Cockpit Carpet on the Cheap

Looks great. Thats what I'm going to do. Here the carpet store charges 1.00 per foot for binding. I called snap in carpet. They want 570.00 for my boat. I think thats crazy.

Good comments from all. I don't know if I need to leave a border for them to add the binding. I'm going to take one piece in, get it done, and check the fit. I have to tell you all, I really like the look when I enter the cockpit. This arrangement will not work for all. We treat our cockpit like our living room. Of course, our kids do too (wet, dirty feet).

I don't know if it'll settle into the hatch cracks - yet to be determined. If it does, I'll look into either some sort of padding or backing, or for another $40, I'll re-cut it.

The hatch will open with the carpeting in place - That's why there's the break between the front and back halves of the cockpit. I'll have to ensure it doesn't droop into the ER when I close the hatch - there is some overlap.

It's a fairly fun, easy, inexpensive and attractive upgrade. I never liked seeing the grime on the white floor - now, I won't be able to see it!

On a side note, you can feel every piece of sand on the carpet liner in the cabin, so, for the last 1 1/2 years, we've had throw rugs (same stuff) over the liner. It collects/isolates all dirt/sand from your feet, and it's padded really well (carpet, liner, throw rugs). Very nice, cheap addition.

It's not just the price, it's the way this industry has developed the standard - large borders around carpet. Large gaps between pieces. Backing that fails and trashes the cockpit flooring... Huge expense for a less-than-desirable product.

We do the 'throw rug' thing also...

....It helps to keep the main rugs a little cleaner. The problem I'm finding is that they get beat up by the sun and then leave little bits of colored 'fuzz' all over the place even though they are rated for outdoor use...

I've thought about the same thing but before putting the piping/binding on the edge mask it and take it to a place where they spray in the Rhino bed liner. The Rhino is more gooey than Line-X. I may have them try it on a small piece of carpet to test. My idea would be if they can just spray the back quickly after another job the rate may be really low and provide a durable backing.

Looks good John.

Thanks. Gutsy move - Rhino liner can be an awful mess. Is that stuff soft when it dries?

I will first of all, apologize for my earlier comment. Once done, it looks great and cost you a fraction of what snapin carpet.com would charge. Sorry again for my ridiculous stance...you ever type something in and hit post reply and then regret it? I did, and do. The finished product looks great and you should be proud of your work.

Wow. My technique of laying low and taking the hit paid off. Yes, to answer your question, I have. Giving the depth of my initial post, I could see your side and decided to try to guilt you into retracting your statement. Perhaps it is I who should apologize. In reality, we each react to what we read, and sometimes after giving it a little more thought (and after receiving more info) we reconsider.

In either case, thanks for the words. It could still turn out to be crap, though. My weakness is that if it does, I'll admit it in public.

John - looks really good. My kids were just asking what I wanted for fathers day - I think they may be able to swing $40! :smt038

Well done.:smt038 I was a little shocked by your original post but I continued to read on. This "retraction" is a class move. Thanks.

I'm in the market for a new carpet too. I don't want to use my existing carpets for templates for the same reason...too much space between seams and borders.

Does the carpet NEED to have a rubber backing? My floor will stay dry 99% of the time (if that matters). Also, can a carpet like that sit on top of the existing snaps on the floor without seeing bumps?

There's a carpet binding guy here in Perth Amboy for any NJ locals interested. I've had a bunch of stuff bound by him - nice guy and he does great work. He's bound up area rugs for the house and the boats from, left over carpet from the house and the thicker "off the roll" outdoor grade carpet at Home Depot. He gets $1/ft but for a bigger job you'd probably get a better deal. He also bound up new cockpit carpeting for MarkD here on the boards out of a berber that matches his decor. That was 4+ years ago and it's only now getting a bit ratty.

Picking up the rugs tomorrow from the binder guy. I replaced most of the snaps on the floor with small, round-headed screws put back with sealant. The snaps don't make the carpet bulge up, but they wear badly into the backing. Also, they seem to cause the rubber to fail earlier, but my new rugs don't have rubber - yet. It was $1/foot. I think it'll be about $40 - $50. So, now, we're up to almost $130 for wall - wall carpet, that I like, in a 340 cockpit. Who wants to buy a pattern?

Update - got rugs back from carpet guy. Tack on another $38. We're up to $118 for wall-wall carpet in the cockpit on every square inch. Add $20 for a runner we lay over it to absorb most of the dirt/wear. Every time I enter the cockpit from the cabin, the color catches my eye. My wife and I really really like it. $138 well spent. The blister on my finger where the scissors rubbed through my skin is almost healed too. Final pictures coming soon (carpet, not finger).
