Boating and Firearms

OK. Ya'll have convinced me. Today, I purchased my first hand gun (a Barretta 9mm). Hopefully, I never need to use it, but am prepared if I do.

Nick-

Congrats and Make sure you know how to use it safely. Taking a safety course at the local gun range will give you some confidence since it is your first handgun.

I try to take my guns to the range (or in the back of my property) at least every 6 months to get reaquainted with them.

We weekend on our boat at least 10-15 weekends a year and I feel it is necessary to carry for piece of mind. Our area is pretty safe but we have a large number of petty crimes and "dirtballs" just hanging around. The only problem I have with carrying is when alcohol comes into play. In Missouri it is a felony to have a loaded gun within your possession while consuming alcohol..... for good reason of course. In the morning before we leave the marina "if we might be drinking", I seperate the mag and pistol, I hide one and my wife hides the other or I leave it in the truck.

Wayne.....we too are sorry for your loss.

Neither Kim or I grew up in households with guns so our knowledge was pretty limited to knowing what a gun is & that's about it. Home invasions & armed robbery around here are no longer limited to just the seedy areas of town and happen on just about a daily basis. These people get addicted to drugs & don't care about themselves, you or me. They are not afraid of anyone or anything.

We both received our carry permits this year after taking the mandatory 4 hour crash course. She has a 9mm sig & I've got a 40 cal Glock. Although we have been regulars at the range this summer neither of us has or will carry until we get some additional safety training.

I'm curious if you have handgun training or extensive practice time to assist you if and when you should have to use it. If not do you have any plans for the future that will help with the safe and effective use of your gun?

I have plenty of experience. I served 24 years in the Navy, and spent more than a few days firing & cleaning, firing & cleaning, firing & cleaning, .....

I'm glad some have bought guns but sad that you did. Just to protect what you have. This country has gone down hill FAST with crime. :smt021. And i live out in cow country in Vernon NY. :smt013.

What happened was absolutely horrible.

I wish we could carry here in Canada but you cannot. Our government dosen't believe in our right to self defence as passonately as the good folk in the US do.

I have to keep my handgun in a quick access mini vault in my bedroom, and only use as a last resort...then go defend myself in court should I use it.

On the other hand I can have a shotgun on my boat....has to be unloaded of course...oh Canada.

You hit it square on the head on that. In the last six months I've had a drunk drive his car through my front yard stop in my drive way back up and almost drive through the side of my house. He stopped after I confronted him and told him to shut the F'in car off and don't get out or I will blow your head off. I had a S&W 500 in hand. He parked a brand new Cadillac in my bushes about 2 feet from house. The cops came and arrested him. It was 2 in the morning.
Next, around midnight my pit bull started going insane and I couldn't figure out why. Someone was in my boat. I finally saw this person stand up, jump out and run through the woods. We didn't catch him.
Then my motion light came on in the back yard late one night. My dog perked his head up and so did I. I walked over to our sliding glass door and there was someone standing in the middle of my back yard. As soon as he saw me he started running. I let the dog out (he's very fast) and I heard the guy yelling oh ****. The guy vaulted the fence and ran through the woods. I called the dog off and called the cops. I was unarmed and I didn't want to take a chance of him harming my dog if he was armed. I live on an acre in a nice area. The lot next door to me is a wooded acre. The next day I ran strands of barbed wire waste high all through the woods and nailed it to the trees. No one will run through the woods again to get away.
Now I watch tv with a fire arm, when I answer the door if I don't know you I have a fire arm in my hand.
My dad's Lincoln Town car was stolen right out of his driveway, used in a robbery then totaled.
My business has been broken into twice in the last year.
So needless to say we live prepared for intruders at all times. My lady carries concealed at all times. If you break into my house you will be shot and killed. If my dog gets to you first I promise he will rip your leg off and eat it in front of you. It's a travesty that things have come to this. We don't live in a big city either.
Meet Sarge. Everyone needs one of these.

I'm just reading this thread. I am so sorry for your loss, Wayne.

I have (before reading this) begun my application process for concealed carry in my state. I have 24 years of qualification with arms in the military. I even have an expert marksman ribbon. I own a handgun. I bought it when my first child was born. I have been shopping for a shotgun for quite some time now.

I am becoming a federal LEO as well. I'll be leaving the military next year, but probably be more involved with controlling violence than ever before.

What a great looking dog, my dog wanted to go out late one night as the door open she and the male both took off for the back yard when i hear"oh ****" and then crying
whoever they are they did not come back...dogs know how to deal with trouble...we live in a nice area and homes have been broken into in the middle of the day...you just don't know..my dogs are a good judge of people..if he growls run and do not stop.

So you going to go fly the planes looking for drug smugglers?

I do love Sarge!!!!:thumbsup::thumbsup:

However, one piece of advice (it's free, and that's probably what its worth). I believe that you are assuming a great liability by stringing barb wire in the woods with the intent to intentionally harm someone running through your woods. You have the right to defend yourself, but you could be criminally and in "civil court" be held liable for this.

I am not saying that's right or wrong, but just trying to give you a "heads up"

BTW - What part of Florida are you from?

Interesting question. What if you posted a sign (unlit of course) that read "DANGER Low lying barb wire fence".

Is it legal to put in a minefield? Along with appropriate signage?

Thunder, do you own the wooded lot that you put the barbed wire on?

My neighbor owns the lot. I asked his permission and he said it was a good idea. It's an acre wooded lot that's fenced in. I live in Ocala. I'm seeing your points on the liability issue.

Re: Boating and Firearms

There has been a great deal of action concerning hand gun permit carry here in Tennessee, including cc in State Parks. There is a great deal of information on the forum pages of both the Tennessee Gun Owners web page and the Tennessee Firearms Association. Although it is now possible to carry legally in state parks, and a goodly number of local parks, it would appear to be illegal to carry on a corps of engineers lake! Even stronger legal issues on TVA waters.

That said, personnel safety and defense comes first. If you don't defend yourself, it may be too late for someone else to.

That is true. I have dock neighboor who was stopped and asked if he had a firearm onboard. He did with the state carry permit. the TWRA promptly informed him that it was illegal to have a gun on a boat on our lake. they let him off with a warning.

Just curious if you guys pack ‘heat’ when raking leaves?

RandolphA man pleaded not guilty to armed assault with intent to murder after police said he shot his neighbor over a leaf-dumping dispute. Christopher Leonard was released on $20,000 bail following his arraignment in Quincy District Court. Police said the 38-year-old shot his neighbor John Rota in the stomach when they got into an argument over the disposal of leaves near their Randolph homes. Authorities said Rota was taken to Boston Medical Center and later released. Rota told police that Leonard always carried his gun, even when cutting the lawn or playing with the kids in the yard. Norfolk County District Attorney’s Office said Leonard is moving out of the Randolph home. It was unclear if Leonard had hired an attorney.

:wow:
The guy carries his gun even playing with the kids? Damn...a bit overzealous, Id say.
