Diesel View / Vessel View Upgrade

For us that have the VV7 which has NMEA2000 connectivity does the Garmin update recognize and display as Mercury VV data with all of the whistles and bells? I'm unclear exactly what this update does and by what means it gets the data...
Currently, I can see and display engine data (from Smartcraft through NMEA 2000) on both the Maretron displays as well as the Garmin displays. I haven't tried to poke in deeper to find out what other data from Smartcraft is being provided on the NMEA 2000 backbone via the Vessel View 7.

@ttmott....I cannot answer your question. I found this while poking around the Garmin site.

https://www8.garmin.com/marine/PDF/MarineSoftwareUpdate/2021/June2021.pdf
Hmmm - that says "via Mercury Smartcraft interface sold separately". It appears regardless the Garmin interface is NMEA 2000 as I don't believe Garmin allows critical data via Bluetooth or WiFi. So it must be a Mercury Smartcraft to NMEA 2000 "interface". The VV7 is such a device but also that costly little dongle is that Mercury just came out with.
I did a S/W update on all of the Garmin equipment a couple of weeks ago; wonder it this feature was a part of it...

I installed the software update today; it was only released six days ago.
No obvious changes to the engine interfaces. I suspect the Garmin will have to see the new Smartcraft Connect device to bring up the new VV pages.
Documentation to date is very fuzzy, mostly press releases and Garmin has not updated the manuals. But, my sense is that the Connect plus the software will result in a full VesselView emulator and will obviate the need for a separate Smartcraft device (although gauges might be a problem). Software notes on the release indicate that fault codes will be available.
The update took the most time on the autopilot, notes indicate the magnetic variation model was changed. Re-calibration of the compass is probably in order.

Anyone know how to get this data to disply on the screen? For the life of me I cannot figure out how to get this data to display????

Ha, I saw that in Joe's post and thought about you asking this question a while ago.
Sorry I can't help, but how's that for memory?
PS, your trip pics are amazing.

On the MFD's? Engine hours?
I seem to be able to get sensor data like pressures and voltages but not calculated data (like load, Fuel data, and hours) from the NMEA 2000 interface on the VV7. With that said I would hope the Vessel View Link would pass all of the data as there is no VV display. I know the engine hours are a data stream from the engine's ECM but I'm not sure what protocol. Probably an SAE J1939 PGN that is part of the engine's J1939 data on the Smartcraft network. It appears the Vessel View (at least in my case) is specific to which data it passes to the NMEA 2000 network. Also, what calculates the fuel data? Is it the VV or engine ECM? It would be interesting to camp a Maretron J2K100 on the Smartcraft CAN 2 network and see what NMEA 2000 data comes about.

Tom,

I am just trying to get that circled "data box" to show up on my VV703, I know what goes to the MFD's is limited but when I see VV703's with this data displaying I can't for the life of me figure out how they are doing it.

Ah - that's not your display in the photo.. I had thought you were trying to get your VV display's data to other displays. Sorry, I was confused but what's new..

Any idea how difficult it is to go from a vv7 to a vv703?
I'm now pretty convinced my vv7 is on it's way out.

From what I can tell it is "plug & pray" connectors look the same

I think I figured it out... The call it the "instrument bar" Now I will check it when I go to the boat later today to finish the big clean

Thanka Grant. Pretty close. Spoke to arnie on the diesel line at mercury. Needed 1 additional cable. Everything should be here by next weekend. Wasnt expecting a midseason project but..... Oh well.
I'll take pics and post

VesselView 7 to VesselView 703 was very easy. As mercury said. Just needed 1 additional cable:
8m0075066 - which is described as a vesselview 4 harness.
You will need 1 available port on your smartcraft junction box to power the vesselview 703. The vesselview link is powered by the primary harness (mercury 8M0075065).

Nice… you know the rules… it didn’t happen unless you post pictures!!!

Yep... I know.. I know.. Was hoping to get away without posting pictures til I get a new panel from Tecnografic.
The vv703 pushes the limit on height on that upper helm panel and I had to skew it about 1/4" from center on the existing panel so I could keep on of the lower screws. Sam @ Tecnografic will be moving the lower holes slighly outboard on the new panel.
I'll be down at the boat tonight and get pics of the finished product.

The NMEA2k Tee's one from the VV Link and the other to the VV703

the VV Link mounted up and out of the way.
That is the connection to the primary harness in the photo as well.

Couple of I70's would look really good on each side of that VV703.... Just saying
