I've been to that part of Mexico more than a dozen times and have never had a problem or felt threatened.

Not really any time I felt unsafe other then when we left Coco Bongo and had to haggle for a taxi in which the rate had doubled to go back to our hotel. In waiting for a ride we had a nice dressed gentleman walk up to us and offer to sell us a very large brick of Cocaine right in the middle of a very busy shopping mall! Other then that no we felt safe and didn't have any other issues! Like I said I am already planning my return trip. I already need a vacation!
 
Just in from 8 day stretch in Playa Del Carmen. Had a wonderful time, a few very good excursions. 5th Ave. was very interesting as well.
Stayed at the Gran Porto Real, right on the beach. 35 C all week, back to -20 here today.
Facilities were excellent, staff couldn't be more helpful/attentive.
No worries, no issues, felt quite comfortable at all times. That said, we didn't stray too far off the beaten path.

Looking forward to going back.
