Hey guys as some of you know we are headed to Cancun in a few days. Thought I would pick your brains on things to see/ do while we are there or things to look out for. Thanks for any and all help really looking forward to leaving this snow and cold behind for awhile!

The Mayan ruins of Chichen Itza is a must see! Stay away from all the time share sales people.
Enjoy the warm weather while we freeze.

Go to the ruins at tulum. Also the La familia restaurant in Puerto Morelos is great. The cenotes are very nice to swim and snorkle.
+1 on the time share people.

Definitely avoid the timeshare people. Señor Frogs is fun to watch the drunk girls. But I would prefer to plunk my back side down in a cabana on the beach. There is a senote(I think that's how it's spelled) which is basically brackish area where a river runs into the ocean, down at Riviera Maya that is beautiful for snorkeling. If you scuba, then take the ferry to Cozumel.

Yeah, walk right by the timeshare people, don't talk to them. You should make sure you have a shuttle prearranged. Definitely check out the topless ladies at the beach but don't stare.

Being down there over a dozen times I would say Chichen Itza is a must see.
pay the extra bucks for a private or smaller van tour. More enjoyable than being herded around like cattle.
If it was June I would say get out fishing for the Swordfish and Marlin.
Isle Mujeres is an entertaining day trip.
If you scuba dive the smaller reefs around Cancun are not bad but a day trip to Cozumel would be worth every penny.
We have always stayed at the Royal Resorts near the South end and had them coordinate the day trips for us.
Wherever you are staying I'm sure they have a Concierge to help with trip planning.
+2 on "Stay away from the time share people" They try to give you free stuff or transportation somewhere and waste all your valuable vacation time.

As a side note now that "she said yes"
 - my Wife and I got married by the Mayor down there 15 years ago. Quite the enjoyable adventure getting all the legalities coordinated down there.

Have a great and safe trip !

Beware of the kiosks in the malls that look like they are selling excursions like scuba, trips to Tulum and Xcaret. They are fronts for time shares. I would recommend Xcaret. It is pricy though and a long day.
I would be sure to ask how far the excursions are. Some of them have you up early in the morning to sit on a bus for 3 hours.
On your first time, there is no shortage of things to do that don't require you to sit on a bus for more than 30-60 minutes. Hell, you can stay in the hotel zone and not ever go on a bus with no shortage of things to do. I would arrange snorkeling at the hotel. No need to take a ferry or a bus for that. The water everywhere is unbelievable. The Mexican people in the hospitality industry are unbelievably friendly.
Don't drink the tap water! Brush with bottled water. Don't bring any more cash than you need for the airports. Use the ATM as needed and credit cards.
If you go to Isla Mujeres, go to Pico's for lunch. Excellent fish served on a table set in the sand on the beach.
Shut off your wireless data on your IPhone and only use WIFI!!! You'll come home to a $300 bill for roaming data (don't ask me how I know that).

Agreed, Chickenpizza is a great place to tour! I disagree with the time share scam. If you learn how to use them you can get a lot of free stuff. Last time in Cabo we had a snorkel/cocktail cruise, wave runners, quad ride and $300 cash. We visited Chickenpizza on a free shuttle with free admission. Only an hour or so of my time and I kind of have fun watching these guys trying to seel those who can't be sold. I had a "$30K" timeshare down to $3,500 and a free 2-week stay in Thailand and said no.

+1. Or +10. Hire a personal guide to take you through the ruins. It isn't expensive and well worth it if you get a decent one.

Now if I could only remember how we found a decent one...

Just walking through the airport is an adventure, everyone just wants to take your bags! Ignore them all! I would assume you have ground transpartation included.

Thanks all. I have private ground transportation set up as well as a few excursions. We will Se chicken itza sail to the islands. We have a private table at coco bongo and several boating excursions. We are staying at Temptations Resort because it's adults only and we won't have to deal with kids. I really appreciate the info guys!

Ah,Jason, I believe temptations is a swingers resort.(or whatever goes) Guy at the dock went in Sept just for that reason. Just wanted to warn you in case you didn't know that. Have a great time ,,

Joe, um no... I didn't know that. Well this vacation just got a whole lot more interesting!

It most definitely is a swingers type of resort.

The Admiral and I went there for our honeymoon. We actually stayed at an all inclusive place about an hour south of Cancun. Lot more relaxing. All the places mentioned above are great places to see.

Word to the wise though: Be very very situational awareness! Understand Mexico isn't the safest place on the planet right now and you are actually in a differant country.

Have fun, but be safe.

Temptations? Absolutely a different environment. We stayed at an adult only place to keep away from noisy kids and had noisy drunks instead. I was very close to walking down and kicking someone's a$$ early the morning we were leaving. Ugly women topless all over the place and not one hot one to look at. My wife teased me the entire time. The Coco Bongo was interesting and we had a good time. Take an afternoon nap that day as it starts happening around midnight.
