carry on generators

Wow, seriously guys. I have never seen a more hostile approach to a new guy on the forum than this. I'm surprised and disappointed, even if it was a "portable generator" post. I would have expected differently. New guy to the forum was the thing to note. We don't know if he was a pot-stirrer or not, but I didn't get that impression by reading the initial post and seeing the number of posts he had made so far.

Anyway...carry on. :smt009

His response of calling other's here "Stupid was/is the equivalent of the "turd in the punch bowl"

I was thinking more along the lines of taking an "upper decker" (doing your business in the tank instead of the bowl) at someone's house during a party, but I get your point nonetheless.

Wow...how many died? :wow:

By my count:
Alcohol poisoning: 3 Portable generators: 0

I decided that it was safer to anchor by the drunks than by the Honda flotilla so I may have missed few genny deaths and not noticed.

Ski, can you use "safer" and Fairlee at the same time??

In SJ's defense, I have to say he was rudely greeted, but it's always the retaliator that gets caught - happens in football all the time.

Yeah, there's a search function - but when I found SRO back in 2004 I wasn't well versed in message board protocol or etiquette. If we spent 1/10 of the time helping newbies out rather than reeming them out, the world would be a better place! Can't we all just get along??

I absolutely agree.

The man came here, to what he thought was a knowledgable group, looking for information. Instead he gets nothing but a rash of crap from a lot of people who know a lot of stuff and can help him boat safely for a long time.

I forget, what makes this site so much different from other sites? The genuine desire to share boating experience and knowledge? I must have missed that in this thread (except for a few).

If it's been discussed a thousand times and you don't have anything good to say, how about some guidance on how to search forums, or references to other information so the original question can be answered and knowledge conveyed and an informed decision made, or, don't reply. Then nobody is left with a bad taste in their mouth.

We have an installed generator and 3 CO monitors (2 installed, one portable), I can't really comment on portable generator use other than to parrot (the usefeul information) that i have read here (mostly outside of this thread).

SJ-Don't let this scare you off. There's a wealth of knowledge and experience here that can help you repair and maintain your boat, as well as making your boating experience more enjoyable and safe.

I do not believe early posters intended to alienate the OP. Rather they most likely hoped to stem this well worn and divisive subject. To the OP if you will give a little break these members have a vast store of knowledge they will share. These people are suspicious of a first post being about this topic as outsiders will join and post to stir the pot. So welcome, learn, and share.

Hey if you read the original post and look @ how many times SJ posted you have to assume he may be unaware of the risks with generators. Having several deaths in my area this season I only relayed links for educational purposes. Then many posts later he suddenly is an expert and we're Stupid d!cks??? If he was so smart why even ask the question?? Aren't there generator sites that geeks can discuss the pros & cons of various portable generator models if that's all the info you're interested in?? I believe that SJ is an AH and I could care less what he does. Run your genny all night in your cabin Capt. Know it all!!!

I have a 270 SE with everything but a generator. I was wondering if anyone has any experience with carry on generators. I'm considering one just for running my AC. I want something small and quiet but powerful enough to do the job. I have a friend who uses a Honda, but was wondering if there are any other brands that would be just as good.

OK, I quoted his original post. Please show me where he asked anything related to the safety of portable generators. He simply asked for opinions on brands.

IMHO, you and everyone else that jumped on him about the safety concerns, when he wasn't even asking about that are the A-holes. Especially considering how juvenile and rude most of the comments were.

The OP is not at fault here. All of you "know-it-alls" are...

BTW, even after ALL of the threads on this topic, I still have not heard one legitmate reason why portable generators, when used properly, are any more dangerous than an onboard generator in regard to CO poisoning.

Well SWW, If you are asking about portable genny's !!.
We take it as if he NEVER owned one before ??.
We're looking out for his best interest in owning one and how to use it SAFELY thats all !!!.

I have no problem with that. What I find disappointing is how rude and juvenile most here were toward him in presenting their opinions. Sure, this may be "beating a dead horse" for most long-time members here, but he is not a long-time member. How would you like to join a forum and ask a legitimate question and then get pounced on rudely by several people with opinions unrelated to the question you asked?

Think about it folks. We are not 3rd graders picking on the new kid at recess here. :smt009

You're actually defending someone that wanted to stick the genny on the beach and run a 100' extension cord through the water to run his AC?
