreeze on startup. Properly torqueing the riser bolts is also critical. Some people do replace the gaskets on a regular basis which is a smart idea.

It sounds like the guys you have working on it will find the problem. The repeated diagnostics are a bit concerning but they are going after the easy stuff first and it is on their/Jasper nickle. Also, if there is an internal engine issue (cracked cylinder) everything gets more complicated.

Jasper generally does a good job of rebuilding (they like to say remanufacturing) but I am always concerned about reusing marine blocks and heads given the severe conditions they are subjected to.

I'm curious what they tell you next.
