Boating and Firearms

OK...
I keep a Mini-14 aboard. Not so much for day trips, but because of the overnight trips on the hook. This woman disappeared just this past weekend, her boat found adrift a few miles from shore.

You can't call 911 "out there" (well, even if you can, you're not going to get any help for a long time). I would never want to be unable to defend my property and my family if the need arose. For me, it's CARRY.

You guys with the dinghies should get one of these

3 round burst only or you'll sink your self.

Never have...never saw a need for it. I would be more concerned with one of my kids finding it and playing with it when I was off the boat.

Also, I usually travel a group.

Always carry. Don't care how big a group you have, you have the right to protect yourself and you just never know. If you can't knock them down, 'glock' them down.

Do you have more facts about this case other than whats in that article? If not, I really don't see what the correlation is with this thread.

We have concealed carry permits here in TN. It is also legal to carry it unconcealed, although few do. For the same reason as you do not wear it on your hip, I would not admit to carrying one on a boat or elsewhere on something so public as the internet.

If they know you have one, then the element of surprise is not in your favor.

IMO, this sort of personal protection information should not be shared publicly for your own safety.

I will say I am in full agreement to be able to protect you and yours, no matter what the means.

I say! Well played 007.

The pirates who troll CSR looking for victims will never suspect you're packing the Illudium PU-36 Space Demodulator now!

One word:
Deterrence

A shot gun on a boat has more uses than just protection. I've had to deal with Water Moccasins every year around the Chickahominy. The things get up to 6' long and are very aggressive around the dock... They also love the big exhaust ports on a 480 DB...

It's also good if you fish and catch the occasional shark or ray...

I carry weapons locked in a secure cabinet. Been to the Bahamas and Keys several times and have been shadowed by different boats. My feeling is I ain't givin up without a fight. I think most of these guys that are out to get you are pretty much chickensh!ts and a show of firearms would be too equal for them. They want the easy prey.
I would rather be able to defend my family than be slaughtered on the open ocean as has happened numerous times down here.
Let er rip.

Anyone who kills Water Moccasins is doing us all a favor.

funny thing, it is illegal to kill any snake here in TN. Not that Anybody has probably ever been prosecuted for said offense.

We carry primarily during the huckleberry season to assure the grizzly bears don't get too close!! I was boarded in the middle of the night at Sandpoint once by a drunk that came out of a bar. He SWORE he was on the right boat and kept asking where Bill was. I kept yelling, "Get off my boat!" I didn't carry a gun at that time and figured I'd get him with mustard from the cooler and finish him off with the ketchup!! If he kept coming, I'd throw a tackle box full of lures at him and that WOULD bring him down! Actually, I was worried that he would fall backwards and hit his head on the outdrive right behind him! It was an awakening experience so now we carry mace and the Ruger Alaskan for the bears!

Interesting reading on the .pdf they have about cotton mouths... I know first hand how aggressive they are. They would come right up on the beach with the kids playing in the sand and get all cranky. A few years ago, my brother-in-law chopped the head off of one that was about 6' long (and fat) and the darn thing was still trying to bite for about 5 minutes even though it had no body... nice white mouth.. big fangs..

I now have a shot gun... and I've killed a few others in the years since that event. They are really aggressive in May/June around here. I don't care if it's a "water snake" or "water moccasin"... I hate snakes. The riot gun chops them in half.

I'm with you on the snakes. If it slithers I shoot it. Years ago my pop and I were fishing the suwannee river and a water moc started swimming slowly towards us. My pop took a shot at it with a 38 and the thing got mad and came full bore at us. 3 shots later it was dead and very close. I HATE SNAKES.

Gary, you don't really fire off a 12ga for a shark or ray do you? In all seriousness, why not just cut the line if its that bad/big?

After someone broke into our home and beat the sh*t out of my wife and then raped her :smt013. I carry a gun 24/7 after that. So if you come on my boat or in my house without me knowing you !!... YOUR F'in A$$ IS DEAD .... End of story !!. My wife died after that ordeal. :smt089
