Clarion aux input and cockpit speakers

I'm trying to figure out how things are wired on my 280DA's stereo. I have two speakers down in the cabin that when the amp is off only sound comes from the two cabin speakers (makes sense sorta).

When the amp is on, I hear sound in the cabin speakers as well as up in the cockpit from the radio, CD, etc.

Here is what I searched for and couldn't find here:

I added a connection to feed the aux inputs to the stereo so I can plug in an iPod. When the ipod is connected and turned turned on the aux DOES play the sound through the cabin speakers, but ONLY to the two cabin speakers and not to the cockpit even with the amp on.

I tried to use the fade setting in the radio but cannot get the sound back to the cockpit area. As a matter of fact, when I try to fade I hear the ipod on one set of speakers (cabin) and as I fade to the rear (cockpit) I hear whatever is playing on the radio, etc.

Anyone else experienced this? I'm confused.

Dale,

What stereo do you have in your boat? How are you feeding the 'aux' input?

The 02 280s came with the Clarion XMD1 stereo that does not have an Aux input, so I can't say for sure what your issue is, but it does sound like the Aux input does not get fed to your amp.

Henry I need to verify the specific radio. I remember reading SOMEWHERE on the boards that my model did have an aux input. When I pulled the panel I found what the person mentioned in the post. It's a red/white female jack. I'm assuming it is an input because I can hear whatever is playing coming out of the speakers.

I know getting the model is key which I'll do. I don't understand how an input would only feed two speakers but I'm sure it's not impossible.

Dale, how many RCA (Red & White) wires do you have on the back of your radio? Reason I'm asking is because, you might have a set for the front, another set for the rear, and the other set should be for a auxillary input. Also what year is your boat?

I believe most 2003 Sport Boats and Crusiers had an XMD2 which I do not think supports an AUX input. Someone else will have to confirm though.

I only recall seeing one pair but that was near the end of last season. I haven't looked at it recently but will be soon. My boat is an '03.

You probably have the XMD1 or the XMD2. When you find out what radio you do have, do a google of Clarion XMD1 or 2 Owner's manual / installation manual. This will tell you all you need to know about your radio.

As a matter of fact, I'm not doing $hit right now so I'll look it up and get right back to ya:thumbsup:

Ok, Here's what I found, The XMD1 has a front and rear set of RCA wires. The XMD2 has one set of RCA wires. Neither one of them has an auxillary input:smt009:smt013

The RCA wires are used to send a signal to the amplifier.

THen what in the world is happening because I can hear my ipod when it's connected to "whatever they are". Strange!

I did find a manual and there's no mention of inputs either. I'm going to the boat Wed to figure it out. This is the stuff that drives me nuts!

Here’s a tip, paint the platform mount you have for the grill on the swim platform white, and I’ll bet your radio will work!

Bill there has to be an inside joke in there somewhere!

Dale, If you have the XMD 1 and don't want to change it the way to get iPod connectivity is with an FM modulator. I used one that plugs into the radio antenna wire rather than broadcasting a wireless signal. I don't have the details handy, but I'll get them and get back to you. As I recall it was short money and a snap to install.

Oh you can be assured there is an inside joke... yet JEALOUS joke at that! He may have a bigger boat, but in the end he's just plain jealous.

Bill, if you add a grill platform the parabolic shape of the SILVER mount will increase the ability to transmit your MMSI data allowing you to fix your radio issues you guys have been working on! Painting it WHITE will only decrease it's conduction/reflective ability as an antenna and cause you yet more pain :)

Great picture Dale, but it would appear you are leaning to port a bit. Maybe it’s because you forgot to remove the fenders while coming out! That’s the problem with the Radio, turn the balance control back to the middle!

I had same problem, look in the clarion manual and there is a section about aux input, it tells you how to reprogram aux ... cant recall how but its no difficult.

Hackforalivin mentioned that too the other day. The manual seemed really weak from what I remember. Are you sure there is a setting that needs to be enabled?

I just bought the Jabra Cruiser which is a bluetooth/FM modulator. I may just have eliminated my need to screw with the aux :) This thing has about a 30' distance too.

FYI - this works great

I think I'm going to just forget the aux thing all together. The Jabra Cruiser works VERY well in the car. It's an FM transmitter which can be tuned to any channel, has bluetooth, and is rechargable via a USB cable. It functions well as a handsfree speaker phone by sending your calls through the stereo even in a Jeep with a soft top.

The range is excellent and is A2DP compliant (meaning stereo over bluetooth). I figure I can put it down below anywhere in the cockpit and pipe iPod/Pandora, etc through the boat speakers. It can multi-pair. This will also solve my "cabin only" speaker issue.

The other big attraction to me is the fact that I don't have to run a power cable to it or hardware it to any input. It's about the size of a radar detector. The clip is designed to go over a sun visor (the clip is also the FM antenna).

I suspect the reason you heard the ipod on the cabin speakers is that you were creating feedback in the pre-out section that the ipod was plugged into, and that feedback was making it to the internal amps that actually fed those speakers. You heard different music on the other speakers, because you really never changed the source.

Check out this http://www.wakeworld.com/MB/Discus/messages/65921/283815.html where they claim to have made cables to do aux-in on the Clarion heads.

:huh:I have a mute switch on the console, when i put in a new stereo I could only hear one set of speakers, the mute switch was on,just a thought you got a mute switch.I flipped it to off and everythings works fine.
