Cockpit Carpet on the Cheap

John, do you think a finishing washer used with a flat/countersunk screw would be less damaging?

Yes, but I wanted to leave it close enough to stock that someone could go back to the original design. The little round-head screws are hardly noticeable to the feet, and are imperceptible with the carpet over them.

I totally agree. You wouldn't want to make the holes any bigger. But, to better clarify what I was saying, here's a finishing washer: http://www.jamestowndistributors.co...rds!6456&keyword=(finish+washers)&match_type=

The flat screw would fit inside the washer and the top of the screw would be level with, or slightly below, the top of the finish washer. You don't have to countersink the hole in the fiberglass. The hole that's in the floor would not be altered in any way. The finish washer would just allow for a flatter (although wider than the screw you're using now) feel.

Just a thought! :smt001

Oh. Nice idea. It would spread the vertical height of the screw head out over a larger area to make the angle less aggressive. If I notice them, or if they wear into the back of the rugs, I'll have to consider them. Thanks.

John, That looks great.

John, I'm really impressed - it came out very nice.

Time to put rubber backing on. Last year, someone posted about some goop you get at Lowe's, I believe. Any help? Any other suggestions. My goal is to make it a little softer and secure the back sides to stop some flaking from the carpet backs.

John
J Levine had something that worked real well. I'll direct his attention to this thread.

It's throw rugs in berber. The backing is the standard weave stuff, not rubber. I would consider painting them in rubber, if that system works well.

If nothing else, I have perfect patterns for next year! : )

Where did you buy the rugs and what size?

Very nice job.

www.grizzlygrip.com is what I used. Worked great, much better than even the orginal backing. I think I ended up using 1 gal and 1 quart to do my carpets on the 370.

Most likelly, it's not "carpet on the cheap".

By the time you fart around with trying to put a backing material on it I doubt it would be much more...

If I recall correctly the 1 gal can was about $79 (I just found the site https://www.durabakcompany.com/inc/template.cfm?page=1 and looks like they raised prices by $10). So, that 1gal was enough to cover my all 3 cockpit carpets. I think John spent around $140 (John, please correct me if I'm wrong) for all his carpets and if he manages to cover all carpets with $90 1gal can it's still a very good deal.

It looks like both products (grizly grip and durabak) are competetive in final result and price. So, it's up to the boat owners to make the choice what fits better. The good part is that we have choices and some proof that these products do a good job.
