Cummins 450 parts

What do you carry for spares on board? Filters- what else? Where do buy them? Thanks for the input, I have to stock up.

Impellers, fuel filters, bunch of Racor filters, belts, pencil zincs, make it yourself gasket kit, etc.

Ken, do you buy from a dealer or ?

Fuel filters from the dealer as well as belts. Do a search for the impellers (remember that Cummins doesn't make the way pumps). I bought Racor filters on eBay. Zincs at boatzincs.com and any parts store for gasket material. When do you take title of the new beauty?

Thanks, I did yesterday

If you want to stick with the recommended 15W-40 Valvoline Blue (Cummins spec), WalMart usually has the best price, around $12.95/gal. Occassionally the Cummins dealer will have it on for $10/gal for a spring promotion. As I mentioned in a previous post, consider replacing your Sherwood pumps sometime with something better. Also Wolverine pan heaters are a nice addition. Both ideas are from boatdiesel.

Good luck with the new boat.

I used to get any part that weren't carried local from Tony Athens. It was the least I could do for all the times he would take my calls and help me over the phone.

Onboard I would carry spare fuel filters, belts, impellers and the tools necessary to do the work while away from the dock. Having a little extra oil is a good idea as well. You'll see, the basics of diesels is pretty simple and keeping them running is pretty easy to do Keep the rust off the engines, use them and make sure they are propped to get WOT under full load. You'll love how a boat handles with diesels!!

I get my oil, coolant and secondary fuel filters from www.fleetguardfilters.com

Stuart

Excellent, thank you

That's great, I remember that. Do you happen to know the part numbers on the belts? Also what micron rated filters do you buy?
Where did you get the Wolverine pan heaters? Is there a specific model? Thanks for the help

Give the folks at Wolverine a call and ask but they recommended the 125W models for me. Gary (Four Suns) had done a good write up on the heaters but I think he used the 250W models. You can either plug them into a temperature sensitve splitter plug or hardwire them as I had done. I throw on the switch when I arrive at night and next morning the motors fire right up with little or no smoke. With regard to Racors you can either use the 30 microns or 10. I'm currently running with 10's and I change them once a season unless I see them getting fairly dark. We get them locally through a wholesale account for around $6 or $7 each. (It's amazing how much boat items get marked up.)

Belt part number is: cummins 3288812 for the mains. I used the 125w pan heaters, and am very happy, but I boat on the west coast so? Check out www.truckhelp.com for fleetguard parts and filters, cheapest I have found.

Excellent, thank you

Do the Racors have part numbers? I have Defender around the corner but they are not that cheap!

If you have 900 series racor you will need 2040 filters and they com in 2,10 and 30 micron.

Stuart

Thanks Stuart, I do have two on each side and a series 500 for the genny.

Maybe I don't, it says 90 gph max and mine says 180 gph on the housing. Model 75/900 max? Are they counting both filters?
