Complete Bridge Sound System Upgrade to Concert Sound Status!!!!!!!!!!!!

I like this thread . . . . Are you serious about Concert Sound?

If so I'm in.

Sorry I didn't get a chance to write more, before I hit the POST button.... Yes I am, but I'm not going to the degree you did, I am going with All JL Audio speakers, some component and some coaxial...., I want to put some in the Helm dash and I think I'm going to put some in the ceiling, BUT whatever I do it's for Clear low level concert sound.............I like your post I can't find it anymore though......

The original speaker holes make the speakers point to the floor, come on man, i can't believe this....So I'm going to replace these, and add more speakers into the mix, maybe 6 more.... and I'm going to have two subs, just installed a 10" JL Audio Sub, and Kicker Amp, it sounds great at lows and highs.....
So...HIFI what are you thinking...???

I need more information. Are you thinking of a nice all around sound that can really perform or a system with a staged concert sound ?

More of a All around performer, with more of a concert sound when your at the helm....and not blasting, I don't want to rock the waves...Yeah know With Great highs and deep lows, Sort of like when your listening to Kenny G, He needs to be at the helm playing,,,

I'm looking at getting 2 sets of the JL Audio &.7 Components I'm installing the 6.5 coaxial in the spaces already provided by Sea Ray yeah know...
I also have 2 1" tweeters for the Helm station, so the highs can be right at our faces....mimiking the stage...

Hey guys, I updated my complete audio system throughout my boat recently so thought I might chime in. I always have my generator on or I am hooked to shore power so I decided to covert the whole sound system to AC power. I now have a Bose 48 Lifestyle system in the main salon, a Bose auxillary Amp in the Main Bed room, that just drives the speakers in that room, a second Bose Amp that just drives the speakers in the Cockpit, and a third auxillary amp the drives a pair of Outside speakers on top of the Hard top. All speakers in all areas are Bose speakers. Therefore, I have four seperate listening areas with remotes for each area. The volume and sound source for each area are sperately controlled by the remotes. I have Sirrius Radio, An Ipod Dock, A CD/DVD player, as well as Digitally stored CD's in the Bose 48 main controller. Each remote also has a "local" button that allows the TV sound in that room to play thru the speakers. The system is totally cool. The best thing overall I have found is that each remote has a local mute button and a mute all button. A push of a button from any of the remotes can silence the whole boat. Bose really has there act together on this one. The system is nothing but top quality. Again, this system is totally run by AC power so if you don't run you gen all the time, this probably isn't the system for you.

boltman,
Check out our site's large boat installation gallery, specifically the Sea Ray gallery. You'll find a recent 47 DB that has a pretty good exterior system with some explanations as to what we did and why.
I'm not a fan of separate supplemental tweeters that are removed from the fullrange speakers by any distance. A little verticle separation is fine as long as you have a method to independently adjust the gain to offset the positional advantage. Horizontal separation does more to destroy the image rather than enhance it. High frequency ambience and/or front stage can be nice until the tweeter becomes localized or detached sounding. Remember that 50 percent of all musical fundamentals occur between 200 and 600 Hz which is the sole domain of the midbass driver. The main contribution of tweeters are a full decade above that range or approaching three octaves higher. So its a bit tricky to make it sound plausable.

I personally believe that it is impossible to recommend speakers for someone else. I have no idea what range the other person has the ability to hear and even less of an idea of what appeals to them. The target sound levels as well as the source material and the source components all become part of the equation. I recommend that people audition speakers for themselves whenever possible. To your point, Bose doesn't generally appeal to me but they have one heck of following so they do appeal to a broad audience.

All highs no lows Bose!

Actually the original Bose saying went as, " No highs, no lows, it must be Bose". In many of the initial Bose speakers, and we have to go back decades with this, Bose used singles and multiples of a 4.5" fullrange speaker. It didn't have a larger driver and it didn't have a tweeter or even a whizzer cone. So the bandwidth was in fact limited. With inventive enclosures and equalization they got the most out of these simple drivers and many sounded pretty decent. No one confused Bose with esoteric speakers during the peak of the two-channel HiFi movement. But that is old, old news and hasn't been the norm in a couple of decades. Today I'd use the Bose Lifestyle system in the cabin, salon surround sound and staterooms in a heartbeat.

just don't anchor next to me, I like quiet.

I took the Bose Lifestyle system out of the front stateroom on my 480. There are lots of issues with Bose in trying to integrate it in with other systems (i.e. video) and having a single and easy remote. The other big issue, which is why I took it out of the front stateroom, is the speakers are something that bolt on the wall and stick out. In rough seas, they would pull out trim pieces (beefed them up after that) then the metal brackets themselves would break and the speaker would be dangling by the wires. I left the Lifestyle system in the salon. It's nice and works well there... but getting the Bose stuff to work in harmony on a single programmable remote is frustrating and keeping it mounted on the wall is even more frustrating... But then again, some people here put those articulating mounts on LCD's and seem to be OK with that... They didn't work for me either.

Another example... Why the hell doesn't the Bose Lifestyle system have a Blu Ray disc player in it? Hello?

I looked at that website with the installs on the 480... Speakers on the bow? Those things would get washed off the boat within a week...

Again.. depends how you use the boat. If you are a lake boater and go raft up and blast music, then I understand... If you do runs of 5+ hours a day and long distances you are not going to be installing bow ornaments.

I will be interested to see what you do on your bridge... Good luck getting enough DC power up there.

I installed 8 speakers and 2 subs on the helm of my 400DA. Power is supplied by two 750 amps. With every thing cranked up I am sure the vibrations could fracture kidney stones. All well and good but the spousal unit has developed some odd aversion to increased volumse. I mean realy; how wants to hear beach tunes at number two on the volume control. So in the spirit of matrimonial harmony and compromize I wired in a interrupter and volume control for the amp controlling the majority of the upper solon decibels. It's just to the right of the wheel so only the Captain has control of the tunes.

Lots of good points about the BOSE.

Additional good point about stand alone and displaced tweeters ...rarely a good idea.

Your biggest challange is the roof mount speakers and all the sound artifacts the fiberglass adds. I don't think that approach could ever sound fantastic.

OK THis Weekend, I crawled inside the helm station... and found the Amp and disconnected every wire and terminal that was attached to this amp. Extended the speaker wires and re connected each wire properly.. The Factory.. I'm just not sure about. Installed all new JL 6.5" Coaxials where the Clarion's were and I'm going to add a few more JL's to the collection, and I might need a few Custom Speaker Enclousres..Yeah I know HIFI.... I might have to do it..

The Factory.. I'm just not sure about.

You're not sure about? About what? Their ability to install wiring for their sound systems? THEY SUCK!!! How did you like all the black tape that has turned to goo?

The word Suck doesn't even come close, and Well Yes the tape was still holding strong, I had to cut it all with a razor blade...But Damn... Why put an adjustable Amp, where you cannot reach to make any adjustments....I don't get it??And to NOT even Amp up the SUB..!!!!!Holy Crap, there's so much to make right on this boat, Don't get me wrong...It's great and it's the nicest boats I've ever seen, but it's going to be a task just making things operate right, like now each speaker is it's own channel....Yeah....
